Intoxalock says it restored the backend systems needed for installations, calibrations, and service-center support after a cybersecurity event that began on March 14, 2026. The company reported that service resumed around March 22–23, but the restoration did not answer the most important unresolved questions: what type of attack occurred, whether attackers accessed or copied personal information, and what protections will prevent a repeat.
The outage was especially serious for drivers whose ignition interlock calibration deadlines fell during the disruption. Intoxalock said the devices in customers’ vehicles remained operational, but calibration and certain service functions depended on systems that had been paused. That left some drivers unable to start their vehicles or facing lockout-related delays.
What Intoxalock restored
Intoxalock’s public status updates said the company identified a cybersecurity event on March 14–15 and temporarily paused portions of its systems as a precaution while it secured the network and protected the integrity of its systems and data.
By late Sunday, March 22, or shortly afterward, the company said core customer-service operations had resumed. The restoration covered:

- Ignition interlock installations
- Scheduled device calibrations
- Service-center transactions and support
- Other backend functions needed to service customers
That does not necessarily mean every customer experienced a complete device failure during the incident. Intoxalock told Cybernews that the devices already installed in vehicles remained operational and that customers should continue following normal prompts. The problem was that customers needing a calibration, a service visit, or assistance with a lockout could depend on systems that were temporarily unavailable.
Intoxalock has generally described the incident as a “cybersecurity event” or system pause. The company has not publicly identified whether it was ransomware, another type of intrusion, a destructive attack, or a compromise involving a third-party provider.

Why an outage could leave a driver unable to start a car
An ignition interlock device is a vehicle-installed breath-alcohol measurement system. The typical setup includes a mouthpiece, a handheld measuring unit, and a connection to the vehicle’s ignition. The driver must provide an acceptable breath sample before starting the vehicle, and the device may request additional random tests while the vehicle is running.
Calibration is a separate but essential part of the system. Intoxalock says calibration intervals vary by state and generally range from 30 to 90 days. Calibration is performed at an approved service center rather than simply through the driver’s handheld unit.
If a scheduled calibration cannot be completed, the device can enter a service lockout. Depending on the state and the circumstances, the driver may need to visit a service center promptly and may need a tow. This creates a distinctive failure mode: an attacker would not necessarily need to disable every breathalyzer in the field. Disrupting centralized scheduling, authorization, calibration, or service systems could strand the smaller group of drivers whose maintenance or lockout event occurred during the disruption.
That explanation is an inference from Intoxalock’s published calibration process and the company’s description of the affected systems. It is not a public forensic finding about the attacker’s exact method.

Which customers were most affected?
The outage did not affect all Intoxalock customers in the same way. Drivers who were not due for calibration and did not need service could generally continue using their devices. The highest-risk groups were:
- Drivers whose scheduled calibration fell during the system pause
- Drivers who received a service lockout while service systems were unavailable
- Drivers whose vehicles were already at an installation, repair, or calibration location
- Drivers subject to strict state or court deadlines with little room for a missed appointment
Connecticut Public reported Intoxalock’s estimate that approximately 7%–10% of its roughly 6,000 Connecticut customers would have needed calibration during the relevant period. Local and regional reports also described drivers who could not start their vehicles, had cars left at repair or service locations, or faced disruption in multiple states.
Cybernews reported that Intoxalock served more than 150,000 customers annually across 46 states and was associated with approximately 5,500 installation stations at the time of the incident. Those figures were company-reported and should not be treated as independently audited customer totals. The later T.E.C.H. announcement referred to more than 6,000 U.S. locations; the difference may reflect changed coverage or different definitions of a location or service center.
What affected Intoxalock customers should do
- Follow the device’s prompts. Continue using the interlock as directed. Do not ignore a calibration, service, or lockout message simply because general service has been restored.
- Contact Intoxalock through a current official channel. The company established a dedicated text-support process during the outage and directed affected customers to service-center support. Use the current contact information shown on Intoxalock’s official website or status page rather than relying on an old number or an unverified social-media post.
- Confirm the deadline with the authority that supervises your case. A company-issued extension may help with the service appointment, but it does not automatically change a court order, driver-licensing requirement, probation term, or state monitoring deadline. Contact the relevant state agency, court, probation office, or monitoring authority for the rule that applies to your case.
- Keep evidence of the disruption. Save device messages, appointment confirmations, emails, text messages, call records, service invoices, towing receipts, repair-location records, and communications with state officials. Write down when the vehicle became unavailable and when service was restored.
- Ask about charges in writing. Intoxalock said it would cover costs directly resulting from the temporary system pause, while standard calibration fees could still apply. Request an itemized explanation of any calibration, service, towing, rental, or other charge and keep the response with your records.
- Do not bypass, disconnect, rewire, or tamper with the device. Intoxalock says tampering may be detected and reported to the relevant monitoring authority. It can also be treated as noncompliance under applicable state rules.
If the incident caused a missed deadline, a lockout, or a financial loss, preserving records is particularly important. This is practical reporting guidance, not individualized legal advice; the legal consequences depend on the state, court order, and facts of the driver’s case.
How the 10-day extension worked
Intoxalock said it created a 10-day calibration extension process for affected customers in eligible states. Customers who received an extension were instructed to complete calibration before the new deadline.
The extension was not necessarily nationwide or legally identical in every state. Tennessee customers received a specific warning to return to a service center by March 24 or risk an extension problem or a restart of the interlock program. That illustrates why drivers should not assume that a company notice has the same legal effect everywhere.

If a driver missed an extension, needed service during the outage, or was charged despite an outage-related problem, the appropriate next step is to contact both Intoxalock and the state or local authority overseeing the interlock requirement. Ask each party to confirm the deadline and the documentation needed to show that the missed service was connected to the system pause.
Was this a confirmed data breach?
The public record available through August 11, 2026, does not establish that customer information was accessed, copied, or exfiltrated. It also does not establish that no data was accessed.
TechCrunch reported that Intoxalock would not say whether the incident involved ransomware, whether a data breach occurred, whether hackers demanded payment, or whether the company received communications from attackers. The company’s statement that it was protecting its systems and data describes its response; it does not by itself answer whether personal information left the network.
A lawsuit reported in late March alleged that cybercriminals disabled critical infrastructure and stole large quantities of information. Those are allegations in litigation, not confirmed findings. No public information reviewed for this report establishes the categories or number of records involved, if any.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Those are separate questions:
- Operational question: Were systems needed for installation, calibration, and service unavailable? Yes, according to the company and state notices.
- Security question: Did an unauthorized party access or steal personal information? Not publicly established in the available record.
Why regulators and courts are paying attention
Ignition interlock programs are administered through state laws, courts, licensing agencies, and monitoring authorities, but much of the day-to-day device service may be handled by a private provider. The outage therefore exposed a dependency between centralized vendor systems and government-administered driving-compliance programs.

Oklahoma published a formal statewide outage notice. Connecticut reporting described coordination between Intoxalock and state authorities over calibration extensions and customer handling. The precise legal effect of a missed calibration remains state-specific.
Separately, reported class-action litigation raises questions about alleged service failures, customer costs, contractual obligations, and data-security practices. The available reporting describes allegations and early procedural developments, not a judgment on the merits. Intoxalock has not been established as legally liable by the existence of the lawsuit, and the lawsuit does not by itself prove that a data breach occurred.

What the later T.E.C.H. app announcement does—and does not—show
On June 24, Intoxalock announced a nationwide rollout of its T.E.C.H. service-center app across more than 6,000 U.S. locations. The company said the app gives service centers access to troubleshooting information, wiring diagrams, scheduling tools, chat, and compliance functions. It also claimed the app could reduce service times by up to 25%.
The 25% figure is a company-reported performance claim and was not independently tested in the available reporting. The announcement also does not establish that the app was created specifically because of the March cyber event. It may have been independently planned, and the public record does not connect the rollout directly to the incident.
The app could improve service-center workflow, but it should not be treated as proof that the underlying security questions have been resolved. A meaningful accountability update would still need to explain, as appropriate, what happened, whether customer data was involved, how affected customers would be notified, and what changes were made to reduce the risk of another service interruption.
What remains unanswered
Intoxalock restored service, but several material questions remain open:

No. Intoxalock says tampering can be detected and reported to the relevant monitoring authority, and it may be treated as noncompliance under state rules. Contact Intoxalock and the authority supervising your interlock requirement instead.
Does Intoxalock’s 10-day extension automatically change my legal deadline?
Not necessarily. The extension was offered in eligible states, and state or court requirements may differ. Confirm the applicable deadline with the state agency, court, probation office, or other authority overseeing your case.
Will Intoxalock reimburse outage-related costs?
The company said it would cover costs directly resulting from the temporary system pause, while standard calibration fees could still apply. Keep receipts and request an itemized explanation of any charge.
The Bottom Line
Intoxalock restored the systems needed for installations and calibrations after the March 14 cyber event, but the recovery announcement does not resolve whether personal information was exposed or explain exactly how the attack happened. Drivers should follow device prompts, verify deadlines with their state or supervising authority, preserve all outage-related records, and never attempt to bypass or tamper with the interlock.
