Jeff Bezos is backing an electric-vehicle company, but it is not an Amazon car project. The startup is Slate Auto, a privately held company developing a small, deliberately simple electric pickup that can be converted into an SUV with bolt-on body panels and accessories.
Slate has attracted major funding and more than 180,000 reservation holders, yet it has not delivered a production vehicle. Its current plan calls for first customer deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What is Slate Auto?
Slate Auto is an EV startup headquartered in Troy, Michigan. The company began in 2022 as a project called Re:Car inside Re:Build Manufacturing before becoming an independent business. Slate says its vehicles are designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan, and will be assembled in Warsaw, Indiana.

Rather than launching a heavily equipped luxury vehicle with a large touchscreen, Slate is developing a basic rear-wheel-drive truck that owners can personalize over time. The same vehicle can be configured as an open-bed pickup or converted into a five-seat SUV.

- Theme: Sport
- Toy vehicle form: Car
- Included components: Batteries
- Material: Metal
That simplicity is central to Slate’s pitch. The base truck is intended to be affordable, easy to understand and adaptable, with physical controls instead of a center touchscreen and an accessories marketplace for later upgrades.
Is Jeff Bezos the owner of Slate Auto?
No. Bezos is an investor, not Slate’s owner or CEO, and Slate is not an Amazon subsidiary.
Reporting by TechCrunch connected Bezos’s family office to Slate through corporate and government filings. The amount invested by Bezos or his family office has not been disclosed. Melinda Lewison, who manages Bezos’s family office, was listed as a Slate director.

Other reported investors include Mark Walter, the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and CEO of Guggenheim Partners, and Thomas Tull. The accurate description is therefore “Slate Auto, an EV startup backed by Jeff Bezos’s family office,” rather than “Bezos’s Amazon EV.”
Slate’s funding and leadership
Slate raised at least $111 million in its 2023 Series A. On April 13, 2026, it announced a $650 million Series C led by TWG Global. TechCrunch reported that the round brought the company’s publicly reported funding to approximately $1.4 billion.
The company also changed its leadership ahead of the planned launch. Peter Faricy became CEO in March 2026 after previously serving as an Amazon Marketplace vice president. Christine “Chris” Barman, Slate’s first CEO, moved into the role of President of Vehicles.
Faricy’s Amazon background may help explain why some coverage loosely describes Slate as Amazon-backed. However, his former employment and Bezos’s investment do not make Slate an Amazon business.
The Slate Truck: what is it?
The first product is a two-door electric pickup with a single rear motor and rear-wheel drive. Owners will be able to add a conversion kit that changes the truck into either a Squareback or Fastback five-seat SUV configuration.

These are manufacturer-provided, preproduction figures. The 205-mile range is not an official EPA estimate, and Slate says specifications may change before production. Buyers should not treat the current range, charging time or performance figures as final certification data.
How much will the Slate Truck cost?
The currently advertised price for the Blank Slate Truck is $24,950. That figure is before taxes, title, registration, documentation fees, destination and optional equipment. Slate lists a $1,450 destination charge.
The Squareback and Fastback SUV configurations are listed from $29,950. Those prices make the vehicle notably less expensive than most new electric pickups, but the headline figure does not represent the final drive-away price. Equipment, conversion parts and delivery-related charges will determine what a customer actually pays.
Early Slate material referred to a vehicle costing below $20,000 after potential federal incentives. That is not the current advertised base price. The present figure is $24,950 before fees and any incentives for which a buyer might qualify.
Why the vehicle is unusual
A truck that becomes an SUV
Most electric vehicles are sold as a fixed body style. Slate instead plans to let owners change the vehicle’s purpose. It can begin as a compact pickup and later gain rear seats and enclosed bodywork through a conversion kit.
This modular strategy could appeal to buyers who need an inexpensive utility vehicle now but want more passenger space later. It also gives Slate a way to sell accessories after the initial vehicle purchase.
A deliberately basic cabin
Slate is avoiding the increasingly common large central display. The company emphasizes tactile controls and a simpler interior. That may reduce cost and distraction, but it also means the truck will not provide the same technology-heavy experience found in many competing EVs.

Where will Slate vehicles be built?
Production is planned for a converted former R.R. Donnelley & Sons/LSC Communications printing facility in Warsaw, Indiana. Slate says it plans to invest nearly $400 million in the site and create more than 2,000 jobs.
The company has also projected up to $39 billion in economic impact for Indiana over 20 years. That number is a company forecast, not money already generated or independently verified economic output. As with the vehicle specifications, the factory’s eventual production scale will depend on funding, supplier readiness, regulatory approval and successful manufacturing ramp-up.
How do reservations and preorders work?
Slate originally used a $50 reservation program, but that program is closed. The company now accepts preorders intended to secure a delivery window.

- Pay a $300 deposit, or $250 if you have an active reservation.

The preorder deposit is nonrefundable. Slate sells directly to consumers and says it will not use traditional dealerships.
Slate reported more than 180,000 reservation holders on June 24, 2026. That figure should be treated carefully: reservation holders are not the same as customers with paid vehicle orders, and a reservation does not guarantee a specific delivery date.
When will Slate deliveries begin?
Slate currently expects first customer deliveries in late 2026, with its latest announcement specifying the fourth quarter. The company is still preproduction, so that timetable remains a target rather than a completed milestone.
For a startup building its first vehicle, the difficult part is not only designing the product. Slate must validate the battery and software, qualify suppliers, complete regulatory and safety work, establish quality control and scale the Warsaw factory. Delays are common during this stage, and the announced delivery window can move.

What could make or break the company?
Slate’s strongest advantage is focus. A relatively small, rear-wheel-drive vehicle with one battery size and a simple interior could be less expensive and easier to manufacture than a feature-heavy electric truck. The modular body concept also gives the company more than one way to market the same underlying vehicle.

The risks are substantial. A $24,950 starting price leaves limited room for manufacturing mistakes, warranty costs or supplier-price increases. The company must also prove that customers will accept a 205-mile projected range, a two-door base layout and a cabin without a central touchscreen.
Most importantly, Slate has to turn a well-funded product plan into repeatable high-volume production. Bezos’s backing and the $650 million Series C provide financial support, but neither guarantees that the truck will arrive on time or meet its current specifications.

Slate Auto is a genuine Bezos-backed EV startup, but calling it an Amazon vehicle is inaccurate. Its first product is a simple, modular electric pickup with a current advertised base price of $24,950 and a manufacturer-projected 205-mile range. The concept is distinctive and the company has raised substantial capital, but the key test is still ahead: delivering a compliant, reliable vehicle from its Indiana factory at the promised price and schedule.
