Founded by Christian von Koenigsegg in 1994, the company now develops and builds its cars at a former Swedish Air Force site in Ängelholm. Its history—from the CC8S to the Jesko and CC850—shows how that operation has evolved alongside its ambitions.
Who is Christian von Koenigsegg?
Christian von Koenigsegg founded the company in 1994. The company’s official profile presents him as the person behind the marque and its engineering-led approach; it does not establish a separate, independently verified account of his personal working habits or leadership style. The “mind” behind Koenigsegg is best understood through the company’s development priorities and the engineering work it chooses to bring in-house. Koenigsegg’s founder profile and company history provide its own account.
What is inside the Koenigsegg factory?
Koenigsegg moved to its present Ängelholm location in 2003, adapting a former Swedish Air Force facility for automotive work. The company describes the site as a connected environment for making and developing cars—not simply a final-assembly line. Its overview lists composite work, engine development and testing, pre-assembly and final assembly, paint, research and development, and storage for vehicles and parts. Koenigsegg says it builds a handful of bespoke hypercars each year. Its About page describes the facilities and production approach.
The scale grew again with the Gripen Atelier. Koenigsegg says the addition brought 10,000 square metres in 2023, taking the company’s total Ängelholm footprint to 30,000 square metres. These are company-published facility figures, not independently audited measurements. Koenigsegg’s timeline records the expansion.

How are Koenigsegg hypercars made?
The company’s production model combines internal fabrication with a supplier network. Koenigsegg says: “At Koenigsegg, we are able to fabricate intricate, hand-made metal and carbon fiber components in our own hi-tech production facilities.” It also says specialist components come from suppliers, most of them based in Sweden. In-house production therefore does not mean every part is made on site; it means the company retains substantial capability in areas central to its cars while working with outside specialists. The company’s description sets out that balance.
What engineering does Koenigsegg do in-house?
Koenigsegg groups its in-house technology work into five areas. The categories show the breadth of the company’s engineering remit, without implying that every component in each area is made internally.

The company also names Koenigsegg Direct Drive, Light Speed Transmission and AirCore hollow-core composite development as examples of its innovations. Those names point to powertrain, transmission and materials work; the company’s overview is not, by itself, a basis for detailed comparative claims about their performance. See Koenigsegg’s technology overview.
A design detail that shows the packaging challenge
Koenigsegg’s removable carbon-fiber roof is designed to stow in the front of the car. The company says accommodating it required packaging space around the front subframe, suspension and steering components. The goal, in Koenigsegg’s account, is to pair the security of a coupe with open-top driving. That is a useful illustration of how a seemingly simple usability feature can affect the layout of major vehicle systems. The company explains the stowable roof design.

How Koenigsegg’s cars developed
The company’s history traces a progression from an early concept to customer cars and a larger production and development site. Koenigsegg’s model counts and performance records below are company-reported historical claims; they should not be treated as independently verified results.
| Milestone | What it shows | Company-reported context |
|---|---|---|
| CC prototype | The early concept became a publicly demonstrated car. | Koenigsegg says it was publicly driven in 1996. |
| CC8S | The first production model in the company’s history. | Koenigsegg says the first was built in 2002 and delivered in 2003; its production account lists six examples for 2002–2003. |
| CCR | A subsequent model in the company’s early production period. | Koenigsegg lists 14 examples for 2004–2006. |
| CCX and CCXR | Further branches of the early model line, included in the company’s history. | The timeline records the models; the figures cited here do not establish a comparable production total. |
| One:1 | A later performance-focused milestone. | Koenigsegg’s account lists six customer cars and one factory development car for 2014–2015. |
| Jesko | A later-generation model in the company’s continuing hypercar program. | The company history records the model; no comparable production total is established here. |
| CC850 | A later model included in the company’s timeline. | Koenigsegg announced 70 planned units; that announcement is not confirmation that 70 were ultimately completed. |
Koenigsegg says the 2003 move followed a fire at its Margretetorp site that destroyed some early records. The company’s own timeline is therefore the source for the sequence and counts above, rather than an audited production register. Read the official history.

Can you visit the Koenigsegg factory?
Koenigsegg’s factory-tour page currently says tours are “Unavailable until further notice” and are on hold. It says there is no preliminary booking or waiting list until new slots are released. The page also lists seasonal Experience Center dates, which may change; check its current details before making travel plans. Check Koenigsegg’s factory-tour information.
Is this the documentary or series called Inside Koenigsegg?
Not necessarily. The title “Inside Koenigsegg: The Mind And Factory Building The World’s Craziest Hypercars” is not established as the name of a specific documentary or series. Related material includes APEX: The Story of the Hypercar, a feature-length documentary centered on Christian von Koenigsegg and the hypercar project context, and separate video material titled Inside Koenigsegg. These are distinct works, not confirmation that the title refers to either one. Apple TV’s page for APEX identifies the documentary; availability can vary by country and date. Auto Motor & Sport also describes an “Inside Koenigsegg” video about carbon fiber.
