Indian Motorcycle traces its origins to 1901, when George M. Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom opened a factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Its history is not one of uninterrupted production: the company says it stopped building all models in 1953, before the name entered a later revival and Polaris Industries acquired Indian Motorcycle in 2011.
How Indian Motorcycle began
Indian Motorcycle’s official history traces its roots to 1897, when George M. Hendee founded a bicycle manufacturer called Hendee Manufacturing. In 1901, Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom, the company’s co-founder and chief engineer, opened a factory in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. That year is the origin the brand uses for its motorcycle heritage.
The early company quickly tied engineering to competition. Indian Motorcycle says Hedstrom reached 56 mph on a New York City–Springfield run in 1903, and that the company won the first motorcycle race held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909. These are claims from the brand’s own historical account.
Early engineering and signature models
V-twin development
Indian Motorcycle says it built a factory V-twin racing motorcycle in 1906 and introduced a version for consumer models in the 1907 model year. The company describes it as the first American V-twin production motorcycle engine; that distinction is the brand’s characterization.

The company’s account also credits its 1913 production motorcycle with being the first to offer full front-and-rear suspension, followed in 1914 by an electric starter and integrated electric lighting. Such milestones help explain why Indian’s early story is about both racing and practical road motorcycles.
Scout, Chief, and the company name
The first Scout arrived in 1920, followed by the Chief in 1922. In 1923, Hendee Manufacturing Company changed its name to The Indian Motocycle Company. “Motocycle,” without the second “r,” was the spelling used in the company’s name at the time.

Racing and wartime production
Indian Motorcycle’s account places the brand in both competition and wartime manufacturing. It says the company built close to 50,000 motorcycles during the First World War period. For 1940–1945, it reports that nearly all production went to the Allied cause, including more than 35,000 motorcycles and $24 million in parts. These totals are company-reported figures.
In 1937, according to the brand, Ed Kretz won the first Daytona 200 on an Indian Sport Scout. The Scout’s racing associations continued long after production of the original models ended: the company says Burt Munro rode a heavily modified 1920 Scout Streamliner at Bonneville in 1967, setting an official 184.087 mph land-speed record and reaching an unofficial 205.67 mph.

What happened after production stopped in 1953?
Indian Motorcycle’s official history says production of all models ceased in 1953. That marked a break in the original company’s manufacturing story, so the brand’s long heritage should not be mistaken for continuous motorcycle production from 1901 onward.
The brand’s account identifies Polaris Industries’ acquisition of Indian Motorcycle in 2011 as the start of a renewed period, which it describes as a period of renewed success. The available chronology does not establish every ownership or company-identity transition between 1953 and 2011, so it is more accurate to describe this as a later revival than to imply an unbroken corporate or manufacturing line.

The official model archive includes a 2026 model-year section and lists families such as Scout, Scout Sixty, Chief, Springfield, Chieftain, Challenger, Roadmaster, Pursuit, and Elite. Model-year listings can vary by market and date; the archive establishes the families represented there, not that every model is available for sale in every region.
Across its history, Indian Motorcycle’s defining arc is a Springfield origin, early engineering and racing milestones, a production stop in 1953, and a later revival under Polaris ownership. The timeline is a legacy with a real interruption, not a single uninterrupted run.
