Verdict: The Car and Driver Intellidash Pro DU1000 is a standalone 7-inch display that adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without replacing your factory stereo. It mounts with suction hardware, runs from a 12V socket, and uses your phone for maps and GPS. Installation is far less invasive than a head-unit swap, but “wireless” applies to the phone connection—not to power or every part of the audio path.
What the Intellidash Pro DU1000 actually is
The DU1000 is an external 7-inch IPS touchscreen. It sits on your dashboard or windshield rather than being installed in the dashboard, so your original radio remains in place. Car and Driver Tech lists wireless CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, voice control through the phone’s assistant, USB connections, a 12V power input and an FM transmitter. Navigation runs through the phone’s GPS and maps app.

That makes it a retrofit display, not a replacement stereo and not an adapter for an existing factory CarPlay system. The manufacturer’s description calls it “A 7-inch IPS display that turns any 12V socket into a full CarPlay / Android Auto cockpit.” That is product copy, not an independent performance measurement.

Installation: simple hardware, visible cables
The DU1000 is designed for an owner installation without cutting the dashboard or removing the factory radio. A typical setup is:
- Choose a safe mounting position. Use the supplied articulating suction mount on the windshield or dashboard. Keep the display out of the driver’s view of the road, airbags and essential factory controls.
- Secure the mount. The 2021 AppleInsider review described an articulating suction mount and an adhesive glass disc for dashboard mounting. A 9to5Mac reviewer reported relocating the adhesive mount without apparent dashboard damage in that installation; results can vary by surface, temperature and adhesive condition.
- Run power to the 12V socket. The unit needs continuous power from the car’s DC outlet. Review hardware included a USB-C cable, power adapters, cable tie and clips.
- Connect the phone. Andrew O’Hara’s October 10, 2021 AppleInsider review paired an iPhone first with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, then used the connection wirelessly over Wi-Fi. Follow the current manual for your phone and cable.
- Choose an audio route. Use AUX when the car has an input and you want a direct wired path, or use the display’s FM transmitter to send sound to the factory radio. Route and secure every cable so it cannot interfere with steering, pedals or an airbag.
This is easier than a stereo replacement, but it is not cable-free. The display needs power, and audio still has to reach the car’s speakers.
Daily-use trade-offs
Wireless phone connection
Once paired, the phone can connect without a data cable, preserving the factory radio and avoiding a dashboard teardown. Wireless operation still depends on the phone, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth pairing behavior and a powered display.
Audio over AUX
AUX provides a direct cable connection from the display to the car’s stereo. O’Hara preferred AUX in his 2021 review, while noting that it added another visible cable. Your vehicle must have a working auxiliary input.
Audio over FM transmission
FM avoids an AUX cable by transmitting the display’s audio to an unused radio frequency. O’Hara reported that this became less convenient on longer drives as local stations changed, and he noticed a slight audio delay. Those are dated reviewer observations, not a guarantee that every vehicle will behave identically.
Rank #2

- Bluetooth Connection: The Intellidash Pro connects to your smart device in just seconds. With minimal wires to hold you back, you can put your smartphone’s best features on the Intellidash Pro to enhance your rides.
- 7 Inch IPS High-Res Touch Screen: The touch display ensures clear visibility and interaction, even in bright sunlight. Interact with the monitor’s crystal-clear HD screen with a simple tap!
- Your Smartphone’s Best Features: Merge the two together by connecting your phone to the smart monitor and turn your vehicle into a fledged-out infotainment hub.
- Upgrade for Older Vehicles: If you are an owner of an older vehicle that doesn’t have a built-in smart display solution monitor, you can essentially turn that vehicle into a modern version!
Screen and controls
The 7-inch IPS panel gives CarPlay or Android Auto a dedicated surface instead of relying on a phone mounted low on the console. Mounting height, windshield angle, glare and suction stability will determine whether that advantage is useful in your car. The display does not add factory-radio integration; it is a separate screen that you must position and power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat it works with—and what it does not replace
- CarPlay and Android Auto: The DU1000 is intended to provide both wirelessly, with the phone supplying apps, GPS and maps.
- Factory stereo: Your original head unit stays installed. Sound must reach it through AUX or FM transmission, depending on your equipment and setup.
- 12V power: A usable DC socket is required unless you arrange another compatible power installation.
- Phone assistant: Voice control is provided through the phone’s assistant, so phone permissions, connectivity and account settings still matter.
Check the current manual and product page for phone, cable and vehicle-specific details before purchase; the available evidence does not establish a universal compatibility list for every car or handset.
DU1000 versus a wireless CarPlay adapter
A product such as CPLAY2air solves a different problem. Its manufacturer says it is for vehicles that already have factory CarPlay and converts that existing connection to wireless operation. It does not add a screen or create CarPlay in a car that lacks factory CarPlay.
| Question | DU1000 external display | Wireless adapter such as CPLAY2air |
|---|---|---|
| Does the car already need factory CarPlay? | No, it is intended to add a separate CarPlay/Android Auto display | Yes; confirm the vehicle appears on the current compatibility list |
| Does it add a screen? | Yes, a mounted 7-inch display | No; it uses the car’s existing CarPlay screen |
| Installation approach | Mounting, 12V power and audio routing | Plug-in adapter connection to the factory system |
| Best fit | Cars without factory CarPlay or Android Auto | Cars that already have wired factory CarPlay |
CPLAY2air’s manufacturer lists a $79.95 price and one-year warranty, but those details and its vehicle-year claims are volatile. Verify the current compatibility list and terms. Do not buy an adapter merely because its price is lower; it cannot substitute for an external display in a car without factory CarPlay.
Who should buy the Intellidash Pro?
It makes sense when
- You want CarPlay or Android Auto without replacing the factory stereo.
- Your car has a usable 12V socket and a practical AUX or FM audio path.
- You can accept a visible screen, power lead and audio cable (if using AUX).
- You value a reversible installation over integrated, factory-looking hardware.
Look elsewhere when
- Your car already has factory CarPlay; a compatible wireless adapter may be the simpler solution.
- You need completely hidden wiring or factory-style integration.
- You have no workable 12V power source or no acceptable way to get audio into the speakers.
- You are considering a different Intellidash model; compare that model’s own specifications instead of assuming DU1000 features.
Buying checklist
- Verify the exact model is DU1000, not DU2000, DU3210 or another variant.
- Check current stock and the current U.S. price; the listed snapshot is $399.99 and sold out.
- Confirm your phone supports the intended CarPlay or Android Auto connection.
- Locate the 12V socket and plan a cable route that cannot obstruct controls or airbags.
- Choose AUX or FM before installation and consider whether FM congestion will be acceptable on your regular routes.
- Read the current manual and warranty terms, especially if buying from a third-party listing.
The Bottom Line
The DU1000 is a practical way to add a dedicated CarPlay/Android Auto screen without dismantling the dashboard. Its real compromise is logistical: power, mounting and audio cables remain, and FM audio can be less consistent than AUX. Buy it only after confirming the exact DU1000 model, a safe mounting and cable plan, and current availability.
