Yes, Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil is a legitimate choice for many gasoline, flex-fuel, and gasoline-hybrid vehicles. Current Costco listings identify its common 0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30 oils as full synthetic, with API SP and ILSAC GF-6A performance claims. The 0W-20 and 5W-30 products are also listed with GM dexos1 Gen 3 approval.
That does not make every Kirkland oil suitable for every engine. The correct viscosity and approval in your owner’s manual matter more than the label on the front of the bottle.

Who makes Kirkland Signature motor oil?
Costco owns the Kirkland Signature private label, but Costco does not manufacture the oil itself. Current Costco product information identifies Highline Warren as the responsible manufacturer. Older Kirkland labels and independent testing identified Warren Distribution, the company associated with Highline Warren before its reorganization and expansion under the current name.

Highline Warren makes private-label lubricants at facilities in the United States. Costco describes the current oil as “Made in the U.S.A. with domestic and foreign components.” That statement refers to where the finished product is made; it does not mean every base-oil or additive ingredient originates in the United States.
It is also important not to assume that every private-label oil produced by the same company has an identical formula. A manufacturer can make different formulations for different retailers, specifications, and price points.
What does Kirkland motor oil claim to meet?
Costco’s current U.S. listings for common passenger-car oils show the following specifications:
| Product type | Typical listed specifications | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 0W-20 full synthetic | API SP, ILSAC GF-6A; GM dexos1 Gen 3 for listed product | Confirm the marks and license number on your bottle |
| 5W-20 full synthetic | API SP, ILSAC GF-6A | Do not assume it carries every approval found on other viscosities |
| 5W-30 full synthetic | API SP, ILSAC GF-6A; GM dexos1 Gen 3 for listed product | Match both viscosity and required approval |
| 5W-30 High Mileage full synthetic | Marketed for vehicles with more than 75,000 miles | Check the exact bottle for current API and OEM approvals |
Costco says the standard oils are intended for gasoline, flex-fuel, and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. The listed performance claims include protection against low-speed pre-ignition, or LSPI, along with timing-chain wear, turbocharger and piston-deposit protection, and sludge and varnish control associated with the API SP category.
Is API SP still a good specification?
Yes. API SP is not an obsolete or invalid rating. The American Petroleum Institute introduced it in May 2020, and its current category information still lists API SP as a current gasoline-engine oil category.
API SP was designed to address issues including:
- Low-speed pre-ignition protection in turbocharged gasoline engines
- Timing-chain wear
- Turbocharger and piston deposits
- Sludge and varnish control
There is a separate issue involving the newer ILSAC GF-7 standard. API’s 2025 motor-oil guide identifies GF-7A and GF-7B as the current ILSAC certification marks, while Costco’s current product pages still identify common Kirkland oils as API SP/ILSAC GF-6A.

- Helps extend engine life, even in severe conditions
- Protects for 15,000 miles – guaranteed(1)
- Contains additives to help fight sludge
- Keeps your engine running like new
That does not mean a Kirkland GF-6A oil is unusable. It means you should accurately describe what you are buying and follow the specification required by your vehicle. Do not assume a current Costco listing is GF-7-certified unless the bottle itself carries that designation.

Is Kirkland oil actually tested or certified?
There are two useful forms of evidence, but they should not be confused with a blanket guarantee covering every Kirkland product.
Independent testing
The Petroleum Quality Institute of America tested a Kirkland Signature full-synthetic SAE 5W-30 sample purchased in January 2020. PQIA reported that the sample met SAE J300 viscosity requirements and produced results consistent with the API service categories printed on its label. The manufacturer was identified as Warren Distribution at the time.
That is encouraging evidence that the product was not simply low-quality oil in a convincing package. However, it applies to the sample and tests performed. It does not certify every later batch, viscosity, high-mileage formulation, or future recipe.
API licensing
API licensing is a separate matter. API’s Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System allows marketers to license the API marks and subjects licensed products to program requirements, monitoring, and enforcement. API’s directory currently lists Kirkland products under Costco, including 0W-20 and several 5W-30 dexos1 Gen 3 entries.

What about GM dexos approval?
GM says authentic licensed dexos products display the dexos trademark and license number on the package. The GM directory lists certain Kirkland 0W-20 and 5W-30 products as dexos1 Gen 3 licensed.
This matters if your Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, or GMC owner’s manual specifically requires dexos1 Gen 3. In that case:
- Confirm that the oil viscosity matches the manual.
- Check the bottle for the dexos trademark and license number.
- Verify the exact product and viscosity in GM’s current licensed-product directory.
Do not assume that every Kirkland viscosity, high-mileage product, or specialty oil has the same GM approval. Approval is product-specific.

Is Kirkland High Mileage oil better?
Kirkland’s 5W-30 High Mileage full-synthetic oil is marketed for vehicles with more than 75,000 miles. Costco says it contains seal-swelling additives intended to help rejuvenate aging seals and reduce oil leaks.
That can make it a reasonable option for an older engine that is beginning to consume oil or develop minor seepage. It is not a repair product, though. A deteriorated oil pan gasket, valve-cover gasket, rear main seal, or turbocharger seal still needs diagnosis and repair. Seal-conditioning additives cannot guarantee that an existing leak will stop.
High Mileage oil is not automatically better for every vehicle. A newer engine with low mileage does not gain a universal advantage from using it, and the high-mileage label does not override a required manufacturer-specific approval.

When should you avoid Kirkland oil?
Kirkland can be a poor choice when the bottle does not meet the complete requirement for your engine. Common examples include:
- European engines: Some BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and other vehicles require a specific ACEA category or OEM approval, not merely a viscosity such as 5W-30.
- Diesel engines: Heavy-duty and light-duty diesels may require API CK-4, FA-4, or a manufacturer-specific diesel specification. A gasoline API SP oil is not a substitute.
- Special turbocharged applications: The engine may require a particular OEM approval in addition to LSPI protection.
- Vehicles with a narrow viscosity requirement: 0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30 are not interchangeable simply because all three may be full synthetic.
- Older or unusual engines: Some vehicles require an older API category, a specific additive profile, or a specialty lubricant.
How to check whether a Kirkland bottle is right for your car
- Open the owner’s manual. Find the engine-oil section, not just the maintenance schedule.
- Record the exact viscosity. Examples include SAE 0W-20 or SAE 5W-30. Pay attention to temperature charts and severe-service instructions.
- Record the complete specification. This may be API SP, ILSAC GF-6A, GM dexos1 Gen 3, an ACEA category, or an automaker approval.
- Compare the back and front of the Kirkland bottle. Check the viscosity, API symbol, ILSAC mark, dexos trademark, license number, and any listed OEM approvals.
- Verify current online listings when an approval is critical. Use the API or manufacturer directory, especially for GM dexos products.
- Buy enough oil for the engine’s capacity. Costco commonly sells multipacks, but having extra oil is not a reason to use the wrong viscosity or specification.
For example, if a vehicle requires SAE 5W-30 meeting API SP and dexos1 Gen 3, a Kirkland 5W-30 bottle carrying those exact credentials may be suitable. If the manual instead requires an ACEA C3 oil with a particular European OEM approval, a Kirkland bottle showing only API SP and ILSAC GF-6A should not be treated as an equivalent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Kirkland oil the same as SuperTech or another store brand?
The same contract manufacturer may produce oils for multiple brands, but that does not prove the formulas are identical. Base oils, additive packages, viscosity targets, testing requirements, and approvals can differ between customer contracts.
Claims that Kirkland is “the same oil” as Walmart SuperTech, Amazon Basics, MAG 1, or another private-label brand should therefore be treated cautiously unless the brands publish matching product data and approvals. A shared manufacturer is not proof of a shared formulation.
Does Kirkland oil offer good value?
For a vehicle that accepts its listed specifications, Kirkland’s main advantage is value: it offers full-synthetic oil in larger multipacks at a price that is often competitive per quart. The value is supported by recognized API licensing and, for certain products, GM dexos1 Gen 3 licensing—not just by Costco’s reputation or the low price.

FAQ
Is Kirkland Signature motor oil good quality?
Yes, for vehicles whose manuals call for the viscosity and specifications printed on the bottle. Current common Kirkland passenger-car oils are listed as full synthetic with API SP and ILSAC GF-6A credentials, and some 0W-20 and 5W-30 products carry GM dexos1 Gen 3 approval.
Who manufactures Kirkland motor oil?
Highline Warren manufactures the current Kirkland motor oil identified by Costco. Older product information and independent testing identified Warren Distribution, the organization associated with Highline Warren before its current corporate structure.
Is Kirkland oil the same as Walmart SuperTech?
There is no reliable basis for assuming they are the same formula. Even if the same manufacturer makes both products, each retailer can specify a different formulation, additive package, or set of approvals.

Only if its viscosity and required specifications match the vehicle. It is marketed for vehicles with more than 75,000 miles and includes seal-conditioning claims, but it is not a universal substitute for a required European, diesel, hybrid, or manufacturer-specific oil.
The Bottom Line
Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil is a sound, legitimate value for the right vehicle. Highline Warren makes it for Costco, current common products carry recognized API SP and ILSAC GF-6A claims, and certain 0W-20 and 5W-30 oils are licensed for GM dexos1 Gen 3.
The buying rule is simple: match the exact SAE viscosity and complete approval required by your owner’s manual, then verify the marks on the current bottle. Kirkland is not automatically right for every gasoline engine, and API SP/GF-6A should not be confused with every newer or specialty specification.
