After a week in a Canadian-market Santa Fe, I came away impressed by its stable ride, roomy cabin and useful details—but less impressed by the hybrid’s punch, the gas model’s transmission behavior and the touch-sensitive climate controls. Your best choice depends heavily on powertrain, drivetrain and seating configuration.
The Santa Fe I drove
My week-long test was a Canadian-market 2024 Santa Fe. Hyundai rearranged the Canadian lineup and pricing for 2024, so its trim names and equipment should not be mapped directly onto U.S. versions. The redesigned SUV has a squared-off body, a broad liftgate and three-row seating. U.S. models can seat six or seven depending on trim and seat configuration.

For U.S. buyers, the gas Santa Fe uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated by Hyundai at 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimates on Hyundai’s specification page are 20/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined for most front-wheel-drive versions, 20/28/23 for most all-wheel-drive versions and 19/25/21 for the XRT AWD. Those are official estimates, not what I recorded during a week in the Canadian vehicle.
Hyundai lists 152 cubic feet of passenger volume. Roof rails are standard on several U.S. configurations but absent on at least one base configuration, so verify the exact build before ordering crossbars.

What I loved after a week
A genuinely comfortable, settled ride
The Santa Fe felt stable and comfortable over a full week of ordinary driving. Its ride quality was one of the strongest parts of the vehicle, and the upright shape made the cabin feel open rather than cramped. Long-distance comfort is helped by the high seating position, good outward visibility and a calm chassis.
Visibility and everyday practicality
The squared-off exterior is more than styling. The upright rear and broad liftgate make it easier to judge the vehicle’s corners and load bulky items. Storage spaces throughout the cabin and a family-useful layout made routine errands less frustrating than in many swoopy three-row SUVs.
A roomy, premium-feeling cabin in upper trims
The dual-screen dashboard and upscale materials give higher trims a near-luxury ambience. Controls and storage are arranged with passengers in mind, and the cabin’s width means adults in the first two rows have room to settle in without rubbing shoulders.

Flexible cargo carrying
Official U.S. capacities show how the layout works: 14.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 40.5 behind the second row and 79.6 with both rear rows folded, according to Hyundai USA’s specifications. The flat-sided body and large opening make those numbers useful in practice. With all three rows occupied, however, the remaining luggage area is suitable for soft bags and groceries rather than a family’s full vacation load.
What I hated—or at least would change
The hybrid is efficient-minded, not quick
The Canadian-market hybrid returned decent fuel economy, but its power delivery felt merely adequate. If you regularly merge with a full cabin or climb steep grades, drive both powertrains before deciding. The hybrid’s advantage is efficiency and smooth, relaxed operation—not strong acceleration.
The gas version’s transmission can hesitate
The gas model has the stronger performance character, yet its transmission sometimes hesitated during everyday throttle changes. That behavior can make low-speed driving feel less polished than the rest of the vehicle.

Steering that does not tell you much
The steering is easy to operate and appropriate for commuting, but it provides little road feedback. Drivers who enjoy a more communicative connection through corners may find it numb.

Touch-sensitive climate controls
The climate interface looks clean, but touch-sensitive controls are less satisfying than physical knobs or buttons when you are making a quick adjustment while moving. This is a small issue that becomes noticeable every day.
Some styling and wheel choices are divisive
MotorWeek praised the assertive design and broad cargo opening but criticized aspects of the rear styling. Its staff also disliked the Calligraphy’s 21-inch wheels. Large wheels can sharpen the appearance while increasing tire cost and potentially reducing ride compliance, so consider the wheel package rather than choosing solely by trim.

Is the third row actually usable?
Yes, with the right expectations. The third row adds occasional-seat flexibility and works best for children or shorter adults. It is not a substitute for a full-size SUV’s generous rearmost seating. Because only 14.6 cubic feet remains behind it, using all three rows requires disciplined packing.
Gas or hybrid: which Santa Fe should you choose?

These figures are configuration-specific EPA estimates. Hyundai publishes separate specifications for the hybrid, so do not apply the gas ratings or turbo output to it.

MotorWeek’s tested AWD turbo Santa Fe reached 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, covered the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds at 95 mph, stopped from 60 mph in an average 111 feet and averaged 22.6 mpg on regular fuel. Those are MotorWeek’s test results, not my week-long observations.

Recalls and ownership checks
Check any 2024 Santa Fe by VIN before buying or taking delivery. Hyundai Recall 263 covers certain vehicles for a transmission-control-module software update and dealer dual-clutch-transmission inspection; damaged transmissions are replaced. Hyundai advises using the electronic parking brake until the inspection is complete because of a potential rollaway risk.
Recall 258 concerns a rear-camera image that can be obstructed by a trailer parking-assist message in reverse and has a software remedy. Neither recall necessarily affects every 2024 Santa Fe; campaign status and remedy completion are VIN-specific.
Safety and carrying accessories
IIHS lists the 2024 Santa Fe’s small-overlap front tests as Good and the updated side test as Good overall, while some individual side-test injury measures are Acceptable or Marginal. That is a nuanced result, not a single blanket safety grade. See the IIHS rating details.
If you need to carry bikes, skis or a roof box, 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe roof rack crossbars are available. Edmunds lists crossbars for the model, and Hyundai lists roof rails on selected trims; confirm rail presence, year and fitment for your exact vehicle before purchasing. Edmunds’ equipment listing is a starting point.
My verdict
The 2024 Santa Fe succeeds as a comfortable, unusually practical three-row crossover. I loved its ride, visibility, storage and family-oriented cabin. I disliked the hybrid’s limited punch, the gas transmission’s hesitation, vague steering and touch-heavy climate controls. Choose the hybrid for efficiency and the gas turbo for stronger performance, then verify the exact trim, seating layout, wheel size and recall status rather than assuming every Santa Fe is equipped the same way.
