Inside Polaris’ R&D and Vehicle-Testing Network

Polaris describes a distributed R&D and vehicle-testing network, with Minnesota facilities, Texas ORV testing land and external assessments. Here’s what its public materials establish.

Polaris does not describe one all-purpose “advanced lab.” Its public materials point to a distributed network: manufacturing and R&D facilities in Minnesota, dedicated off-road vehicle testing land in Texas, the Polaris Proving Grounds, and assessments at an outside automotive test center. The documents explain some locations and examples, but they do not provide a current, complete inventory of lab equipment or testing protocols.

Polaris’ testing work spans multiple locations

Polaris’ 2025 annual report identifies Roseau, Minnesota, as a wholegoods manufacturing and R&D facility, and Wyoming, Minnesota, as a research and development facility. The report also says the company uses land near manufacturing and engineering facilities, owns Texas land dedicated to off-road vehicle (ORV) testing, and uses public land in multiple regions where conditions are suited to vehicle development and testing.

These descriptions indicate a distributed approach, not that every location has the same equipment or performs every kind of test. The annual report gives no detailed site-by-site breakdown of test activities.

What happens at the Polaris Proving Grounds?

Polaris’ 2022 Investor Day presentation names the Polaris Proving Grounds as a product-testing resource and places Wyoming among the company’s global engineering and development resources. That is a presentation-era description; it does not establish the proving ground’s current configuration or describe its equipment and protocols.

One documented example: Pro XD testing

Polaris Commercial’s Pro XD FAQ says the vehicles underwent numerous hours of testing that simulated practical applications. It also names assessments at the Nevada Automotive Test Center and Polaris R&D Facility.

The FAQ does not publish measurements, pass/fail criteria, or comparative results. It therefore supports a general account of practical-use simulation and additional assessment, but not a detailed explanation of how the vehicles were evaluated or how they performed against competitors.

What the historical Wyoming lab tour shows—and does not show

A 2018 Analyst Day presentation includes a tour of Polaris’ Wyoming R&D facility, with images labeled as vehicle test rigs, workshop areas, a control room, and a motorcycle acoustic chamber. These images document environments shown at the time; they do not verify that the rooms, devices, or layout remain unchanged today.

Scale figures need their dates

Polaris’ 2022 Investor Day presentation reported approximately 1,800 engineers and software developers, eight global R&D and technology centers, $337 million in R&D spending during 2021, and more than 1,100 active patents. These are figures presented in 2022, not current 2026 staffing, spending, center, or patent counts.

Separately, Polaris’ 2025 annual report says the company had approximately eight million square feet of global manufacturing and R&D space. That figure covers global space in aggregate; it is not the size of one laboratory.

What the public information leaves open

  • Current equipment inventory: The available company descriptions do not provide a complete, current list of test rigs, instruments, or facilities.
  • Detailed protocols and results: The Pro XD FAQ does not state test measurements, acceptance thresholds, or outcomes.
  • Current Wyoming layout: The 2018 tour is historical evidence, not confirmation of the facility’s present-day arrangement.

On its April 29, 2025 earnings call, Polaris CEO Michael Speetzen said the company maintains “the most significant US manufacturing, testing and R&D presence in the industry.” That is the CEO’s characterization of Polaris’ U.S. presence, not an independently established industry ranking. The earnings-call transcript records the statement.
