Ian Callum’s most memorable designs include the Aston Martin DB7, Vanquish and DB9, plus Jaguar’s XK, XF, XJ and F-Type. “Prettiest” is a matter of taste, not an objective ranking; the case for Callum’s cars lies in their proportions, distinct brand character and the range of work he led from breakthrough production cars to the unrealized C-X75 concept.

Which cars did Ian Callum design?

Jaguar Land Rover credits Callum with the Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish during his time at TWR Design, and identifies the DB9 and a broad group of Jaguar models as work from his subsequent career. The precise contribution varied by project: these were team efforts, and Callum’s own estimates of his share should not be confused with independently established design-credit records.

Car Role in Callum’s career What the record supports
Aston Martin DB7 Breakthrough at TWR JLR credits Callum with its design; he called it his first really important car and, in another interview, the most important car of his life.
Aston Martin Vanquish Follow-up Aston Martin design JLR credits Callum with responsibility for its design at TWR.
Aston Martin DB9 Development spanning his move to Jaguar JLR says he continued to manage Aston Martin design and develop the DB9 after joining Jaguar. Callum later estimated he was responsible for nearly all of its design, including the interior.
Aston Martin V8 Vantage Aston Martin sports car Callum estimated that he had done “a good 80 percent” of its design; that is his retrospective estimate.
Jaguar XK, XF and XJ Jaguar design leadership JLR lists these among the work representing Jaguar’s direction under Callum’s leadership.
Jaguar F-Type Sports-car expression of Jaguar’s design direction JLR includes it among the cars associated with that direction; Callum expressed particular pleasure at launching it.
Jaguar XE, second-generation XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and I-Pace Broader Jaguar-era portfolio JLR identifies the XE and second-generation XF; Autocar’s retrospective also discusses the F-Pace, E-Pace and I-Pace as part of the portfolio created under his leadership.
Jaguar C-X75 Unproduced concept JLR identifies it as a concept that drew attention at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. It did not become a production car.

Callum studied industrial design at Glasgow School of Art and automobile design at the Royal College of Art. JLR’s 2001 biography says he spent 12 years in Ford design studios before becoming chief designer at TWR Design, then joined Jaguar in 1999 while continuing to manage Aston Martin design and develop the DB9. That progression helps explain why his best-known work spans two marques with different personalities.

Why the DB7 became a defining design

The DB7 is the clearest starting point: it was a major professional breakthrough for Callum and a defining Aston Martin project. In a 2019 profile, he named its launch as one of the biggest moments of his career, saying it was his first really important car. In a 2016 interview, he described the effect more personally: “It changed everything. It changed my life completely.” Both statements are Callum’s recollections, not an objective measure of the car’s importance.

JLR credits Callum with the DB7’s design at TWR. Its significance in his story is not simply that it is an admired Aston Martin, but that it established a recognizable design direction he would continue to develop across later Aston Martin projects.

How Callum described Aston Martin and Jaguar design

Callum said the two marques shared underlying concerns, including how a car sits and its overall proportions, but expressed those values differently. In a 2010 Car and Driver interview, he put the contrast this way: “Jaguars are much more voluptuous; Aston Martins are more muscular—strength in a tailored suit.” It is his characterization of the brands, not a universal rule for every model.

Aston Martin: muscular, tailored forms

The DB7 and Vanquish show the Aston Martin side of that distinction. Callum also explained the visual continuity he saw between the Vanquish and DB9 with a memorable line: “You only have to look at the DB9 to see who designed it—it’s a Vanquish with a dinner jacket on.” The quotation captures his view of their relationship; it should not be taken to mean the models were identical or that he alone created every element.

Callum’s own account of his DB9 contribution was unusually specific. In 2010, he said he had done “pretty much 100 percent, including the interior,” and estimated a “good 80 percent” of the V8 Vantage. These are his retrospective estimates of his personal design involvement, rather than independently verified shares of authorship.

Jaguar: a new direction across a range

At Jaguar, Callum’s leadership encompassed the XK, XF and XJ, with the F-Type among the models that represented the marque’s design direction. The XF was a career milestone: in Autocar’s 2019 profile, Callum said it was one of his biggest moments because it “led to so much more.” JLR’s project list and Autocar’s retrospective also place the XE, second-generation XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and I-Pace within the wider Jaguar-era portfolio created under his leadership.

Why the C-X75 was never produced

The Jaguar C-X75 belongs in a discussion of Callum’s most striking work, but with an important distinction: it was a concept, not a production car. JLR says it attracted attention at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Callum later said five prototypes were made, but the project did not reach production.

In a 2019 interview, Callum cited the car’s projected price of £1 million and the difficulty of building such a low-volume vehicle inside a mass-production company. He also said, “I regret we didn’t put the C-X75 into production, and always will.” Those details are his account of the project’s economics and outcome.

What makes these cars stand out?

There is no authoritative survey or ranking establishing which cars are objectively the prettiest. A more useful way to judge Callum’s portfolio is to consider what each car represents: the DB7 as a breakthrough, the Vanquish and DB9 as related but distinct expressions of Aston Martin, Jaguar’s XF as a pivotal design direction, and the C-X75 as an ambitious concept that never reached showrooms. The F-Type offers another compelling production-car expression of the Jaguar character Callum described.

That variety is the strongest case for the title’s subjective claim. Callum’s reputation rests not on a single silhouette or a numerical beauty score, but on work that helped shape two marques while giving each a different visual voice.
