The automaker says the engine is capable of up to 1,000 horsepower, but the figure is a stated capability—not a published test result or a specification for a retail QX80. The build shows one possible performance direction for a luxury SUV; INFINITI has not announced it for customer sale.
What is the QX80 R-Spec?
The QX80 R-Spec is an extreme INFINITI build that made its public debut at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. INFINITI describes it as a study combining power and luxury, rather than announcing a production model. The company’s official QX80 R-Spec page presents the vehicle as a showcase for what its engineering and design teams can explore.
INFINITI VP Tiago Castro called it “extreme, aggressive and a showcase of what INFINITI can do when our engineering and design teams take off all the guardrails.” That framing matters: the R-Spec is evidence of a design and engineering exercise, not proof that a 1,000-hp luxury SUV is on its way to showrooms.
How does the R-Spec claim up to 1,000 horsepower?
INFINITI says the build uses a GT-R-sourced 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6, extensively modified with custom turbochargers, intercoolers, exhaust manifolds and an upgraded fuel system. The automaker describes the engine as capable of up to 1,000 hp. Its page does not provide an independently verified output test or acceleration figures, so the number should be read as INFINITI’s stated capability for this particular build.

The build’s description includes chassis, wheel and body modifications alongside the engine work:

These details make the R-Spec more than an engine swap in INFINITI’s account. They do not, however, establish that the components are retail parts or that the build can be replicated on an ordinary QX80.
How does it compare with the production QX80?
INFINITI’s 2027 QX80 performance page lists the production model with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, up to 450 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, and up to 18 combined MPG. Those are production-model specifications, not R-Spec figures.
| Vehicle | Engine and stated output | Status | Documented supporting changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| QX80 R-Spec | Modified GT-R-sourced 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6; INFINITI says it is capable of up to 1,000 hp. No torque, fuel-economy or acceleration test figure is stated on the official R-Spec page. | SEMA build and study; customer production or sale is not announced. | Modified GT-R carbon-ceramic brakes, custom coilovers, 24-inch wheels, 315-section-width tires and bespoke bodywork. |
| 2027 production QX80 | 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6; up to 450 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque; up to 18 combined MPG, according to INFINITI’s 2027 model page. | Production-model specifications. | The cited performance page does not state R-Spec-style modifications for the production model. |
The figures describe different vehicles and come from different contexts: a modified show build and a production-model specification page. They are not comparable test results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the R-Spec point to the future of luxury SUVs?
It points to an idea INFINITI is willing to explore: combining the size and luxury positioning of its flagship SUV with GT-R-derived hardware and an unusually aggressive visual treatment. That makes the build a signal of design and engineering ambition, but not a forecast of a new product or a commitment to sell a high-output QX80.
