The Austin shop’s work is not a universal bolt-in kit: it involves documenting and scanning each car, engineering a custom layout, adapting supporting systems, and road-testing the finished build. Whether a converted classic makes sense as a daily driver depends on the particular car, configuration, budget, and the owner’s expectations.
What Moment Motor Company does
Moment is an Austin-based company focused on converting classic cars to electric power. Its current Classic Line page describes a six-stage process: acquisition and assessment, engine removal, engineering and manufacturing, enhancement, assembly and installation, and testing. That is the company’s published overview; the detail of each project depends on the vehicle and the work agreed with its owner.
A 2024 visit by New Atlas described a shop working across different makes and chassis rather than selling one standardized conversion. At the time of that report, Moment said the featured Chevrolet Blazer was among its 45th conversions, across more than 25 chassis configurations. Those are figures reported in August 2024, not current production totals.
How a custom conversion is engineered
Document and assess the donor car
The New Atlas account describes an initial bumper-to-bumper review and documentation of the car’s condition. The team then removes the engine, transmission, and fuel system as required for the build. The condition assessment matters because existing mechanical, body, or restoration needs can affect both the scope and sequence of conversion work.

Scan, model, and plan the layout
Moment scans key spaces—including the engine compartment, trunk, and transmission tunnel—and uses the resulting measurements to create a digital model. In CAD, the team plans where motors, battery enclosures, and controls can fit. This vehicle-specific packaging work helps address the practical constraints of a classic’s shape, weight distribution, and available space before fabrication begins.
Choose the system and adapt supporting components
Motor, battery capacity, system voltage, charging access, desired performance, and the car’s available space all shape the design. Older cars may rely on engine vacuum for braking assistance or engine-driven hydraulics for power steering, so an electric conversion can require new solutions for those functions. The 2024 report also describes attention to suspension load and mechanical stress; the specific changes depend on the car and configuration.

Moment’s current technology page lists motor options including Cascadia, iNetic, Tesla, and Netgain, along with modular battery enclosures, multiple module types, and integrated battery management. The New Atlas report documented different component choices at the time of its visit, including Tesla and Cascadia Motion motors and custom battery enclosures using cells or modules from CALB and LG Chem. Supplier options can change, so the company’s current page is the better guide to what it presently advertises.
Install, test, and tune
After engineering and fabrication, the system is installed and tested. The New Atlas report says Moment drove and tuned completed cars, checking acceleration and deceleration, suspension behavior, noises, and other details of how the vehicle feels in use. That attention matters because a conversion is not only about making a motor and battery fit; the finished car’s behavior depends on how the whole system works together.

What preservation means in practice
For some owners, preserving the classic’s identity includes keeping the original drivetrain available. The 2024 report says Moment may retain and store or sell original powertrains, and that some conversions are designed so the original drivetrain can be reinstalled. This is the shop’s described approach, not a guarantee that every project is reversible in the same way. Ask what will happen to each removed component and what modifications the specific car will receive before approving a build.
Founder Marc Davis told New Atlas, while discussing the steering and chassis character of a Mercedes-Benz coupe, “We want to keep that.” The remark captures the goal of retaining selected driving characteristics, but it should not be read as a promise that an electric conversion leaves every original sensation or component unchanged.

Range, charging, and performance vary by car
Moment’s published configurations show why a single range or power figure cannot describe all its conversions. In the 2024 feature, the shop generally discussed a 150–200-mile (241–322-km) range target for projects covered in that report, while explaining that battery packaging, power goals, and vehicle specifics influence the result. That historical target is not a universal guarantee.
Moment’s current Signature Line page lists model-specific package examples. Certain Mercedes “pagoda” SL and Porsche 911 offerings are shown with 60 kWh batteries and 150+ miles of range. Other listed examples use different battery and range figures. These are company-published package claims, not independent test results or a promise of real-world range in a particular car.

When comparing proposals, look at the entire configuration rather than treating horsepower or range as standalone measures:
- Vehicle and fit: confirm the exact model, year, chassis, and condition the quote covers.
- Battery and range: ask for the proposed capacity and the assumptions behind any range estimate.
- Charging: confirm charging capability and compatibility with the places you expect to charge.
- Drivetrain: clarify the motor configuration, output, and whether a manual transmission is retained.
- Supporting systems: identify planned changes to brakes, steering, and heating or air conditioning.
- Original parts and scope: document what is retained, stored, sold, or modified, and which restoration or body jobs are included.
- Schedule and price: compare the complete project scope and current estimate, not just an advertised starting point.
Classic Line and Signature Line: which route fits?
Moment describes its Signature Line as a set of offerings for particular listed vehicles, while its Classic Line is presented as a route for a broader range of cars. If the desired model appears on the Signature page, compare that package’s stated configuration with your needs. For an unlisted car—or one with unusual condition or preservation requirements—the Classic Line’s assessment and custom engineering may be more relevant. Neither page substitutes for an individualized project estimate.

All listed figures are company-published and time-sensitive. A car that needs body, paint, or broader restoration work may require that work alongside or before the conversion. Farland Classic Restoration describes restoration work connected to Moment projects, making it a relevant adjacent service to ask about when a donor car needs preparation.
Questions to settle before commissioning a build
- Will my exact car work? Share its model, year, condition, and any unusual modifications, then ask what inspection or assessment is needed.
- What will this build include? Request a written description of the motor, battery, charging setup, transmission plan, brake and steering changes, and any HVAC work.
- What happens to the original drivetrain? Confirm whether parts will be returned, stored, sold, or altered, and whether reinstalling them is feasible for this particular project.
- How will range be estimated? Ask which configuration and assumptions support the estimate, and how your driving pattern and charging access factor into it.
- What restoration work is needed? Separate conversion work from body, paint, and mechanical restoration so that responsibilities and costs are clear.
- What are the current price and schedule? Get a dated, individualized estimate and clarify what could change it.
