What INEOS announced about the Italian Army order
In a 1 October 2026 announcement, INEOS Automotive said the Italian Army awarded it a “substantial” order for Grenadier 4x4s. The company called it the first sizable Grenadier order from a NATO country’s military. INEOS named ATflow, its regional distributor, as the party expected to begin deliveries in early 2027.
The announcement does not give a vehicle count, unit price, total contract value, or detailed Italian specification. “Substantial” is the company’s description; it is not a published fleet size or budget figure. The available procurement details come from INEOS, and no Italian Army or Ministry of Defence confirmation is established here.
What is known about the vehicles—and what is not
INEOS says the Italian Army selected the Grenadier for its range of body styles and wheelbases, fewer parts intended to simplify maintenance, and solid axles suited to carrying heavy loads over hostile terrain for extended periods. That is the manufacturer’s account of the selection rationale, not an independently documented Italian assessment or the result of a published head-to-head trial.

The company has not specified the Italian vehicles’ body style, wheelbase, equipment, protection level, or operational role. The announcement therefore does not establish that these Grenadiers are armoured or that they will be used in combat. The phrase “going to war” makes for a dramatic headline, but the confirmed detail is an order for military vehicles, with their precise configuration and mission undisclosed.
How the Italian order differs from Austria’s and the UK’s programmes
INEOS has also described defence-related Grenadier activity in Austria and the United Kingdom. Those developments are separate from the Italian order and are at different procurement stages.

INEOS announced Team Grenadier with partners SMT Defence and NMS UK in June 2026. In September, it said Hobson Industries and TVS Supply Chain Solutions had joined the consortium. For the UK proposal, the company describes a ladder-frame chassis, permanent four-wheel drive, beam axles and high payload capacity; it says the Grenadier and Quartermaster base platforms would support the Light Mobility Vehicle variants. These are details of the platform and UK bid, not confirmation of the Italian vehicles’ equipment.

INEOS Automotive Chief Commercial Officer Mike Whittington framed the military agreements as evidence of demand for the vehicle, saying: “In a world where geopolitical tensions are rising, military forces are bolstering their capabilities and resilience, they need the best, modern equipment available. As a robust and highly capable vehicle, this is what the Grenadier was built for – to unremittingly serve armed forces in mission-critical roles. Our most recent military agreements signal a huge vote of confidence in Grenadier as a benchmark already, as talks with other nations’ defence procurement teams continue.”

That is a company executive’s promotional statement, not an endorsement from the Italian Army. The procurement announcement remains limited on the particulars that would show how the vehicles will be equipped and used.
