Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →As of October 4, 2026, the strongest manufacturer-backed hydrogen passenger-car options to watch are the Toyota Mirai, Honda CR-V e:FCEV, redesigned Hyundai NEXO and forthcoming BMW iX5 Hydrogen. That is four—not 15 verified current or announced cars. Availability is highly regional: the Mirai is marketed in the U.S., Honda identifies its fuel-cell CR-V as California-only, Hyundai announced the new NEXO for Japan, and BMW says its iX5 Hydrogen is planned for series production in 2028.
Hydrogen fuel-cell cars are electric-drive vehicles that make electricity onboard from hydrogen. They still depend on access to hydrogen stations, so local availability and live station status are as important as the car’s specifications.
Which hydrogen cars are available or planned?
The table distinguishes market status from performance claims. Figures are manufacturer-published, not independent test results; range, horsepower and MPGe measure different things and should not be compared as though they were interchangeable.
| Model | Market and timing | Powertrain | Published figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Mirai (2026 model year) | Marketed in the U.S.; Toyota expected the 2026 model to reach dealerships in winter 2025. | Fuel-cell electric drive; onboard hydrogen is used to generate electricity for the motor, with a lithium-ion battery storing energy from the fuel-cell system and regenerative braking. | Toyota’s December 3, 2025 announcement lists 182 hp and 402 miles of EPA-estimated range. Announced U.S. MSRP: $51,795, excluding a $1,195 dealer processing and handling fee. |
| Honda CR-V e:FCEV (2026 model year) | Honda’s U.S. information identifies it as California-only. | Fuel cell plus plug-in battery charging. | Honda’s 2025 pricing announcement lists a $50,000 MSRP and 61/52/57 city/highway/combined MPGe. Honda says the ratings account for hydrogen fuel and the high-voltage battery together. |
| Hyundai NEXO (all-new model) | Hyundai Motor Japan announced Japanese sales beginning April 8, 2026; that announcement does not establish availability elsewhere. | Fuel-cell passenger car; the cited Japan announcement describes V2H and V2L functions for that market. | Not stated in the cited Japanese-market sales announcement. |
| BMW iX5 Hydrogen | Future vehicle: BMW says series production is planned for 2028. | Third-generation fuel-cell system jointly developed with Toyota. | Not stated in BMW’s cited 2026 production-plan announcement. |
What to know about each model
Toyota Mirai: a U.S.-market fuel-cell sedan
Toyota describes the 2026 Mirai as generating electricity onboard from hydrogen, with water as its only tailpipe emission. That is a tailpipe-emissions statement, not a measure of the hydrogen’s lifecycle emissions. Toyota’s announced MSRP is a manufacturer-published figure, not a current transaction quote. Toyota’s U.S. model page lists an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty on key fuel-cell components.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.

Honda CR-V e:FCEV: fuel-cell driving with plug-in charging
The CR-V e:FCEV differs from a conventional fuel-cell-only setup by combining the fuel cell with plug-in charging. Its MPGe figures include both hydrogen and high-voltage battery energy, so they are not directly comparable to a battery-only EV’s rating or the Mirai’s range in miles. Honda’s cited U.S. information limits the 2026 vehicle to California.

- 1.This hydrogen fuel cell car model adopts hydrogen-oxygen power generation principle, creating clean energy driving effect to intuitively demonstrate new energy and fuel cell working mechanism.
- 2.It produces hydrogen through the reaction of zinc particles and citric acid, converting chemical energy into electric power to drive the car, helping learners understand energy conversion knowledge visually.
- 3.Designed with complete experimental accessories including hydrogen cylinder, fuel celland spare plug for convenient assembly and smooth science experiment operation.
- 4.Requires 80℃ hot water for stable chemical reaction to ensure sufficient hydrogen output; simple vent exhaust operation helps maintain pure gas for normal power generation performance.
- 5.Ideal STEM teaching instrument for classroom education, home science projects and tech learning.

Hyundai NEXO: a Japan-announced launch
Hyundai Motor Japan announced that sales of the all-new NEXO in Japan would begin April 8, 2026. The Japanese version’s announcement includes vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functions. Do not assume the same equipment or launch date applies to another market.

BMW iX5 Hydrogen: a production plan, not a retail option yet
BMW says the iX5 Hydrogen is intended to enter series production in 2028 and will use a third-generation fuel-cell system developed jointly with Toyota. BMW’s July 2026 announcement says global pilot-fleet testing was completed. The stated production date remains a future plan, not confirmation of a vehicle available for ordinary purchase.

Start with fueling, not advertised range. Toyota directs drivers to the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership for station locations and availability. Check current station status and whether stations fit your regular routes before considering a purchase; a map location alone does not establish that a station is operating or reliably accessible.

- Renewable hydrogen is created using only solar energy and water
- Combining cutting-edge science, education and fun for all!

- Check the market. Confirm that the specific model and model year are offered where you live. The four vehicles above have different market positions: U.S.-market Mirai, California-only CR-V e:FCEV, Japan-announced NEXO, and future BMW production plan.
- Check live hydrogen access. Use the Toyota Mirai page to reach the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership station resource, then verify current availability directly before planning around a station.
- Compare like with like. Treat EPA-estimated range, horsepower and MPGe as separate measures. In particular, Honda’s combined-fuel MPGe includes hydrogen and battery energy.
- Confirm the purchase terms. Manufacturer-announced MSRP does not establish the price a dealer currently offers. Ask the selling dealer for a current quote and confirm applicable fees.
Why the list is not 15 cars
The verified model set here supports four current or specifically announced passenger cars, not 15. Expanding it with discontinued vehicles, concepts, vans, trucks or projects without a substantiated production or market plan would make the count misleading. The International Energy Agency’s 2024 review is historical context: it described a slowdown in the passenger fuel-cell market in 2023 and mentioned vehicles then sold in China, but that does not establish their 2026 availability or status.
