Hyundai recalled certain 2026 Palisade and Palisade Hybrid Limited and Calligraphy models after reporting a fatality potentially involving a third-row seat assembly. The recall, NHTSA campaign 26V160 and Hyundai campaign 296, covers 61,093 vehicles. Its power second- and third-row seats may fail to detect a person and continue moving after contact. Owners should check their vehicle by VIN and confirm that the software remedy is complete.
What happened in the fatality report?
Hyundai’s recall filing says its North America Safety Office received a report on March 9, 2026, of a fatality potentially involving the third-row seat assembly in Ohio. Hyundai said it had not yet determined the root cause, mechanism, or full details of the individual case. Its North America Safety Decision Authority decided on March 12 to recall affected 2026 Palisade vehicles in the United States. At that point, Hyundai reported one potentially related fatality and seven third-row field claims. NHTSA’s recall acknowledgment and Hyundai’s filing provide the official recall information.
Edmunds reported on March 16, 2026, that the incident occurred March 7 and that the child was two years old. Those details are from contemporaneous news reporting; Hyundai’s filing describes the fatality as potentially involving the condition and says the case details were not yet understood. Edmunds’ report quoted Hyundai as saying the incident remained under investigation.
Which Palisade models are recalled?
The recall applies to certain model-year 2026 Hyundai Palisade and Palisade Hybrid vehicles with Limited or Calligraphy trim packages. NHTSA lists 61,093 potentially affected vehicles under campaign 26V160; Hyundai’s campaign number is 296. The population in Hyundai’s Part 573 report consists of 20,364 Palisade Hybrid vehicles and 40,729 Palisade vehicles, assembled in South Korea for sale in the United States and Canada. Trim and model year alone cannot confirm whether a specific vehicle is covered. Check the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup resources or Hyundai, then ask Hyundai to confirm whether the recall applies and whether the remedy is recorded as complete. NHTSA said involved VINs would be searchable from March 19, 2026.
What is the power-seat defect?
NHTSA’s acknowledgment states: “The second and third row power seats may fail to detect a person.” During powered functions—including one-touch tilt-and-slide or automatic power fold-and-stow—the seat may continue moving after contacting someone. The agency warns that a person, especially a child, could become trapped, increasing the risk of injury. The recall letter describes the issue as “Power Rear Seats May Trap a Person.”

Hyundai’s report also advised owners to avoid contacting the second-row one-touch tilt-and-slide button while entering or exiting the third row and to prevent inadvertent activation. Until the recall remedy is confirmed complete, use caution with second- and third-row power-seat functions and keep children away from the rear seating area during power-folding operation, as NHTSA advised.

Is the Hyundai Palisade recall fixed?
The remedy status changed after the initial recall filing. On March 19, NHTSA described the remedy as under development and an interim free software update. Hyundai’s filing described an over-the-air update for eligible enrolled owners or an in-person update, at no charge. Those were the statuses at filing, not confirmation of any individual vehicle’s current status.
Cars.com reported on April 14, 2026, that the stop-sale had ended and a permanent software fix was available at no additional cost through a Hyundai dealer or, for eligible owners with an active Bluelink subscription, over the air. According to that report, the update changes seat operation: the liftgate must be open for fold-flat operation, central touchscreen folding and stowing controls are disabled, switches require press-and-hold operation, and occupant/object detection logic is improved. The available reports do not establish whether a particular vehicle or dealer vehicle still has an open recall today. The supported remedy routes are an eligible over-the-air update or a dealer visit; the cited reporting does not establish a difference in effectiveness between them.
