NHRA’s class overview says these cars can run under 3.7 seconds at more than 330 mph, while burning up to 15 gallons of nitromethane in a single run. Those are class-level figures, not guarantees for every pass—and the fastest figure cited here is a dated record, not a claim about today’s standings.
How fast is a Top Fuel dragster?
NHRA’s class overview says Top Fuel cars can run under 3.7 seconds at more than 330 mph. The figures describe what the class can achieve; an individual pass may not reach both benchmarks.
For a dated example, NHRA reported that Brittany Force ran 343.16 mph in 3.645 seconds at Sonoma on July 25, 2025. NHRA described that pass as a record at the time. Top Fuel speeds continue to advance, so this dated result should not be treated as confirmation of the current record. NHRA’s Sonoma report
How much horsepower does a Top Fuel dragster have?
NHRA describes the engine as a supercharged, fuel-injected 500-cubic-inch adaptation of the Chrysler Hemi. Its class overview gives the output as 10,000 horsepower. In an April 26, 2025 event report, NHRA described Doug Kalitta’s Mac Tools dragster as an 11,000-horsepower car. These are figures published in different contexts, not one exact, independently measured output for every Top Fuel engine. NHRA’s Top Fuel overview · NHRA’s April 2025 event report

How much fuel does it burn in one run?
NHRA says a Top Fuel dragster can burn up to 15 gallons of nitromethane during a run. “Up to” matters: it is a class-overview maximum, not a claim that every pass consumes that amount. Even at that qualification, the quantity is striking for a race that lasts only a few seconds. NHRA’s Top Fuel overview
How long and heavy is a Top Fuel dragster?
NHRA lists a Top Fuel car at 25 feet long and 2,330 pounds in race-ready trim. Its frame is made from chromoly steel tubing and carbon-fiber composite. These specifications belong to a purpose-built drag-racing machine, not a modified production car. NHRA’s Top Fuel overview

How is a Top Fuel dragster different from a Funny Car?
NHRA places both Top Fuel and Funny Car among its professional categories, and both use a supercharged, fuel-injected 500-cubic-inch engine. Their vehicle forms differ: Funny Cars have a shorter wheelbase and a carbon-fiber body shaped to resemble a production car, while Top Fuel cars have the long, exposed dragster layout. Similar engines do not make the categories identical. NHRA’s category overview

Top Fuel and Funny Car traditionally raced a quarter-mile, or 1,320 feet. In 2008, NHRA shortened the distance to 1,000 feet following the death of driver Scott Kalitta at Englishtown. The change altered how far the cars race; it should not be read as eliminating the dangers of the sport. NHRA’s account of the 2008 change

The shift sits within a longer history of safety rules. NHRA’s historical account reproduces a 1961 rule requiring that a driver’s seat be constructed, braced, mounted, and upholstered to provide full back and shoulder protection in an upset, spin-out, or collision. Safety measures have developed over time, but the 2008 distance change is a specific response to its historical circumstances, not proof that risk disappeared. NHRA’s historical account
