Inline-six engines have powered cars with very different missions, from BMW’s lightweight, motorsport-developed 3.0 CSL to Toyota’s grand-touring Supras and the modern GR Supra. Those examples make a strong enthusiast case for the layout’s staying power. They do not prove it is objectively the best engine design, and the available model-specific evidence supports four examples—not a fully verified list of ten.
What the inline-six case can—and cannot—prove
“Best design ever” is an enthusiast’s thesis, not an engineering verdict established by these cars alone. The documented examples show the inline-six recurring across touring-car heritage, Japanese grand touring and a contemporary sports car. They also show why any comparison needs to keep generation, market and specification attached: a historic BMW CSL, a turbocharged Supra and a 2020 GR Supra are not interchangeable engine applications.
The profiles below use manufacturer-published descriptions and figures. They focus on what each source establishes, rather than treating peak output as a universal measure of superiority.
BMW 3.0 CSL: a lightweight six tied to motorsport
1973-era BMW 3.0 CSL
BMW’s account of the 1973 3.0 CSL describes a 3,153 cm³ inline-six producing 206 hp at 5,600 rpm. BMW Group PressClub gives an unladen weight of 1,270 kg for the cited historic CSL and highlights its lightweight construction and motorsport development. These figures describe the referenced version, not every CSL configuration. BMW M: The BMW 3.0 CSL from 1973; BMW Group PressClub: The BMW 3.0 CSL.

The CSL makes the enthusiast argument through context as much as output: BMW presents the car as a lightweight model developed with motorsport in view. That is a specific historical application, not evidence that every inline-six—or every car using one—shares the same advantages.
Toyota Supra: the inline-six across generations
A40/A50-era Supra
Toyota’s vehicle-lineage history records inline-six choices for the Celica XX/Supra lineage, including a 3.0-liter DOHC turbocharged 7M-GTE rated at 230 PS in the cited representative grade. That rating belongs to that stated engine and grade; it should not be applied to every A40/A50-era car or market. Toyota: 75 Years of TOYOTA—Vehicle Lineage, Celica XX/Supra.

A80 Supra
Toyota USA’s Supra lineage account identifies the fourth-generation A80’s 2JZ inline-six and describes the turbo model as producing 320 hp in its U.S. account. The market context matters: that figure is not a specification for every A80 variant sold worldwide. Toyota USA Newsroom: The Supra Lineage.
The A40/A50 and A80 examples show the layout appearing in different Supra generations and engine configurations. They establish continuity in Toyota’s lineage, not a single unchanging engine specification.

2020 Toyota GR Supra 3.0
For the 2020 GR Supra launch, Toyota announced a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbo inline-six rated at 335 hp and 365 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Toyota projected a 0–60 mph time of 4.1 seconds. The acceleration figure is the manufacturer’s launch-era projection, and the power and torque figures are launch specifications—not figures to assume for every later model year. This example brings the Supra’s documented inline-six story into a modern sports-car setting. Its launch specification is useful evidence of one application, but it does not settle how the layout compares with alternatives across later GR Supra years or other cars.

Why this is not a verified ten-car ranking
The title’s ten-car framing promises ten distinct, substantiated profiles. The available manufacturer material supports one BMW 3.0 CSL example and three Supra examples across generations; it does not provide enough model-level evidence to responsibly fill six more slots. Listing other famous inline-six cars from memory would make the count look complete without meeting the same evidence standard.
Nor do these sources establish a complete technical case for the layout’s trade-offs. They document model history, selected specifications and manufacturer context, but do not provide a comparative engineering analysis of packaging, weight distribution, cost, refinement or performance against other engine layouts. The fair conclusion is narrower: the inline-six has a documented, varied role in notable enthusiast cars, while “best ever” remains a defensible preference rather than a proven universal ranking.
