BMW has six principal M3 generations: E30, E36, E46, E9x, F80 and G80. The G81 M3 Touring is the G80 family’s wagon derivative and the first production M3 Touring, not a separate seventh generation. The key naming trap is the F generation: F80 is the M3 sedan, while the coupe and convertible became the F82 and F83 M4.

BMW M3 model-year map

The chassis code is the safest way to identify an M3 generation. U.S. model years do not always match global production dates, and body-style availability varied by market.

Generation Approximate global production era Common U.S. model years Body styles and engine identity Important naming note
E30 1986–1991 1988–1991 Specialized two-door M3 derivative; high-revving four-cylinder The original homologation M3; not every E30 3 Series was an M3
E36 1992–1999 1995–1999 Coupe, sedan and convertible in relevant markets; naturally aspirated straight-six A broader, more usable road car than the E30
E46 2000–2006 2001–2006 Coupe and convertible; naturally aspirated inline-six Special editions and competition versions remain E46 M3s, not new generations
E90/E92/E93 2007–2013 2008–2013 Sedan, coupe and convertible; naturally aspirated V8 The only production M3 generation with a V8
F80 2014–2018 2015–2018 Sedan; turbocharged inline-six The coupe and convertible became the F82/F83 M4
G80 2020/2021–present 2021–2026 and current Sedan; turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six Current M3 sedan generation
G81 2022–present Market dependent Touring wagon; G80-family M3 First production M3 Touring, but not a separate seventh generation

Model-year caution: these are generation-level guide dates, not a substitute for checking a vehicle identification number, build date, market specification or registration record. A car built late in one calendar year can be sold as the following model year.

How many BMW M3 generations are there?

BMW’s principal road-car history contains six M3 generations: E30, E36, E46, E9x, F80 and G80. The E9x label covers three body codes—E90 sedan, E92 coupe and E93 convertible—so those are one generation, not three. The G81 M3 Touring is a major new body-style milestone within the G80 family, not a separate generation.

The apparent gap in the F-generation timeline is also intentional. BMW continued to call the sedan an M3, but renamed the related coupe and convertible the M4. Therefore, an all-M3 guide should include the F80 sedan and explain why there is no F80 M3 coupe.

E30 M3: the homologation original

Approximate production era: 1986–1991 globally; commonly 1988–1991 in the United States.

The E30 created the M3 formula. BMW developed it around touring-car homologation requirements, so it was not merely an ordinary E30 3 Series with a more powerful engine and cosmetic upgrades. Competition requirements influenced its bodywork, engine, suspension and production strategy, giving the road car a direct motorsport purpose.

That distinction matters when researching an E30. “E30” identifies the broader 3 Series generation; “E30 M3” identifies a specialized performance derivative produced in specific markets and years. An E30 325i, 318i or other regular 3 Series is not an M3 simply because it shares the chassis family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The E30 M3 was primarily known as a two-door performance car, with market-specific body-style and edition differences. Production variants and limited editions belong to the E30 generation rather than creating additional M3 generations. Registration dates can also vary by country, so a precise listing should state both the E30 code and the market.

Why it matters: the E30 is the car that established the M3 as a road-legal performance model engineered with competition in mind.

E36 M3: the straight-six becomes more usable

Approximate production era: 1992–1999 globally; commonly 1995–1999 in the United States.

The E36 represented a conceptual change. BMW M describes it as less centered on racing homologation and more focused on everyday usability. Its high-revving straight-six character became one of the defining traits of the generation.

The M3 also became easier to use as a conventional road car. Coupe, sedan and convertible versions were offered in relevant markets, but those body styles and their engine specifications should not be assumed to have been identical worldwide. North American cars, European cars and right-hand-drive markets can differ in equipment, output, transmissions and availability.

For a model-year search, the E36 therefore needs two labels: the generation code and the market. A global history normally begins with 1992, while a U.S. buyer will generally be looking at 1995–1999 model years.

Why it matters: the E36 broadened the M3 from a competition-influenced special into a more practical performance car without abandoning the high-revving six-cylinder identity.

E46 M3: the mature naturally aspirated benchmark

Approximate production era: 2000–2006 globally; commonly 2001–2006 in the United States.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The E46 continued the established formula with a more developed and stiffer platform and a naturally aspirated inline-six. It is the generation that many histories use as the mature expression of the traditional M3 recipe: compact proportions, rear-drive performance, a high-revving engine and a road-car layout that remained usable outside a racetrack.

The standard E46 M3 was sold primarily as a coupe and convertible. That is different from the E36, whose sedan availability was part of its broader body-style story. Market-specific packages and limited or competition-oriented derivatives—including versions such as the CSL and Competition Package in the markets where they were offered—should be cataloged under the E46 generation rather than counted as new generations.

When comparing listings, confirm whether a seller is describing a standard M3, a market-specific special edition or a competition package. The badge may remain “M3,” but equipment, body panels, suspension calibration and production numbers can be substantially different.

Why it matters: the E46 refined the naturally aspirated, inline-six M3 concept before BMW made its most dramatic engine change.

E90, E92 and E93 M3: the unique V8 era

Approximate production era: 2007–2013 globally; commonly 2008–2013 in the United States.

The E9x generation is the only production M3 generation BMW M identifies as using a V8. That makes it a crucial dividing line in the model’s history: it retained a naturally aspirated, high-revving approach while moving further toward the electronic systems, comfort equipment and luxury content expected of a modern performance car.

The chassis codes identify the body style:

  • E90: M3 sedan
  • E92: M3 coupe
  • E93: M3 convertible

All three are M3s for this generation. The M4 naming convention had not yet arrived, so calling an E92 or E93 an M4 is historically incorrect. Conversely, calling the whole generation only “E90 M3” can be misleading if the subject includes the coupe and convertible; E9x M3 is the useful umbrella term.

As with earlier generations, special editions and track-focused derivatives should be separated from the regular production timeline without being mistaken for a new generation. A listing should identify the exact chassis, body style, market and edition.

Why it matters: the E9x M3 is the one-off V8 chapter in the production car’s history and the last naturally aspirated M3 generation.

F80 M3: turbocharging and the M4 split

Approximate production era: 2014–2018 globally; commonly 2015–2018 in the United States.

The F80 is the sedan M3 of the era associated with the F30-generation 3 Series. Its defining technical change was the move to a turbocharged inline-six. Its defining naming change was just as important: BMW separated the two-door and convertible models into the M4 family.

That produces the following relationship:

  • F80: M3 sedan
  • F82: M4 coupe
  • F83: M4 convertible

There was no missing F80 coupe. BMW changed the badge. An “all M3 model years” timeline that jumps from the E92 coupe to the F80 sedan is reflecting BMW’s naming strategy, not omitting a body style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Competition, CS and other special versions remain derivatives of the F80 generation. They can be important when comparing specifications or collecting cars, but they should not be added to the generation count.

Why it matters: the F80 ended the naturally aspirated era, introduced turbocharging to the M3 sedan and established the M3/M4 split that continues in BMW’s naming structure.

G80 M3: the current sedan generation

Production/model-year era: launched for the current generation in the 2020/2021 period; U.S. model years begin with 2021 and extend through the current 2026 model year.

For the 2026 U.S. model year, BMW USA lists the M3 Sedan, M3 Competition Sedan and M3 Competition xDrive Sedan. The published U.S. lineup lists 473 hp for the M3 Sedan and 503 hp for the M3 Competition Sedan; the Competition xDrive model is listed separately. Those figures describe the dated 2026 U.S. lineup and should not be copied into an undated history as though they apply to every G80 in every country.

Model-year equipment, packages, software, drivetrain availability and pricing can change during the G80’s run. For a current purchase or comparison, check the BMW page for the relevant country and model year rather than relying on a generic “G80 M3” specification.

Why it matters: the G80 brings the M3 into its current turbocharged, highly configurable era while preserving the sedan name after the coupe moved to the M4 line.

G81 M3 Touring: the first production M3 wagon

Production era: introduced as a production model in 2022; market availability and model-year labeling vary.

The G81 is the Touring, or wagon, derivative of the G80-family M3. BMW M identifies it as the first production M3 Touring, making it one of the most significant body-style additions in the model’s history. It should be included in an all-generations article, but counted as a G80-family derivative rather than a separate seventh generation.

The initial M3 Competition Touring used standard M xDrive. BMW later documented a 530-hp version and the M3 CS Touring, introduced in 2024 in BMW’s historical material. Outputs, trims and sales availability are market- and date-dependent, so a Touring listing should be checked against the country-specific specification rather than generalized across all G81 cars.

Earlier Touring-related concepts, prototypes and factory projects may be historically interesting, but they do not turn those cars into production M3 model years. The production G81 begins with the 2022 introduction.

Why it matters: the G81 proves that the M3 name can extend beyond sedan, coupe and convertible formats without becoming a separate generation.

What is not a separate M3 generation?

A generation is identified by the underlying chassis and vehicle program, not by every trim, body code or limited-edition badge. These distinctions prevent several common errors:

  • E90, E92 and E93 are one E9x generation. The codes identify sedan, coupe and convertible body styles.
  • F80, F82 and F83 are not all M3s. F80 is the M3 sedan; F82 and F83 are the M4 coupe and convertible.
  • G81 is not a seventh generation. It is the G80-family M3 Touring.
  • Competition, CS, CSL, GTS and other limited editions are derivatives. They may have different engines, bodywork, suspension, equipment or production numbers, but they remain within their underlying generation.
  • Race cars are not road-car model years. A competition car can share an M3 name or family connection without being a street-legal production model.

Road cars versus race cars and special projects

The M3 name has always had a motorsport connection, beginning with the E30 homologation car. That does not mean every M3-branded competition project belongs in a road-car model-year table.

BMW M separately documents the M3 Touring 24H as a competition car for the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours. It should not be presented as a normal G81 road car, a regular 2026 M3 model year or proof that every G81 specification is street-legal. Concepts, prototypes and factory projects should likewise be labeled clearly and kept separate from production generations.

A practical way to identify an M3 by year

  1. Start with the chassis code. Look for E30, E36, E46, E90/E92/E93, F80 or G80/G81 rather than relying only on the registration year.
  2. Identify the body style. This is essential for the E9x generation and for separating the F80 M3 from the F82/F83 M4.
  3. Confirm the market. A 1992 global E36 and a 1995 U.S. E36 can both be correctly labeled, but they are not the same market-year reference.
  4. Check the build date and VIN. A transition-year car may be produced under one calendar-year schedule and sold or registered as another model year.
  5. Separate the base car from the edition. Competition, CS, CSL and similar labels describe variants within a generation.
  6. Confirm that it is a road car. Race cars, concepts and prototypes should not be added to a production M3 timeline.

The most direct physical product match for this history is the BMW M3 E30 model kit. LEGO’s official U.S. product information identifies Speed Champions set 77263 as a 358-piece BMW M3 E30 building kit, while BMW Group documents the companies’ co-created project and August 1, 2026 release information. It represents the E30 only—not all six M3 generations—so it is best treated as an E30 display or building piece rather than a complete M3 collection.

For collectors who prefer finished models, BMW-operated Lifestyle shops document generation-specific 1:18 miniatures, including an E30 M3 miniature and a G80 M3 miniature listed through the BMW UK shop. The exact retailer, market, stock status and scale should be verified before ordering; an official miniature available in the United Kingdom may not be offered through the same storefront in the United States.

A BMW 3 Series repair manual can also be useful for maintenance research, but it is not automatically appropriate for an M3. Before buying one, check its covered years, engines, body styles, drivetrain, market and whether it specifically includes the M3 rather than only standard 3 Series models. A generic “3 Series” title is not enough evidence of M3 coverage.

Quick reference: the six-generation story

  • E30: homologation created the M3 name.
  • E36: the concept broadened into a more usable road car and established the straight-six identity.
  • E46: the naturally aspirated inline-six formula reached a mature form.
  • E9x: the sedan, coupe and convertible shared the only production M3 V8 era.
  • F80: turbocharging arrived and the coupe and convertible became M4s.
  • G80/G81: the current turbocharged sedan family expanded to include the first production M3 Touring.

What years was the E30 M3 sold in the United States?

The first-generation E30 M3 was sold in the United States most commonly for the 1988 through 1991 model years. Global production and registration dates can differ, so the chassis code and market should be confirmed for an individual car.

Is the E92 an M3 or an M4?

No. The E92 is the M3 coupe and the E93 is the M3 convertible within the E9x generation. BMW began using the M4 name for the related coupe and convertible in the next generation, where F80 means M3 sedan and F82/F83 mean M4 coupe/convertible.

Is the G81 a seventh-generation BMW M3?

The G81 is the Touring wagon version of the G80-family M3. BMW introduced it as the first production M3 Touring in 2022, but it is classified as a G80-family derivative rather than a new generation. Availability varies by country.

What BMW M3 models are current for 2026?

For the 2026 U.S. model year, BMW USA lists the M3 Sedan, M3 Competition Sedan and M3 Competition xDrive Sedan. It lists 473 hp for the M3 Sedan and 503 hp for the M3 Competition Sedan. Current equipment and output should be verified for the exact market and model year.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BMW’s M3 lineage has six principal generations—E30, E36, E46, E9x, F80 and G80. The G81 Touring is a G80-family derivative, while the F82/F83 coupe and convertible are M4s rather than missing M3 variants. For any specific car, combine the chassis code with its body style, market, build date and edition.
