Hyundai has announced a new compact SUV designed and localised in India, but the company has not yet published a complete retail specification for the electric model reported as project HE1i. Its launch timing is also unsettled: reports cite both a debut by the end of 2026 and a target by March 2027. Price, battery size, certified range and final name remain unconfirmed.
When could the Hyundai HE1i launch in India?
There is no confirmed launch date. Autocar India reported on 27 August 2026 that Hyundai’s new compact electric SUV was targeted to debut by March 2027. In a later report dated 3 September 2026, the publication said Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg indicated it could debut by the end of 2026. What is reported about the HE1i?
Autocar India reports that HE1i is a born-electric compact SUV based on Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) platform, also used by the overseas Hyundai Inster, and that production is planned at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu. The reported Svolt-to-Exide sequence is a supply plan, not a settled specification or guarantee of when locally produced cells would be used. The same report says Exide supply timing had been delayed. Autocar India.
What are the price, range and charging details?
No confirmed HE1i price, battery size, certified driving range or charging rate is available in the cited material. Although the report describes standard- and long-range versions, it does not give their capacities or distances. The overseas Inster’s battery and range figures should not be treated as HE1i specifications: a shared platform does not establish identical batteries, tuning or certification.

Which cars could it compete with?
Autocar India has named the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV as expected rivals, and its later report also mentions the Kia Syros EV. These are press comparisons rather than confirmed positioning from Hyundai. A meaningful comparison will need the HE1i’s published price, certified and real-world range, charging capability, cabin space, safety equipment, warranty and delivery timing alongside the competing models’ corresponding details. What should buyers take from the announcement?
The announcement confirms Hyundai’s India-designed and localised compact-SUV direction, while the HE1i identity, launch window and product details remain subject to reporting rather than a complete retail announcement. Buyers deciding whether to wait should avoid basing a purchase on assumed range, price or equipment. Until Hyundai releases those details, the practical comparison with vehicles already on sale cannot be completed.
