The Iconic Autobody 387 Speedster is a Porsche 987 Boxster converted with styling inspired by the 356 Speedster. It is not an original 356: the Boxster remains its mechanical foundation, while a bespoke body and revised cabin give it a classic silhouette.
What is the Iconic Autobody 387 based on?
Iconic Autobody identifies the 387 as a 987-based Speedster. The donor is a Porsche 987 Boxster, not a 356. The builder presents it as a modern car with retro styling, combining a contemporary Boxster base with design cues from Porsche’s classic open sports car. Iconic Autobody’s 387 page describes the model and its current advertised features.
That distinction matters: the 387’s resemblance to a 356 Speedster does not give it the original car’s provenance or construction. It is a specialist conversion of a later Porsche.
What changes in the conversion?
A 2020 account by auto motor und sport describes the 987’s original body and interior being removed before the bespoke outer body and revised cabin are installed. The report identifies the body material as heat-resistant glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GRP). It also describes a custom heated windscreen, LED lighting, carpets and roll hoops integrated beneath the rear body humps.

The same 2020 report says the front suspension is modified to lower the new body and that the roof operates electrically. Those are details reported for the model at that time, not a specification guarantee for every build. Iconic Autobody’s current page lists an electric hood, LED daytime running lights, roll-hoop fairings and a bespoke heated windscreen. The builder says the exterior and interior can be tailored, and currently advertises a 16-week turnaround; ask the company to confirm the schedule and specification for a particular order.
Which engines and performance figures have been reported?
The 387’s performance depends on the donor Boxster. Auto motor und sport’s 2020 article described a manual 2.7-litre example rated at 245 PS and reported a 3.4-litre, 310 PS version as another available option. These are historical figures from that report, not a current drivetrain list published by the builder.

For the 2.7-litre example, the 2020 article attributed a seven-second 0–60 mph time and a 251 km/h top speed to founder Brian Hale. It reported a 274 km/h top speed for the 3.4-litre version. These are attributed claims, not independently tested results; they should not be treated as performance guarantees for a specific converted car.
What does the conversion cost?
Auto motor und sport reported a 2020 price of £58,000 plus the donor car. That is a historical figure, not a current quote. Iconic Autobody’s current website does not publish a price, so contact the builder for present pricing and clarify what the quoted build includes.

Can you buy a 387 conversion kit?
Design911 lists an Iconic Autobody 387 Speedster kit for specified 987 Boxster variants. Its fitment listing covers the 2.7-litre 987 Boxster for model years 2005–12 and the 3.2- or 3.4-litre 987 Boxster S for model years 2006–12. The retailer describes GRP panels and fitting brackets, with listed options including roll-hoop fairings, cosmetic overrider bars, bespoke 19-inch three-piece wheels, LED brake lights and 356-style rear lamps. How does the 387 relate to the original 356 Speedster?
The styling reference has a real historical lineage, but the two cars are fundamentally different. Porsche’s 356 history traces Speedster variants to 1952 and identifies the 356 America Roadster as their forefather. Porsche says that predecessor was built only 16 times. In autumn 1954, Porsche introduced the first model to carry “Speedster” in its name: a less expensive 356 version with a raked windscreen, reduced interior equipment and a rain top.
The 387 borrows the visual language, not the original car’s identity. The available sources do not establish a like-for-like independent road test of the 387 against an original 356 Speedster, so their performance or driving character should not be compared as if tested under the same conditions.

Is this the same car as the Signature Autosports 387?
No. Iconic Autobody’s 387 is the UK 987 Boxster-based conversion described above. Signature Autosports’ 387 Speedster Heritage is a separate US conversion. A 2026 Sport Auto story concerns Signature Autosports in North Carolina; its specifications and pricing belong to that distinct car, not to Iconic Autobody’s 387.
