That is not the same as driving the car remotely: consumer apps do not generally provide steering, braking, or road-driving control. Which commands work depends on the vehicle’s equipment, connected-service setup, cellular coverage, and the manufacturer’s terms.
What does “internet-controlled car” mean?
“Internet-controlled car” is not a standardized name for one feature. It can describe two very different things: sending a connected vehicle a discrete command, or operating the vehicle’s driving functions from outside it.
Remote commands through a manufacturer app
Connected-car apps may offer commands or information such as door lock and unlock, remote start, climate control, lights or horn, vehicle status, location, and—in some electric vehicles—charging functions. These actions are limited to the features the manufacturer has enabled for a particular vehicle. The ITU distinguishes this type of remote operation, which can include instructions for locks, climate, windows, or lights, from remote driving. ITU-T X.1383
Remote driving or teleoperation
Remote driving means an off-board person or system monitors, assists with, or takes over some part of the dynamic driving task. It is a substantially different and more safety-critical capability than starting a parked car or locking its doors. Do not assume an ordinary owner app can steer, brake, or drive your vehicle over the internet. Guidance for remote-operation systems used where the operator is outside the vehicle is covered separately in BSI Flex 1886 v2.0:2024-09.

Can you control your car from your phone?
Possibly, but only if your particular vehicle supports the command and its connected service is set up. A make or model name alone is not enough to establish compatibility: model year, installed equipment, modem activation, service-plan terms, and network availability can all matter. Manufacturer examples below are from US service pages and should not be taken as promises of availability in other markets.
| Manufacturer example | Documented app functions and conditions |
|---|---|
| Volkswagen | The myVW app can support remote start, door lock and unlock, and honk/flash on equipped vehicles. Volkswagen says Remote Access is included for most connected vehicles from model year 2020 onward, while duration, capability, model year, and feature availability vary. Volkswagen Remote Access |
| Ford | Eligible vehicles may support remote start, locks, status, location, preconditioning, and EV charging features. Ford requires an activated modem and cellular connection; remote start and locks are not standard on every vehicle. A key fob is still required to put the vehicle in Drive unless Phone As A Key is equipped. Ford app documentation |
| Chevrolet | Remote commands in the myChevrolet app depend on vehicle equipment and an active service plan. Chevrolet says both the vehicle and app need a stable internet connection for commands to succeed. Chevrolet remote commands |
These examples illustrate why there is no universal list of app features or single service-plan rule. Check your vehicle’s current owner manual, the manufacturer’s compatibility information, and the terms for your market and account.

How an app command reaches a car—and why it can fail
A remote command depends on more than the phone. The app must be able to communicate through the manufacturer’s connected service, and the vehicle must be reachable over its supported connection. Chevrolet explicitly requires stable internet access for both the app and vehicle; Ford’s documentation also specifies an activated modem and cellular connection.
- Vehicle capability: The car must have the required equipment and the feature must be supported for its model and year.
- Service activation: The relevant connected service or plan may need to be active; requirements vary by manufacturer and vehicle.
- Network availability: A weak or missing connection can prevent a command from reaching the vehicle or completing.
- Command-specific conditions: A function can have additional requirements, such as a key being present before the vehicle can be shifted into Drive.
If an app reports that a command failed or the vehicle cannot be reached, do not assume the requested action occurred. Check the app’s returned vehicle status, then use the normal in-vehicle controls or key as appropriate. For command-specific prerequisites, consult the owner manual and the manufacturer’s support instructions.

Does internet control mean someone can hack and drive your car?
Connected interfaces can create cybersecurity risks, but the presence of a phone app does not by itself establish that an attacker can steer or brake a vehicle. Vehicle security depends on how the complete system is designed: the app and service, wireless interfaces, in-vehicle networks, and electronic control units all matter. Automotive guidance emphasizes limiting pathways from externally connected systems to safety-critical controls.
NHTSA’s 2022 best practices recommend network segmentation and isolation to limit connections between wireless-connected electronic control units and low-level vehicle controls, especially systems for braking, steering, propulsion, and power management. For remote-access solutions to road vehicles, ISO/TR 23786:2019 identifies risk-assessment criteria; its stated scope excludes internal communications within the vehicle or extended vehicle. ISO/TR 23786:2019 ITU-T X.1383 also discusses verifying the source and integrity of vehicle-control data. These are system-design concerns, not features an owner can confirm from an app screen alone.
Connected accessories are part of the picture
Vehicle access can involve more than an automaker’s app. ITU-T X.1374 addresses external interfaces and devices with vehicle access capability, including remote keyless entry, diagnostic tools, wireless OBD-II dongles, and telematics control units. ITU-T X.1374 This does not make every such device unsafe; it is a reason to consider compatibility and security when choosing or connecting equipment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should an owner check before relying on remote features?
- Confirm the exact vehicle and equipment. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker and owner manual for the specific model year, trim, and installed options.
- Check activation and service terms. Verify whether the modem and connected service are active, which functions are included, how long access lasts, and whether a plan is required in your region.
- Read the command’s safety conditions. Confirm what must be true before using remote start, unlocking, climate, or other functions, and whether a key is needed to move the vehicle afterward.
- Know the fallback. Keep the ordinary key and in-car controls available. Treat the app as unavailable when the phone, vehicle, cellular network, or service cannot connect.
- Review account and data settings. Check the manufacturer’s current account-security, sharing, location, and privacy controls, especially if another person has access to the vehicle or app account.
Can you add internet control to any car?
No general add-on recommendation is supported for this broad use case. The documented consumer functions are integrated with eligible vehicles, connected services, and manufacturer systems. A generic OBD-II dongle or diagnostic tool is not established as a safe way to add internet remote control to a road car, and a remote-control toy is a different kind of product entirely. For an existing vehicle, start with the automaker’s compatibility and service documentation rather than assuming an aftermarket device can safely reproduce factory features.
For remote operation systems beyond ordinary convenience commands, BSI’s guidance addresses systems where the operator is outside the vehicle, while BSI PAS 11281:2026, published 7 April 2026, gives recommendations for managing cyber, cyber-physical, and physical security risks that could compromise safety in connected automotive ecosystems.
