Invader lists a tare weight of 1,350 kg, a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 1,800 kg and a payload of 450 kg. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not independent measurements, and they are not enough on their own to establish whether a particular car can tow a loaded Viator.
What is the Invader Viator?
Invader describes the Viator as a luxury off-road camper that expands at camp: its electrically operated roof raises the canvas enclosure, which has mosquito netting and all-weather PVC window covers. The roof uses a remote control and two synchronised actuators. Invader’s product page says, “Set up camp at the touch of a button with the remote control”; that is promotional wording, not the result of an independent setup test.
New Atlas described the 5.5 m Viator as a prototype and a roomier, more fully equipped model in the Invader lineup. That is launch-era reporting, not confirmation of the trailer’s present production status. Invader’s product page also says final details and measurements would be released in August 2026, but the material available here does not establish whether a later final production specification superseded that caveat. Confirm the current specification and production status with Invader or an authorized seller.
What are the Invader Viator specifications?
The dimensions and capacities below are those Invader lists on its Viator product page. They have not been independently measured.

Invader specifies a galvanised ladder-type chassis, a 2.5-ton Burquip braked axle, a 2.7-ton Knott coupler, parabolic two-blade springs and a 63 mm heavy-duty jockey wheel. Front and rear stabilising/lifting legs are listed, along with 16-inch alloy wheels and 265/70 R16 all-terrain tyres, including a spare.
The body is described by Invader as seamless hand-laminated fibreglass with pigment throughout the laminate. This is the manufacturer’s construction description; it is not independent evidence of durability or off-road performance.
Living space and kitchen
The listed interior includes a queen bed with a layered foam mattress, seating areas, a fold-out bench, a slide-out table, vinyl flooring, fibreglass cabinetry and wood-finished counters and doors. A fridge slider is specified for a fridge up to 540 H × 880 L × 500 W mm. Check the fridge’s external dimensions, including any handles or fittings, against that limit; also verify its voltage, wiring and current draw against the trailer’s electrical setup. The page does not establish that a particular fridge model fits.
Water, bathroom and power
The water system comprises a 150 L chassis-mounted tank, flow-meter level indicator and Shurflo 12 V pump. Invader lists a Hansen hot-and-cold water system using gas and electricity. Bathroom equipment includes an interior vanity basin, indoor hot-and-cold shower, cassette toilet and exterior hot-and-cold shower; the shower cubicle is optional.
The electrical specification names a Victron 30 A battery charger, low-voltage battery protector, smart battery controller and alarm, 30 A DC-DC charger and 30 A solar controller, alongside one 108 Ah LiFePO4 battery. It also lists a 220 V distribution board with earth-leakage protection, two 220 V Euro sockets, an exterior multiplug, a 10 m charging cable, three 12 V accessory sockets and three USB sockets. Listed lighting includes interior strip lights, a nose-compartment light, white/orange exterior lights at the front, rear and sides, kitchen lights and reading lights.

Storage, supplied equipment and options
Invader lists front and side storage compartments, an isolated gas-cylinder compartment and a rear multipurpose bin. The specified supplied equipment includes one 3 kg gas cylinder and bracket and a travel blanket.
Listed optional extras are a 4.5 m Eezi Awn awning, quick-fit slide-in patio, patio side walls, trailer cover, purpose-designed storage bags, exterior shower cubicle, air conditioner and inverter solutions. Confirm which items are included in the specific sale rather than assuming that listed equipment is standard.
How much does the Invader Viator weigh?
Invader lists a tare of 1,350 kg and a GVM of 1,800 kg, giving a stated payload of 450 kg. Tare is not the same as the trailer’s weight when ready to travel: carried water, options, gas, luggage and other cargo add weight. A full 150 L water tank alone contains 150 kg of water, before accounting for the tank and its fittings. Check the actual loaded trailer weight and keep it within the trailer’s applicable limits; ask the seller how the published tare is defined and whether it reflects the equipment on the trailer being offered.

What car can tow an Invader Viator?
The Viator specifications do not name a tow-vehicle model or provide a complete loaded towing calculation. Do not decide that a car is suitable from the Viator’s tare alone, or assume that a vehicle rated to tow 1,350 kg can tow it safely when loaded. The trailer’s published GVM is 1,800 kg, but suitability depends on the vehicle, actual loaded trailer, hitch and applicable local rules.
Before buying or towing, verify the following against authoritative vehicle documentation, the trailer’s final specification and local requirements:
- The tow vehicle’s permitted braked towing mass and gross combination limits.
- The Viator’s actual loaded mass, including water, options and cargo, and its axle limits.
- Permitted towball load and whether the vehicle, towbar and coupling can handle it.
- Any local legal requirements that apply to the vehicle-trailer combination.
Ask the seller for the trailer’s current plated limits and confirm the loaded figures rather than relying on estimates. A vehicle’s stated towing capacity alone does not prove the full combination is within every limit.

How does it compare with the Invader Quattro X?
For a within-brand reference, Invader’s Quattro X specification PDF lists a 930 kg tare, 1,650 kg GVM, 720 kg payload and 4,800 mm travel length; it also gives a 5,800 mm camp length and four-sleeper iconography. These are Quattro X figures, not Viator specifications. The stated payload comparison alone does not show how much usable capacity either trailer has once water, options and carried equipment are included.
When comparing expandable campers, assess travel dimensions and height as well as weights; then compare sleeping layout, water capacity, bathroom arrangement, battery and charging equipment, roof setup and storage for bulky equipment. Use actual expected cargo and water loads when evaluating payload, not just the maximum printed figure.
Price and availability
Invader Cape Town advertises the Viator “from R585 000” on its dealer page. That is a dealer-advertised starting price, not a binding quote or confirmation of the current final price. Ask the seller to confirm price, included equipment, options, delivery timing and availability for the market where you plan to buy. Invader’s home page lists dealerships in Cape Town, Natal, Pretoria, Kempton Park and Namibia; contact the relevant dealer to check current stock and geographic availability.
