That means most shoppers comparing them today are weighing a current or used QX60 against a used CX-9—not choosing between two new SUVs. The right pick depends on the specific model year, trim, seat layout, condition and price.
Availability: the CX-9 is a used-SUV choice
Mazda announced that CX-9 production for the U.S. would end after 2023, with the CX-90 taking its place in the lineup. The QX60 remains in Infiniti’s lineup. You may compare a new QX60 with a used CX-9, or compare used examples of both; those are different shopping decisions. Mazda’s discontinuation announcement explains the transition.
Price: compare equivalent vehicles, not old sticker prices
The announced starting MSRP for the 2023 CX-9 was $38,750. Infiniti lists a $50,200 starting MSRP for the 2027 QX60 PURE FWD, with a $1,350 destination charge listed separately. These are original new-vehicle prices from different model years, not comparable current transaction prices or used-market values. Infiniti’s 2027 QX60 specifications provide the current trim figure; Mazda’s 2023 announcement gives the CX-9 MSRP.
For a useful price comparison, match the model years and trims as closely as possible, then account for mileage, condition, equipment, fees and local inventory. A used CX-9’s original MSRP does not indicate what one should cost now.

Engines, fuel and economy
2027 Infiniti QX60
The cited 2027 PURE FWD specification lists a 2.0-liter VC Turbo engine rated at up to 268 horsepower. Its EPA estimates are 22 mpg city, 28 highway and 24 combined. These are figures for the specified trim and configuration; other QX60 versions can differ. Check the exact vehicle’s specifications on Infiniti’s QX60 specifications page.
2023 Mazda CX-9
Mazda lists a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G turbocharged engine paired with a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD for the 2023 CX-9. Output depends on fuel: 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with 93-octane fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft with regular 87-octane fuel. The cited Mazda release does not provide a directly comparable EPA fuel-economy figure, so these figures alone do not establish which SUV is more economical. See Mazda’s 2023 CX-9 details.

Seating: verify the CX-9’s second row
The cited 2027 QX60 PURE FWD seats seven. CX-9 capacity and layout depend on trim: the 2023 Touring has second-row captain’s chairs and seats six, while Touring Plus comes standard with a second-row bench for seven and could also be configured for six. Confirm the actual vehicle’s seat configuration rather than relying on a model name alone. Mazda’s 2023 model announcement describes these layouts.
Cargo room: figures need matching model years and measurement conditions
Mazda’s 2022 CX-9 brochure lists 14.4 cubic feet behind the third row, 38.2 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 71.2 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. These are 2022 figures, not confirmed specifications for every 2023 CX-9. The cited QX60 page lists 14.5 cubic feet for the 2027 PURE FWD, but the available figures are not an apples-to-apples comparison across aligned model years and measurement conventions. Towing: the published limits favor the QX60, but equipment matters
Infiniti lists up to 6,000 pounds of towing capacity for the 2027 QX60; equipment and configuration affect the rating. Mazda’s 2022 CX-9 brochure lists up to 3,500 pounds. The CX-9 figure is specific to that brochure year and should not be assumed for every model year or configuration. Mazda says the 2023 CX-9 earned a Good rating in the IIHS’s new side-impact test. That result does not establish which SUV is safer overall: an equivalent model-year-specific QX60 rating has not been verified here. For a fair safety comparison, look up ratings for the exact years and configurations you are considering rather than treating a single test result as a head-to-head verdict. Mazda’s statement appears in its 2023 CX-9 announcement.

Which one should you choose?
- Consider the QX60 if you want the option of buying new, need a seven-seat configuration in the cited PURE FWD, or are prioritizing the higher published towing figure. Confirm the exact trim’s equipment and rating.
- Consider a used CX-9 if you are shopping the used market and find a vehicle whose price, condition and configuration suit you. Check whether the second row is a bench or captain’s chairs, and verify the specifications for that model year.
- Compare actual listings when price is the deciding factor. Original MSRPs from 2023 and 2027 do not substitute for current asking prices on vehicles with comparable age, mileage and condition.
