It opened May 29, 2025, at a Pilot Travel Center near Douglas Avenue and I-35, with the initial fueling plan aimed primarily at equipped PepsiCo trucks rather than general public use.
Where is the Urbandale B99 pump?
The pump is at the Pilot Travel Center near Douglas Avenue and Interstate 35 in Urbandale, Iowa. The Iowa Soybean Association reported that the location is about five minutes from PepsiCo’s Urbandale plant. The installation opened May 29, 2025.
That location and its intended fleet use matter: reports described the station as serving PepsiCo trucks equipped for the fuel, not as an ordinary diesel pump confirmed to be open to every driver. The available reporting does not establish whether the pump is operating today or whether unaffiliated drivers can access it.
What does B99 mean?
B99 is a blend of 99% biodiesel and 1% petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is a fuel made from renewable resources; the small petroleum-diesel share distinguishes B99 from B100, which is 100% biodiesel.

The blend label alone does not establish that a particular vehicle can use the fuel. Compatibility depends on the engine and its equipment. The Iowa Soybean Association reported that the PepsiCo semis using the site had Optimus Technologies’ Vector System, which it described as enabling heavy-duty diesel engines to operate on B100. That is a description of the equipped trucks, not a claim that all diesel vehicles can run B99 or B100.
Why was Urbandale called the first of its kind?
The distinction is the above-ground pump design. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reported that a B99 station had already opened in Decatur, Illinois, making Urbandale the second B99 station in the country but the first with an above-ground pump. Calling it simply the first B99 pump or station in the United States would leave out that earlier site.

Benecor supplied an insulated, heated storage and dispensing system that supports blending biodiesel and petroleum diesel on site. The Iowa Soybean Association said this approach avoids adding underground infrastructure. The reporting does not provide a like-for-like technical comparison with the Decatur station, so the established distinction is the above-ground design—not a claim that Urbandale was first in every aspect of B99 fueling.
How do the fuel system and trucks work together?
The site’s setup links fuel handling at the station with specialized equipment on the trucks. Benecor’s system stores and dispenses the fuel and allows on-site blending; the PepsiCo semis were fitted with Optimus Technologies’ Vector System. These details come from the Iowa Soybean Association’s account of the project.

- On the trucks: the reported PepsiCo semis had equipment intended to let heavy-duty diesel engines use B100.
- For other vehicles: the project does not establish compatibility. Drivers should follow their vehicle manufacturer’s fuel requirements rather than infer suitability from the pump’s B99 label.
In May 2025, the Iowa Capital Dispatch also reported that Pilot planned another pump in Texas that summer. That was a plan stated at the time; the cited coverage does not verify whether it was completed.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship describes its Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Program as a cost-share grant program for retail fuel sites and biodiesel terminals. Under the program description, eligible biodiesel dispenser projects can receive up to $50,000 per project, and awardees commit to five years.

The agency’s March 2025 award list records a $100,000 biodiesel award to Pilot Travel Centers LLC at 11957 Douglas Ave., Urbandale. The list does not establish the award’s precise relationship to the above-ground B99 equipment, so it should be read as a public award record for the Pilot address—not proof that the grant paid for this specific installation.
Why the opening mattered to Iowa’s biodiesel industry
The Iowa Soybean Association reported estimated biodiesel production of 350 million gallons in Iowa in 2024 and said the state had 10 operating biodiesel plants at that time. It also cited a Decision Innovation Solutions study estimating the industry’s 2024 contribution to Iowa at $123 million in labor income, $520 million in value added, and $2.2 billion in output, or total sales.
Those are statewide industry estimates, not measured results from the Urbandale pump. Farmer and Iowa Biodiesel Board and Iowa Soybean Association board member Dave Walton attributed up to 13% of the value of an Iowa-grown soybean bushel to biodiesel. His figure is an attributed estimate, not a universal measurement for every bushel or producer.
What drivers should know before seeking B99
The reports establish the opening date, location, fleet-oriented purpose and equipment described for the project. They do not establish current fuel availability, public access rules, site-level emissions measurements, or comparative prices. If you are considering a fuel other than the one specified for your vehicle, check the manufacturer’s guidance and confirm access and fuel availability directly with the station.
