What THOR Industries announced in 2020
THOR announced Hymer USA after acquiring the European Erwin Hymer Group (EHG) in 2019. The acquisition excluded EHG’s former North American operations, making Hymer USA a newly proposed subsidiary rather than a continuation of the old North American organization.

The concept was intended to combine EHG’s European product knowledge with a U.S. workforce. German EHG employees with product-development and European manufacturing experience were expected to relocate to Bristol and work alongside local employees.
Troy James, then a THOR senior vice president, described the proposal as “a very different way of manufacturing not currently seen in the North American RV industry,” with automated processes used throughout design and assembly.

Why the planned launch was suspended
THOR’s later filing says COVID-19 “prohibited international travel” and prevented key employees needed for the startup from entering the United States. The company consequently suspended the Hymer USA plans while reevaluating the initiative’s structure and strategy. The filing also said THOR remained interested in a product line using European processes.
That filing explains why the fourth-quarter 2020 target cannot be treated as a completed launch. It does not, by itself, prove that the Bristol project was permanently canceled.
Did Hymer USA ever start building campers in Indiana?
The available official material does not confirm a Bristol production start, a restart after the COVID-era suspension or a formal cancellation. The defensible answer is therefore: announced in 2020, suspended during the pandemic, and not verified as an active Indiana manufacturing operation as of September 30, 2026.

Do not assume that a used vehicle advertised as “Hymer USA” was built in Bristol. Ask for the vehicle identification number, build location, certification documents and warranty paperwork, then confirm those details with an authorized Hymer or THOR representative.

Can you buy a European-designed Hymer camper in the United States?
Hymer’s help center states: “Vehicle orders are only possible through HYMER trading partners.” Buyers should therefore use an authorized trading partner or the official Hymer dealer search rather than expect factory-direct ordering or a general online marketplace listing.
Hymer’s current product site groups its vehicles into integrated motorhomes, semi-integrated motorhomes and camper vans. It also presents Hymer Original Parts as an official parts channel. Those product and parts channels do not establish that a current U.S.-specification vehicle is being built at Bristol.

If you are considering an imported European vehicle
A European-market Hymer may not meet U.S. requirements simply because it carries the Hymer name. Before paying a deposit, have the seller document:

- Warranty jurisdiction, exclusions and who performs warranty work
- Parts availability and service coverage for the specific chassis and appliances
- Payload after import equipment, fluids, passengers and accessories
- Shipping, duty, conversion, inspection and other landed costs
Get these answers in writing. A European specification, a U.S. dealer listing and a Bristol-built vehicle are three different claims.

How large is Hymer’s European business?
The parent group remains a major European RV manufacturer, but its published figures are not U.S. results and should not be used as evidence that Hymer USA is operating.

What to compare before choosing a Hymer or another camper
If you are comparing an imported European camper with a North American model, use the same checks for every candidate:
- Purchase channel: authorized trading partner, specialist importer or private sale
- Homologation: confirmed U.S. federal and state compliance
- Chassis and drivetrain: parts, diagnostics, fuel and service compatibility
- Layout and dimensions: bed, bathroom, storage and garage configuration for your use
- Insulation and climate capability: suitability for the temperatures and humidity you expect
- Service and parts network: practical access to chassis, body and appliance repairs
- Warranty jurisdiction: who pays and where claims can be performed
- Payload: remaining capacity once the vehicle is registered and equipped
- Total landed cost: purchase price plus transport, taxes, compliance work, registration and future service
Do not use an unverified Hymer USA price or specification in that comparison; no confirmed Bristol production specification is established.

What remains unknown about the Bristol facility
There is no official confirmation in the available material that THOR restarted production, converted the facility to another Hymer program or formally closed the initiative. Until THOR or Hymer publishes a newer status statement, claims that Hymer campers are currently manufactured in Bristol are unsubstantiated.
For a new vehicle, the practical route is an authorized HYMER trading partner. For an imported European vehicle, treat certification, registration, warranty and service support as questions to verify before purchase—not as assumptions based on the 2020 announcement.
