There is evidence that tariffs raised the cost of shipping U.S.-built BMWs to China in 2018, but the sources available do not confirm that BMW moved production from South Carolina to China. BMW’s current plant information shows Spartanburg still assembling several X models and exporting about half its vehicles overseas.
What happened to BMW’s U.S.-built exports to China?
In an August 3, 2018 report, BMWBLOG’s Nico DeMattia said BMW exported about 80,000 SUVs a year from its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant to China at that time. The report said Chinese tariffs on American-made cars, imposed in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on China, increased BMW’s costs. That figure describes the situation reported in 2018; it is not a current export-volume estimate. BMWBLOG’s 2018 account cited CNN for its underlying discussion.
The article discussed production cutbacks and job losses as possible consequences if tariff pressure escalated and retaliation followed. It did not say those cuts or layoffs had already happened, and it did not establish that BMW had transferred production to China.
What BMW’s current plant information establishes
BMW’s official Plant Spartanburg page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists the BMW X3, X5, X6, X7 and XM, including variants, as vehicles assembled at the site. BMW says about 50% of Spartanburg’s vehicles are exported to nearly 120 countries. The page also reports about $9 billion in BMW Group U.S. export value for 2025, attributing that figure to the U.S. Department of Commerce. BMW says the plant has assembled more than 7.3 million vehicles since 1994.

Those figures show that Spartanburg remains a major manufacturing and export operation. They do not identify what share of its output goes to China today, provide a model-by-model export breakdown, or show how production assignments changed over time.
Has BMW shifted some production to China?
The available sources do not verify a move of production from Spartanburg to China in response to tariffs. They name no transferred models, dates, or production volumes. BMW’s current list of Spartanburg models documents what the U.S. plant assembles, but without historical allocation data it cannot confirm or rule out a change in the division of production between locations.

It is also important to distinguish where a vehicle is built from where it is sold. Tariffs can make cross-border shipments more expensive and create pressure to reconsider sourcing or production. But a report of higher shipping costs—and a warning that cuts might follow—is not proof that a factory transfer occurred. The available material does not provide a comparable account of BMW’s China production, quantify any resulting U.S. job impact, or establish the present tariff rates affecting these vehicles.

The phrase “shifts some production to China” appears in a headline surfaced by a translation or indexing result, but that result is not independent evidence of the claim. The underlying 2018 account supports a narrower description: tariffs increased costs for BMW’s reported U.S.-to-China shipments, and production reductions were raised as a possibility. BMW’s current plant page confirms Spartanburg’s ongoing production and exports, not a completed move to China.
