An Aston Martin is neither built entirely by robots nor entirely by hand. At Gaydon and St Athan, automated cells apply adhesive, control body geometry, frame structures and paint standard colors, while skilled technicians sew interiors, build seats, apply special finishes, correct imperfections and approve the finished car.
The result is a flexible, low-volume manufacturing system: industrial where repeatability matters, handcrafted where judgment and personalization matter. The two main factories do different jobs, and Newport Pagnell now preserves the marque’s specialist and restoration heritage rather than producing the core current range.

A two-site answer: Gaydon and St Athan
There is no single Aston Martin factory where every current model is built. The company’s principal UK manufacturing footprint is divided between specialized sites, each with a different role.
| Site | Primary role | What makes it distinctive |
|---|---|---|
| Gaydon, Warwickshire | GTs, sports cars, special vehicles and ultra-low-volume models | Aston Martin’s global headquarters and an integrated design, engineering and manufacturing site with flexible production and specialist manual capabilities |
| St Athan, South Wales | DBX SUV family, including the DBX707 | A purpose-built SUV plant created from three former super-hangars, with highly automated standard paint and production processes refined from experience at Gaydon |
| Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire | Restoration, heritage, servicing, repairs, upgrades and specialist Aston Martin Works activities | The historic factory site, but not the main production line for Aston Martin’s current core models |
Aston Martin’s current public range includes the DBX707, Vanquish, DB12, Vantage and Valhalla. Exact production allocation can change by derivative and production period, so the safest description is that Gaydon makes the company’s GTs, sports cars and special vehicles, while St Athan is primarily responsible for the DBX family.

The two main factories are designed for relatively low-volume, high-variation manufacturing rather than mass production. Aston Martin’s 2024 offering memorandum described physical capacity of approximately 7,000 vehicles per year at both Gaydon and St Athan, while also noting that each facility was optimized to operate below that level at the time of the filing. Capacity is not the same thing as actual annual output.
What “hand-built” means at Aston Martin
An Aston Martin is not built entirely by hand, and it is not built entirely by robots. Automated systems apply adhesive, control geometry, frame core vehicles, paint standard colors, measure bodies and repeat critical operations. Skilled technicians handle trim, seats, special finishes, corrections, inspection and many hand-assisted assembly tasks.
The distinction matters. Automation provides repeatability; human specialists provide variation, judgment and finish. That combination lets Aston Martin produce cars with substantial personalization and low-volume model variation without returning to a purely traditional coachbuilding process.
1. The aluminum structure starts with a bonded monocoque
The build begins with an aluminum body structure rather than a conventional steel body shell. Aston Martin uses anodized aluminum components made through casting, extrusion, and hot- and cold-sheet-forming processes. These parts are joined with heat-cured epoxy adhesive and mechanical fasteners to create a rigid, lightweight bonded monocoque.
Calling it a monocoque does not mean the car arrives as one piece. It is a precisely assembled structure made from many formed and engineered components. The quality of the joints, the accuracy of the geometry and the consistency of the adhesive application all affect the finished body.
Robotic cells apply adhesive to the relevant components. At St Athan, automated guided vehicles move adhesed parts toward the main build line. The structure passes through geometry stations and sub-assembly stages before entering an oven, where the adhesive cures. Once cured, the body is measured before exterior panels are attached or bonded.
This is one of the clearest examples of Aston Martin’s manufacturing philosophy. The process is highly engineered and repeatable, but the architecture is flexible enough to support different vehicle dimensions and derivatives. Aston Martin says its modular approach limits the additional tooling and engineering investment needed to create variations from common structures.

After the main structure has been formed and checked, the body moves through assembly stations. Technicians fit sound-deadening materials, prepare sub-assemblies and clean and prime adhesive paths. Parts are positioned with mechanical assistance, but people remain closely involved in handling and fitting the components.
A robot cell applies adhesive to selected body areas. Technicians then fit panels and sub-assemblies at framing stations. For core vehicles, framing is fully automated, giving the body a repeatable dimensional reference before closures such as doors, hoods and other panels are installed.
The body subsequently receives inspection and hand finishing. Any imperfection at this stage can affect panel fit, paint quality or the perception of the finished car, so the combination of automated geometry control and human checking is more important than the label hand-built by itself.

3. Paint is automated for consistency, manual for personalization
Most bodies follow an automated paint route at St Athan. The process includes sealing, cleaning, priming, spraying and curing in gas-fired ovens. Robots perform most of the spraying for standard colors, although localized areas may still be painted by hand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAutomation makes sense where the requirement is consistent coverage and repeatable film thickness. It does not eliminate human involvement: specialists inspect the cured finish, polish the body and use paint-rectification booths for correction and touch-up.
Gaydon retains a more flexible manual paint capability for special colors, clear coats and graphics. This is where the low-volume character of the business becomes visible. A one-off finish or complex graphic may not justify a dedicated automated program, but it can be handled by an experienced paint technician.
Aston Martin also says the whole vehicle, including painted bolt-on components, is painted together to maintain color harmony. That is a small but important detail. A door, hood or exterior panel that appears to match under one light can look subtly different if it was painted in a different batch or under different conditions.
4. The trim shop is where craftsmanship becomes most visible
The trim shop provides the strongest visual evidence for Aston Martin’s craftsmanship claim. Leather and other luxury materials, including Alcantara, are cut and prepared for interior panels by trained sewing and trimming technicians.

The work can include perforation, quilting, broguing, embroidery and embossing. These processes create the patterns and tactile details that distinguish a highly specified interior from a basic assembly-line cabin. Some Aston Martin interiors contain more than one million stitches, but that is not a universal figure for every car. The amount depends on the model, specification and interior design.
Instrument panels are assembled on an eight-station carousel conveyor and electrically tested. Front seats are hand-built on ergonomic fixtures, then tested for functionality before being sent to the main assembly line. The use of fixtures and electrical checks does not make the work impersonal; it gives technicians a stable, repeatable way to complete detailed manual operations.
In this part of the factory, the value of human skill is not simply that a person is holding a tool. It is the ability to recognize whether a stitch line, seam, quilting pattern, leather edge or panel surface meets the intended standard and to correct it when it does not.
5. Final assembly is a mixed-model operation
Once the painted body, interior components and mechanical systems are ready, the car enters final assembly. At both main plants, the final-assembly system is divided into three sections with indexing conveyors and multiple workstations.
Parts arrive from a central warehouse in vehicle-specific kits. Kitting reduces the number of choices technicians have to make at each station and helps prevent the wrong trim, component or finish from being fitted to a particular vehicle. Manipulators assist with loading major parts such as engines, instrument panels, seats, doors, fuel tanks, hoods, batteries and wheels.

The line is mixed-build rather than dedicated to one model. Employees can work on multiple models as vehicles move through the facility. That arrangement suits Aston Martin’s small-volume, high-variation business: the same manufacturing system can handle different products without requiring a separate high-speed line for every model.
It also explains why the factory should not be imagined as a slow-moving row of identical cars. The bodies may be built in a controlled sequence, but equipment, parts, trim and technician tasks must accommodate meaningful differences between vehicles.
6. Testing comes before the wings
End-of-line inspection is not a ceremonial glance at the paint. Laser equipment sets wheel geometry and aligns the headlights. The vehicle then undergoes a mechanical rolling-road test that checks the ABS braking system and powertrain operation.

These tests target problems that may be invisible in a photograph but immediately obvious to an owner: water entering the cabin, a trim panel making noise over a rough surface, or a mechanical system failing to operate as intended.
After testing, the car receives finishing work, paint mark-up and repair where necessary, and a final multi-point inspection. The inspector’s name is stamped in the engine bay. Only after this process are the Aston Martin wings affixed.
That order provides a fitting conclusion to the build. The badge is not simply attached at the beginning as a promise of quality; it becomes the visible sign of a vehicle that has passed the factory’s final inspection sequence. The available manufacturing descriptions support claims of mechanical testing, waterproof testing and rigorous final inspection. They do not establish that every car receives a particular public-road mileage or a specific road-test routine.
How much of the factory is really manual?
The honest answer varies by model, specification and production period. Manual work is especially visible in body finishing, trim, seat construction, special-color paint, graphics, inspection and rectification. Automated systems are especially important for adhesive application, framing, standard paint, curing and dimensional control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That division is not a contradiction. A luxury manufacturer benefits from automation wherever accuracy and repeatability matter, then uses trained technicians where variation, tactile judgment and customization matter. Aston Martin’s flexible architecture and mixed-model lines make that balance commercially practical at relatively low volumes.
It is also why the phrase entirely hand-built should be avoided. A modern Aston Martin contains automated and manually completed operations, just as the phrase mass-produced would miss the amount of skilled labor and individual finishing involved.
What factory documentaries show—and what they do not
The widely circulated WELT documentary titled ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE – Inside the Factory is useful visual context. Its listing identifies it as a 2020 publication, and it focuses specifically on the V8 Vantage. It presents that model’s build as involving around 200 hours of manual work.

That figure should not be turned into a universal Aston Martin production time. It belongs to a particular model and filming period, and it may describe manual work rather than the complete elapsed time from raw material to finished vehicle. It also should not be used as evidence that the current 2026 production system for every Aston Martin follows exactly the same sequence.
Archive footage can similarly show Newport Pagnell or an older Gaydon process even when the narration is presented as a general factory tour. For current claims about site allocation, production methods and environmental performance, Aston Martin’s official manufacturing disclosures and annual reports are stronger evidence than an undated or model-specific film.
Where Newport Pagnell fits into the story
Newport Pagnell was Aston Martin’s historic factory before Gaydon became operational in 2003. It remains important, but its role has changed.
Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell focuses on servicing, restoration, assured provenance, sales, body repairs, accident repairs, track-day work and upgrades. It is therefore part of Aston Martin’s continuing craftsmanship and heritage story, but it should not be described as the main current production line for the DB12, Vantage, DBX707 or the rest of the core range.
This distinction is particularly important when reading captions or watching historical footage. Newport Pagnell represents the marque’s coachbuilt past and specialist after-sales expertise. Gaydon and St Athan represent the current mainline manufacturing system.

The environmental picture is improving, but not perfect
Aston Martin’s 2025 annual report identifies Gaydon and St Athan as its manufacturing sites and provides a more balanced view of their environmental performance.
In 2025, the company reported a 12% reduction in total market-based Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from its 2022 baseline. The change was driven particularly by a 98% reduction in market-based Scope 2 emissions and a 9% reduction in Scope 1 emissions. Renewable electricity and operational electrification are part of the broader direction of travel, alongside biodiversity, water and waste initiatives.
Progress was not uniform. Manufacturing-site water consumption was reported at 8.69 cubic metres per car in 2025, 1% higher than the 2022 baseline and behind the company’s path toward a 30% reduction by 2030. Aston Martin attributed part of the unfavorable per-car result to lower production volumes that were not matched by equivalent water-efficiency gains.
The company reported that 99.8% of waste was confirmed as non-landfill in 2025. However, 4.36 tonnes remained uncategorized at the time of reporting, so the company could not claim that 100% of UK operational waste had been diverted from landfill. Manufacturing-site waste per car was 0.42 tonnes, 20% above the 2022 baseline and also behind the targeted reduction path.

Those figures do not erase the progress on emissions, but they do show why absolute claims such as zero waste to landfill would be misleading. A modern luxury factory can be technologically advanced and still have measurable resource and waste challenges.

The bottom line
Aston Martin’s factories are best understood as handcrafted luxury built on a flexible industrial system. Gaydon combines headquarters, engineering, GT and sports-car production with specialist and low-volume work. St Athan concentrates on the DBX family and standard-color production, using automation and lessons from the older site to improve consistency. Newport Pagnell preserves the marque’s heritage through restoration and specialist services rather than current core-model production.

Inside the plants, robots apply adhesive and paint, automated systems control geometry, and mechanical equipment handles heavy components. Human technicians sew interiors, build seats, apply special finishes, correct paint, fit parts, inspect details and approve the final car. After rolling-road, waterproof, squeak-and-rattle and multi-point checks, the wings are affixed.
That is the real answer to what happens inside an Aston Martin factory: not a choice between craft and technology, but a carefully managed combination of both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all Aston Martins built at Gaydon?
