India’s E20 petrol contains up to 20% ethanol. Government-cited studies have not found significant overall performance changes or widespread abnormal engine wear attributable to ethanol blending, but that does not guarantee compatibility for every vehicle. The practical answer depends on your model: check its E20 marking, owner’s manual or manufacturer guidance. Mileage loss is possible, and the best official figures available here are category estimates—not predictions for an individual car or bike.
What E20 means for drivers in India
E20 is petrol blended with up to 20% ethanol. India’s ethanol-blending programme introduced higher blends through a phased rollout, supported by fuel standards and vehicle-safety requirements. The NITI Aayog and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas roadmap published in June 2021 describes those standards and the vehicle-compatibility framework: Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India: 2020–2025.
That 2021 document is a historical planning roadmap, not a current timetable. Later Government statements in July 2026 describe the subsequent rollout and report on studies and operating experience; those findings should be read as institutional assessments, not a guarantee for every vehicle.
Will E20 petrol damage your engine?
Government-reported studies do not establish widespread abnormal engine wear or significant overall performance problems from E20 use. In a July 2026 statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said studies by ARAI, SIAM, IOCL, IIP and manufacturers covered durability, drivability, startability, corrosion resistance, material compatibility, emissions and fuel efficiency. A December 2025 answer in the Rajya Sabha similarly said studies by IOCL, SIAM and ARAI found no significant variation in vehicle performance and no adverse impact on components. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question 1225.
In a separate July 2026 clarification, the Government said more than 20 crore two-wheelers and more than 3 crore petrol cars had operated on the blends it described without verified evidence of widespread engine failure or vehicle breakdown attributable to ethanol blending. Those are Government-reported aggregate figures, not an independent census; they do not show that failures never happen or prove that every individual model is suitable. Why vehicle-specific compatibility still matters
Population-level study results cannot determine whether a particular older car or bike is designed and calibrated for E20. The 2021 roadmap discusses the need for material compatibility and engine tuning as ethanol blends rise. It also says the manufacturer defines the ethanol-blend compatibility level for a vehicle and displays it visibly. Check the vehicle’s own marking, manual or manufacturer guidance rather than assuming that all models—or all vehicles of a certain age—are equivalent.

These are roadmap estimates for the stated categories, not measured results for every model or a promise of the change you will see at the pump. The sources cited here do not provide a representative model-by-model real-world mileage dataset. Route, traffic, load, maintenance and driving style can also affect observed fuel economy, so a before-and-after comparison is most useful when conditions are similar.
How to check whether your vehicle is E20 compatible
- Look for the compatibility marking. The roadmap says the manufacturer defines the blend level and displays it visibly on the vehicle. Check the relevant fuel or compatibility label.
- Consult the owner’s manual. Look for the specified ethanol blend or ask an authorised service centre to help interpret the vehicle’s guidance.
- Ask the manufacturer if the answer is unclear. Give the exact model, model year and variant; do not rely on a general claim about a brand or vehicle age.
- If you notice a fault, get it diagnosed. Describe the symptoms to the manufacturer or a qualified service centre instead of assuming E20 is the cause.
How to interpret a mileage or engine complaint
Two drivers can report different outcomes without either report establishing what will happen to every vehicle. The official mileage estimates distinguish vehicle types and design/calibration categories, while the roadmap assigns compatibility to the manufacturer. To make a comparison more useful, note the exact vehicle and model year, its stated ethanol compatibility, the driving conditions behind any mileage measurements, and whether a suspected mechanical symptom has been professionally diagnosed.
