The Prius inverter/converter is a power-electronics assembly within the power control unit (PCU). It converts high-voltage battery power into the electricity the motor-generators use, supports energy flowing back toward the battery during regenerative braking, and helps supply the car’s 12-volt system. Calling it the Prius’ “power broker” is a useful metaphor: it handles important electrical conversions, but it does not make the vehicle’s entire drive strategy on its own.
What does the Prius inverter/converter do?
The high-voltage battery stores direct current (DC), while the Prius motor-generators use controlled three-phase alternating current (AC). The inverter performs that conversion so the motor-generators can propel the car or, in the appropriate operating conditions, generate electricity.
During regenerative braking, the motor-generators produce electrical power. The power electronics handle conversion in the opposite direction so that energy can be routed toward the battery. Some designs also use a boost converter to raise the DC bus voltage available to the motor electronics. A separate DC/DC converter steps high-voltage power down to supply the 12-volt auxiliary system. How does it fit into the Prius power control unit?
“Inverter/converter” is often used as a practical name for a larger assembly, not just one isolated device. In Toyota’s description, the PCU brings together traction-power conversion, voltage boosting where fitted, low-voltage DC/DC conversion and motor-generator control electronics. The precise configuration depends on the Prius model and generation.
The PCU is one part of a wider hybrid system. It responds to control signals and manages electrical power, while the vehicle’s broader hybrid controls determine how the engine, motor-generators and battery work together. So “power broker” describes the PCU’s role in handling power flows; it should not be taken to mean the inverter alone decides when or how the Prius drives.

Why Prius voltage figures differ
There is no single voltage figure that applies to every Prius, and figures describing different parts of the electrical system are not directly interchangeable. A nominal battery voltage, a boosted DC-bus voltage and a maximum motor AC voltage describe different things.

Those examples show why a voltage comparison needs the model, market and measurement context alongside the number. Component layout and packaging can also vary, so a figure from one generation should not be used to identify or assess another Prius.

Is the Prius inverter/converter the same as an aftermarket power inverter?
No. In this article, “inverter” means part of the factory hybrid power electronics that serve the motor-generators. An aftermarket power inverter is a separate accessory intended to convert a vehicle’s electrical supply into AC for external devices. The shared name does not make the accessory a replacement for, or equivalent to, the Prius traction inverter/converter.
Why high-voltage safety matters
Prius high-voltage components can remain hazardous after the vehicle is shut down. Toyota’s 2004 Prius emergency response guide warns that high voltage remains in the system for five minutes after the HV battery is shut off. For the model covered by that guide, Toyota states: “Never touch, cut, or open any orange high voltage power cable or high voltage component.” The warning is model-specific; it is not a repair procedure for other generations.

Toyota’s 2026.07 Japanese Prius HEV manual warns of high-voltage components of up to approximately 600 V for the referenced market and model. Procedures and specifications may differ by vehicle, so do not use a guide for one Prius as instructions for another. Treat orange high-voltage cables and components as hazardous and leave inspection or repair to appropriately trained professionals.

The inverter/converter is not a generic bolt-on accessory. The evidence here does not establish a universal part number or compatibility across Prius models. A replacement assembly must be matched to the exact vehicle.

- Confirm the Prius model year, generation and market.
- Verify the vehicle’s configuration and the exact assembly required against reliable vehicle-specific parts or service information.
- Do not rely on a listing that says only “fits Prius” without confirming fitment for the particular vehicle.
