A familiar badge can make a new vehicle easier to explain, but it does not make the vehicle the same as its predecessor. The examples below range from genuine returns—such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Chevrolet Camaro—to planned, rumored and unresolved revivals. The decisive questions are how long the gap lasted, what vehicle the name now identifies, and whether the automaker has actually put it on sale.
What a nameplate revival really means
Automakers reuse names because heritage supplies an immediate story: buyers already recognize the badge, its associations and its place in the company’s history. But a name can move to another segment, another platform or an entirely different powertrain. Autoblog’s August 28, 2025 roundup uses the Ford Bronco, Acura Integra, Toyota Supra, Dodge Dart, Mitsubishi Eclipse/Cross and Ford Mustang Mach-E to illustrate that range. The Mustang Mach-E, for example, puts a historic performance name on an electric SUV rather than a conventional coupe.
That makes “it came back” an incomplete answer. A revival may be a direct continuation, a new interpretation, a corporate repositioning or only a proposal that never reaches showrooms.
Documented and launched comebacks
Honda Prelude: a 2001 coupe planned as a 2026 hybrid
Honda ended Prelude production in 2001. Autoblog’s 2025 feature describes the 2023 Prelude Concept and a production version expected as a 2026 model. The reported setup uses a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and two electric motors, rated at 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.

The original Prelude was a sporty two-door coupe. The reported return keeps the name’s performance-oriented positioning but changes the mechanical formula to a hybrid system. Because the source describes the production car as expected for the 2026 model year, that timing should be treated as the reported plan rather than proof that every market was already selling it.
Bugatti: more than 30 years dormant, then a new supercar business
MotorTrend reports that the Bugatti name was dormant for more than 30 years before Romano Artioli revived it in 1987. Volkswagen acquired the marque in 1998, and the first production Bugatti of the Volkswagen era, the Veyron, arrived in 2005.
This was not a simple model replacement. The badge moved through a revival by a new owner and then into another corporate era before reaching production. The Veyron established that the revived name could represent an ultra-high-performance brand even when the company, ownership and product program had changed substantially.
Alpine A110: a 1995 shutdown followed by a 2020 relaunch
Renault ended the Alpine name in 1995. The Alpine A110 returned in 2020 as a revitalized brand positioned to replace Renault Sport.

Rather than reviving an old Alpine model unchanged, Renault used the name to create a renewed performance identity. The A110 therefore represents a brand-level comeback: the mission remained sporty driving, while the organization and product strategy were rebuilt around a modern vehicle.
Mercedes-Maybach: from failed standalone cars to profitable derivatives
Mercedes-Benz shelved the Maybach project in 2011 after the Maybach 57 and 62 struggled. MotorTrend says the later strategy attached Maybach to special versions of established Mercedes models and eventually made the business profitable.

This is a revival without a single replacement model. The original approach asked buyers to support a standalone ultra-luxury range; the later approach used familiar Mercedes vehicles as the foundation and added Maybach-specific exclusivity. The badge survived by changing its commercial role.
Toyota Land Cruiser: a three-year U.S. absence
Kelley Blue Book’s August 11, 2026 roundup counts the Land Cruiser as a memorable comeback story: it left U.S. showrooms after 2021 and returned for the 2024 model year.
That is roughly a three-year U.S. hiatus, shorter than most examples here. The name returned to the same broad mission—an off-road-oriented utility vehicle—rather than being transferred to an unrelated segment. Kelley Blue Book’s roundup does not establish a specific powertrain or platform comparison in the cited passage, so those details are not used to claim mechanical continuity.
Chevrolet Camaro: back after an eight-year hiatus
Kelley Blue Book also identifies the Camaro as returning after an eight-year hiatus. Its roundup does not specify the exact model years in the cited description, but the gap is long enough to separate two product cycles rather than represent a normal facelift.
The Camaro came back as a performance-car nameplate, making it more product-continuous than a coupe name moved to an SUV. The cited roundup does not provide a powertrain or platform comparison, so the meaningful confirmed fact here is the interruption and subsequent return—not that every component or specification was carried over.
Reported plans and unresolved revivals
A project can be publicly discussed without being a purchasable vehicle. The following cases are best read as plans, rumors or open development programs, not as completed comebacks.

Acura RSX: a coupe name planned for an electric compact SUV
The RSX was discontinued after the 2006 model year. Autoblog describes a 2027 RSX as an electric compact SUV and says it would be Acura’s second EV after the ZDX.
If that reported plan reaches production, the hiatus would be about 21 years. The change in mission is substantial: the original RSX was a compact sport coupe, while the proposed successor is a battery-electric utility vehicle. The name would provide continuity of attitude, not body style or propulsion.
Mitsubishi Montero: possible Armada-based return
The Montero disappeared from the U.S. market after the 2006 model year. Autoblog characterizes a possible return based on the Nissan Armada as industry speculation and gives no confirmed production details.
That leaves both the return date and the final vehicle unresolved. Even if an Armada-based model were approved, it would be a large SUV interpretation of the Montero name rather than evidence that the original U.S.-market product had simply resumed.

The Celica has been absent from Toyota’s lineup since 2006. Autoblog reports a rumor of a GR Celica, possibly for 2027, while explicitly stating that nothing has been confirmed.
The potential gap would be about 21 years if a 2027 model arrived. Until Toyota announces a production vehicle, the Celica remains a rumored comeback, not a launch date or a specification sheet.

Mazda’s rotary sports car: development without a revealed production model
Mazda discontinued the RX-8 in 2011, ending its rotary sports-car era. Autoblog says Mazda has a rotary sports car in development but that no production version has been officially unveiled.
The hiatus is therefore at least 15 years by 2026, but no return year can be calculated. “Rotary in development” also does not establish whether the eventual vehicle will be an RX-8 successor, use the RX name or share the old car’s layout.

International Harvester Scout: an announced electric reboot awaiting its product
Volkswagen announced in 2022 that it was reviving the International Harvester Scout name for ground-up electric vehicles. MotorTrend says the outcome cannot be judged until the product reaches the market.
The new mission is explicitly electric and ground-up, so this is not a restoration of an old Scout drivetrain or platform. The announcement confirms an intended vehicle family, but not a retail launch, production specification or commercial success.

Why some revivals work and others fail
MotorTrend frames the decision as a risk-and-reward calculation. Benjamin Hunting wrote, “Reviving a classic automotive brand is a dice roll.” A recognized name can lower the cost of explaining a new product and attract former fans, but it also creates a precise target for criticism. Owners may reject a vehicle that abandons the original mission, while new buyers may not care about the history at all.
- Heritage helps most when the new vehicle still expresses the old promise. The Land Cruiser remains an off-road utility name, and the Camaro remains a performance-car name.
- A segment jump raises the explanation burden. A proposed electric RSX SUV or a Mustang-badged electric SUV asks buyers to accept a different shape and powertrain.
- Corporate strategy can matter as much as the product. Bugatti changed owners before the Veyron, and Maybach became viable after moving from standalone cars to Mercedes-based special versions.
- An announcement is not proof of demand. Scout’s electric vehicles cannot be commercially judged until they reach customers, and rumors such as Montero or Celica have no confirmed production outcome.
How to judge a revived name before buying
- Identify the exact vehicle. Check whether the badge is on a coupe, sedan, SUV, truck or crossover; the segment may have changed.
- Check the propulsion system. A combustion predecessor and a hybrid or EV successor will differ in weight, charging or refueling, maintenance and driving character.
- Separate a model-year announcement from showroom availability. “Expected” or “planned” does not establish that inventory exists in your country.
- Compare capability rather than nostalgia. Look at dimensions, cargo space, towing, seating, range, performance and off-road equipment for the current vehicle.
- Verify the status. Treat a launched model differently from a reported plan, a rumor or a development statement with no production vehicle.
The badge tells you where the story started. The platform, powertrain, size and capability tell you what the vehicle actually is.
