Tiger Woods called his yacht Privacy—a name he said was his idea. In 2005, the Los Angeles Times reported that he had bought the 155-foot vessel for $20 million. The name took on added significance amid a reported dispute over the builder’s publicity about the yacht.
What was Tiger Woods’s yacht called?
Woods told CBS that the boat was named Privacy and that he chose the name. In that interview, he also declined to let the program visit the yacht. CBS’s interview captures both the name and his reluctance to show the vessel.
How much did the yacht cost, and how large was it?
In January 2005, the Los Angeles Times reported that Woods had bought a 155-foot yacht for a reported $20 million. The newspaper attributed the purchase figure to Powerboat and Motor magazine. These are historical reported figures, not a current valuation or appraisal. The Los Angeles Times report is the source for the reported size and price.
Why did he call it Privacy?
The yacht’s name fits the purpose described in a 2004 account of a lawsuit involving Woods and the builder. According to The Smoking Gun, Woods alleged that the builder publicized the purchase and images of the vessel despite confidentiality terms. The account reproduces a sworn declaration by Elin Nordegren describing the boat as “intended to be a private respite for our family to relax and escape the rigors of my husband’s celebrity.”
