Texas and Arizona use different processes, and neither state guarantees an insurance discount. Check with the court listed on your citation before enrolling.
How to judge whether the course is worth it
Treat a defensive-driving course primarily as a possible way to resolve an eligible citation—not as a guaranteed way to lower your insurance bill. Compare the course and court charges with the likely cost and record consequences of handling the citation another way. Include any added fees, and count an insurance discount only if your own insurer confirms that one applies and explains its conditions.
There is no substantiated average crash reduction, premium saving, or financial return to use as a general estimate. The decision depends on the specific citation, the court’s process, and the driver’s circumstances.

When Arizona defensive driving may be worthwhile
Confirm the citation and eligibility first
Arizona’s program is for eligible civil moving violations. The Arizona Supreme Court lists limits that include one course attendance in a 12-month period, measured by violation date; one violation addressed per course; and no accident involving serious injury or death. The course must be complete at least seven days before the court date. The court program says Arizona DPS photo-enforcement “notice of violation” tickets cannot be dismissed through this school program. Verify eligibility through the official program and the court before paying a school.

Do not confuse Defensive Driving School with Traffic Survival School. The latter is a separate intervention for more serious violations or excessive points. Also distinguish a course used to seek dismissal from attendance ordered by a court as a sanction; court-ordered attendance in that context is not for dismissal.
Calculate the full cost and time
The Arizona Supreme Court’s cost page breaks the total into a court diversion fee, state fee, state surcharge, and school fee. The total varies by court and provider, and additional fees may apply, so use the amount for the jurisdiction handling your citation rather than assuming a statewide price. The court FAQ says classes last at least four hours and no more than four and a half hours; registration and breaks do not count toward class time.

Weigh the likely result, not a promised discount
Successful completion results in dismissal of an eligible citation and no points assessed under the program. Some insurers may discount voluntary attendance, but the Arizona Supreme Court does not say that every insurer offers a discount or specify an amount. Ask your insurer about your policy before treating a discount as part of the course’s value.

As a local example—not a statewide checklist—the San Antonio Municipal Court’s driver safety guidance asks for court costs, an approved course, and current liability insurance. Check your own court’s requirements, costs, deadline, and submission method before enrolling.
Understand the record and insurance provisions
After compliance with the statutory process, the court removes the judgment and dismisses eligible charges. Texas law says a charge dismissed under the subchapter may not be part of the driving record or used for any purpose. It also provides that an insurer may not cancel a policy or increase its premium because the insured completed a driving safety course or had a charge dismissed under the subchapter. That protection is not a guarantee of an insurance discount.
Quick Recap
What to check before enrolling
- Contact the court on the citation. Ask whether this specific violation and driver qualify, what the full court cost is, what documents are required, and how to request the course option.
- Confirm the deadline and submission rules. In Arizona, completion must be at least seven days before court. In Texas, follow the court’s instructions for the applicable statutory process, including the 90-day period where it applies.
- Verify the course is authorized for the program. Texas law calls for a TDLR-approved course; Arizona uses Supreme Court-certified schools.
- Get the all-in cost. Ask about court, state, surcharge, school, and any additional charges rather than comparing course tuition alone.
- Ask your insurer directly. Treat an Arizona discount as uncertain unless your insurer confirms eligibility and terms; Texas law bars specified cancellation or premium increases but does not promise savings.
