Hyundai Elantra Generations: Every U.S. Model Year from 1992 to 2026

The Hyundai Elantra spans seven generations from the J1 through CN7. Here are the U.S. model years, generation codes, global-market caveats, body-style differences, recall guidance, and parts-fitment tips from 1992 through the verified 2026 model year.

The Hyundai Elantra has seven major generations. Hyundai’s global history starts with the J1 in 1990, but the first U.S. model year was 1992. For U.S. readers, the generations run J1 (1992–1995), J2/RD (1996–2000), XD (2001–2006), HD (2007–2010), MD (2011–2016), AD (2017–2020), and CN7 (2021–2026).

The year ranges are a U.S.-focused guide, not a worldwide production chart. Hyundai has also sold the car as the Avante or, in some earlier markets, the Lantra, and body styles, engines, trims, and launch timing vary by country. For parts, recalls, or repairs, always add the VIN, body style, engine, transmission, trim, and market to the generation and model year.

The seven Hyundai Elantra generations at a glance

Hyundai’s global Elantra history begins with the first-generation J1 in 1990, but the first U.S. model year was 1992. For U.S. shoppers, owners, and parts buyers, the most useful breakdown is seven generations covering the 1992–2026 model years:

Generation Common code U.S. model years What distinguishes it
First J1 1992–1995 The original Elantra generation, introduced globally in 1990.
Second J2/RD 1996–2000 Expanded global presence; wagon versions existed in some markets.
Third XD 2001–2006 A substantial early-2000s redesign and a broader consumer presence.
Fourth HD 2007–2010 A new design with continuing safety and efficiency development.
Fifth MD 2011–2016 A major redesign associated with the Elantra’s strong early-2010s visibility.
Sixth AD 2017–2020 A more restrained design and updated technology.
Seventh CN7 2021–2026 A longer, lower redesign with hybrid, N Line, and N derivatives in the broader lineup.

These are U.S.-oriented model-year groupings, not a universal global production chart. Hyundai uses the Avante name in Korea and used Lantra in some earlier markets. Global launch dates, body styles, engines, trim names, and production years can differ from the U.S. schedule.

First generation: J1 — U.S. model years 1992–1995

The J1 was the original Elantra generation. Hyundai dates the nameplate’s global inception to 1990, which is why some history pages refer to the Elantra as beginning in 1990. That does not make 1990 a U.S. Elantra model year; the U.S. model-year grouping begins in 1992.

The J1 established the Elantra as a compact sedan and is now mainly relevant to collectors, restoration projects, historical research, and owners maintaining an unusually old Hyundai. Original-market equipment and parts can be difficult to match, so the VIN, body style, market, and production date matter more than the word Elantra on its own.

Second generation: J2/RD — U.S. model years 1996–2000

The second-generation Elantra is commonly identified by the J2 or RD code. Hyundai Motor Group places the second-generation Avante/Elantra introduction in 1995, while the U.S. model-year presentation generally starts at 1996.

This generation expanded Hyundai’s global presence and was sold in more than one body style in some markets, including wagon forms. Those non-U.S. versions should not be assumed to share U.S. sedan body panels, lighting, suspension components, or interior parts. When searching catalogs, pair J2/RD with the country, model year, body style, and engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Third generation: XD — U.S. model years 2001–2006

The XD arrived around the beginning of the new millennium and brought a substantial design overhaul. It is one of the more recognizable early-2000s Elantra boundaries in U.S. parts catalogs and repair references.

Parts and service sources may use labels such as XD, XD2, facelift, or a market-specific production designation. Those labels are not sufficient by themselves. Confirm the model year, sedan or other body style, engine, transmission, and market before ordering mechanical, electrical, lighting, or body parts.

Fourth generation: HD — U.S. model years 2007–2010

The HD generation followed the XD in Hyundai’s chronology. Independent U.S. model-year references generally place the U.S. sedan from 2007 through 2010, although global production schedules and related body styles can run differently at the edges.

For owners, HD is an important fitment boundary. A component advertised for a 2001–2006 XD should not automatically be treated as suitable for a 2007–2010 HD. The distinction is especially important for body parts, headlights and taillights, suspension components, interior accessories, and repair-manual coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fifth generation: MD — U.S. model years 2011–2016

Hyundai introduced the MD generation in 2010, but the U.S. model-year range begins with 2011. The redesign brought a major change in styling and was promoted around fuel efficiency and value. The generation also received the 2012 North American Car of the Year recognition.

Do not treat every MD-badged or MD-era vehicle as the same car for parts purposes. The regular Elantra sedan must be separated from derivatives such as the Elantra Coupe and Elantra Touring. Body panels, glass, lighting, interior pieces, suspension parts, exhaust components, and some service information can differ even when the vehicles share the Elantra name.

Sixth generation: AD — U.S. model years 2017–2020

Hyundai Motor Group dates the AD generation to 2015, while U.S. model-year references generally organize the sedan as 2017–2020. Compared with the later CN7, the AD has a more restrained exterior design and represents the final conventional U.S. Elantra generation before the dramatic 2021 redesign.

For a used-car comparison, the AD is the generation to examine when you want a relatively modern compact sedan without moving to the CN7’s longer, lower styling or its broader hybrid and performance-derivative lineup. Actual equipment still depends on year, trim, engine, transmission, and market.

Seventh generation: CN7 — U.S. model years 2021–2026

Hyundai identifies the 2021 Elantra as the seventh-generation model. The CN7 uses a longer, lower design direction that Hyundai calls Parametric Dynamics. It also broadened the nameplate’s lineup with hybrid and N Line versions, while the higher-performance Elantra N followed in 2021.

The CN7 is not one single powertrain or trim. In Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. specifications, regular Elantra variants use a 2.0-liter inline-four rated at 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, while the listed N Line configuration uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine rated at 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft. Those figures are specific to the cited model year and configurations; they should not be used as specifications for every CN7, every hybrid, or the Elantra N.

Hyundai’s history of the 2021 model also highlights technology such as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Availability can depend on trim and market, so verify the equipment on the exact vehicle rather than assuming that every 2021–2026 Elantra has the same infotainment features.

Hyundai USA currently lists a 2026 Elantra, making 2026 the latest verified U.S. model year covered here. A current listing does not make 2026 specifications applicable to earlier CN7 cars, and it does not establish that the same model year or trim is sold in every country.

Why the name Elantra is not enough for parts research

Across seven generations, the Elantra name has covered substantially different vehicles. Earlier markets included body styles beyond the sedan, and later lineups included or supported derivatives such as the Coupe, Touring, GT, Hybrid, N Line, and N, depending on the market and year.

A listing that says simply Elantra may combine several generations or exclude a body-style derivative. The correct model year is a starting point, not a guarantee of fitment.

How to check recalls before buying or repairing one

Recall status must be checked against the individual vehicle. The NHTSA recall lookup can return general results by year, make, and model, but a VIN search is the more important step because it identifies unrepaired recalls associated with that specific vehicle. Also check Hyundai’s official recall resources or ask an authorized Hyundai dealer to verify the VIN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several NHTSA records illustrate why generation-wide conclusions are unsafe:

  • A 2023 NHTSA consumer alert covered certain 2011–2015 Elantras and 2013–2015 Elantra Coupes in a Hyundai park-outside fire-risk recall campaign. The alert did not mean that every vehicle in those model-year ranges was affected.
  • NHTSA recall 22V-354 involved certain 2021–2023 Elantras and 2021–2022 Elantra Hybrids and concerned front seat-belt pretensioners.
  • NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA21-003, opened in 2022, concerned allegations of engine-compartment fires involving certain 2013 Elantras and previously recalled vehicles. An engineering investigation is a record of an agency review, not proof that every 2013 Elantra has the alleged defect.

Production dates, VIN eligibility, prior repairs, and recall completion can change the answer for two otherwise similar cars. Open recalls should be addressed by an authorized dealer where applicable. A generic model-year search is not a substitute for a VIN check, and an OBD-II scan cannot confirm that a safety recall has been completed.

A practical used-Elantra buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Photograph the VIN, read the door-jamb label, confirm the title and model year, and establish whether it is a sedan, Coupe, Touring, GT, Hybrid, N Line, or N.
  2. Run the VIN through recall databases. Save the results and ask who will complete any open campaign before the sale or repair.
  3. Match service information to the car. Choose a manual and parts catalog by year, engine, body style, and market. Do not rely on a broad generation label when a catalog provides a more specific application.
  4. Inspect condition independently. Look for accident repairs, corrosion, fluid leaks, warning lights, uneven tire wear, damaged wiring, and incomplete service records. A pre-purchase inspection is especially valuable on older J1 through HD cars, but it cannot replace a VIN recall lookup.
  5. Scan for diagnostic codes if appropriate. A basic OBD-II diagnostic scanner can help identify stored or pending powertrain codes during a used-car inspection. It will not prove that a vehicle is mechanically sound, clear a safety recall, or replace professional diagnosis.
  6. Price the actual configuration. Condition, mileage, trim, powertrain, geography, ownership history, and recall status can matter more than the generation name when comparing used cars.

Choosing information and maintenance products by generation

The most useful physical product for an owner researching repairs is a Hyundai Elantra repair manual. A manual can help with maintenance procedures, wiring information, specifications, troubleshooting, and restoration planning, but it will normally cover a limited model-year range. Select one that explicitly matches the vehicle’s generation, engine, body style, and market; no single manual should be assumed to cover every Elantra from 1992 through 2026.

Routine products also require exact fitment:

  • Cabin and engine air filters: verify the year, engine, trim, and manufacturer application rather than buying by nameplate alone.
  • Wiper blades: confirm the correct lengths and attachment types for the specific year and body style.
  • Floor mats and cargo liners: choose custom-fit pieces for the correct generation and body configuration; sedan, hatchback, Touring, GT, and other derivatives may not share floor shapes.
  • Replacement parts: use VIN-based or vehicle-specific catalogs for brakes, suspension, lighting, sensors, body panels, and electrical components.

For older cars, a part that fits the generation may still require an engine, transmission, facelift, or production-date qualifier. For CN7 cars, separate regular, Hybrid, N Line, and N applications where the catalog does so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Elantra generation is relevant to you?

Your goal Generations to research first Important qualification
Historical ownership or restoration J1 and J2/RD Expect market-specific equipment and harder-to-find original parts.
Early-2000s Elantra research XD Check whether a catalog means XD, XD2, facelift, or another market designation.
Older U.S. compact sedan comparison XD and HD Keep 2001–2006 XD parts separate from 2007–2010 HD parts.
2010s redesign and derivatives MD Separate the sedan from Coupe and Touring versions.
Modern conventional compact sedan AD U.S. sedan model years are generally 2017–2020.
Newest design, hybrid, or sporty variants CN7 Verify whether the car is regular, Hybrid, N Line, or N and check the exact year and trim.

This framework identifies where to begin research; it is not a blanket reliability or safety ranking. A well-maintained older car and a neglected newer car can have very different ownership prospects, and recall status must always be verified by VIN.

Bottom line

The Hyundai Elantra has seven major generations: J1, J2/RD, XD, HD, MD, AD, and CN7. Its global history starts in 1990, while the U.S. model-year sequence begins in 1992 and reaches the currently verified 2026 model year. The safest way to research any Elantra is to combine the generation and model year with the VIN, body style, engine, transmission, trim, and market before checking recalls, ordering parts, or choosing a repair guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was 1990 the first U.S. Hyundai Elantra model year?

Hyundai’s global Elantra history begins in 1990, but the first U.S. model year was 1992. Do not use 1990 as the U.S. model year when searching for parts or service information.

What generation is a 2011–2016 Hyundai Elantra?

The 2011–2016 U.S. Elantra belongs to the fifth generation, commonly identified by the MD code. The Elantra Coupe and Elantra Touring are separate body-style applications and should not automatically be treated as interchangeable with the sedan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What generation is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

The 2021–2026 U.S. Elantra belongs to the seventh generation, commonly identified as CN7. The generation includes different regular, Hybrid, N Line, and N configurations, so engine and equipment vary by year and trim.

How do I check recalls on a Hyundai Elantra?

Search the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and verify the result with Hyundai or an authorized dealer. Year, make, and model searches provide general information, while the VIN identifies unrepaired recalls associated with a particular vehicle.

Will one Hyundai Elantra repair manual cover every model year?

No. A repair manual is normally limited by model-year range, engine, body style, and market. Choose a manual that explicitly matches the vehicle rather than assuming one guide covers all Elantras from 1992 through 2026.

The Bottom Line

In short: 1990 was the global launch, 1992 was the first U.S. model year, and the Elantra now spans seven generations through the verified 2026 U.S. model year. Use the generation table for orientation, but use the VIN and exact vehicle configuration for recalls, parts, manuals, and purchase decisions.
