1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Reevo hubless e-bike was a real manufactured product, but it was not a practical triumph. Its centerless wheels, fingerprint lock, integrated lights, GPS, and connected electronics made it one of the most visually ambitious crowdfunded bicycles of its era. The same wheel design also required custom bearings, a nonstandard drivetrain, unusual tire service, rim brakes, and proprietary bodywork. Reports from delivered-bike inspections and teardowns describe heavy resistance, noise, weight, corrosion, difficult repairs, and a potentially troublesome pedal-assist feedback loop.
With the original company’s current operations and support unverified, Reevo now makes sense mainly as a collector’s piece or reverse-engineering project—not as a dependable daily e-bike.
The Reevo hubless e-bike was real—but it was also a lesson in how quickly visual innovation can turn into mechanical, electrical, and business complexity. Beno manufactured and delivered at least some bikes, and the model received U.S. Federal Communications Commission approval for its radio-equipped system in 2021. It was not merely a concept render. But owner and teardown reports describe heavy steering and pedaling resistance, loud mechanical operation, weak-for-its-weight braking, difficult maintenance, corrosion, fragile proprietary parts, and a worrying pedal-assist feedback behavior.
That makes Reevo best understood as a genuine but troubled crowdfunded product, not automatically a scam and certainly not a dependable modern commuter. With the company’s current support, parts supply, app availability, and warranty status unverified, a used example is now more defensibly treated as a collector’s object, engineering curiosity, or reverse-engineering project.

Reevo was built around a hubless—or spokeless—wheel design. Instead of the familiar central hub, axle, and tensioned spokes, the visible wheel rotates around an internal bearing structure. The result is immediately recognizable: you can see through the center of each wheel, and the bicycle looks more like a technology demonstrator than a conventional e-bike.

Beno marketed the design around style, security, and integrated technology. The advertised feature set included a fingerprint-controlled lock, GPS tracking, motion detection, integrated lighting, a removable battery, a phone cradle, and a hidden kickstand. Those features were unusually ambitious for a crowdfunded bicycle of its period, although security and range figures should be treated as company claims rather than independent test results.
| Specification or feature | What the company or contemporary coverage reported |
|---|---|
| Battery | 48 volts, 10.5 Ah, rated at 504 Wh |
| Claimed range | Approximately 60 km, or 37 miles |
| Motor configuration | 750 watts for the U.S. version; 250 watts for the European version |
| Throttle | Included on the stated U.S. configuration; the 250-watt version was described as firmware-limited for regulatory reasons |
| Transmission | Single-speed operation with a custom power-transfer system |
| Brakes | Dual-pivot caliper brakes acting at the rims |
| Weight | Company support material listed 22.3 kg for the bike plus a 2.6-kg battery |
| Load claim | The company was reported to have stress-tested the wheels to 265 pounds, or 120 kg |
The advertised weight works out to roughly 24.9 kg, or 55 pounds, with the battery. That was already heavy by ordinary bicycle standards. Reports on delivered examples put some bikes closer to 30 kg, or 66 pounds. The discrepancy may reflect different configurations, claimed versus measured weight, or both; it is not possible to present one figure as definitive without a controlled weighing of a known configuration.
Reevo was a manufactured product, not just a crowdfunding fantasy
The engineering was unusual, but the product did exist. Beno said development began in 2016 and that the company was founded in 2017, with development and manufacturing activity associated with the United States and Malaysia. The company also claimed more than $5.5 million in orders within nine months and customers in more than 70 countries. Those figures came from Beno and should not be mistaken for independently audited sales data.

The Indiegogo campaign described Reevo as a crowdfunded hubless e-bike and said the money would help pay for injection-molded frame tooling. Its pitch was aimed at people who found conventional e-bikes visually boring and wanted something that looked radically different.
There is stronger evidence that the electronics were real. Beno Inc. submitted Reevo to the FCC as a bicycle with electric drive and received approval for its radio-equipped system on November 3, 2021. That approval confirms a connected electronic device had been built and evaluated for applicable radio requirements. It is not a certification that the bicycle was safe to ride, mechanically reliable, or legally suitable in every market.
The hubless wheel solved a styling problem by creating engineering problems
A normal bicycle wheel is the product of a mature design compromise. Its hub carries the axle and bearings, spokes distribute loads between the hub and rim, and the rim provides a standardized mounting surface for a tire and often a brake. Wheelbuilders, bike shops, and parts suppliers understand how to service that arrangement.
Reevo removed much of that established infrastructure. The outer wheel assembly had to rotate around custom bearing components while supporting radial loads from the rider, lateral loads from cornering, and steering loads at the front. The frame and one-sided mounting system also had to keep the rotating structure aligned. At the same time, the bike needed to transfer human pedal power and electric motor power to a wheel with no conventional hub, while leaving room for a tire and a brake.
That is why the hubless wheel is not just a cosmetic replacement for spokes. It affects nearly every system around it:
- Bearings: They must carry loads over a large rotating assembly and remain properly aligned. Wear, contamination, or misalignment can create drag and noise.
- Drive transmission: Both pedal and motor power require a custom mechanism rather than the familiar hub motor, chain, cassette, and freewheel arrangement.
- Braking: The architecture pushed Reevo toward rim-mounted dual-pivot caliper brakes rather than the disc brakes increasingly common on heavy, powerful e-bikes.
- Tire service: Contemporary coverage described unusual sidewall valve placement and a single-sided wheel mount intended to make tire changes possible without fully dismantling the bicycle.
- Parts supply: Bearings, drive components, wheel structures, covers, and other geometry-specific parts cannot automatically be replaced with ordinary bicycle components.
- Weight and stiffness: A visually open wheel still needs enough structure to withstand real riding loads. The resulting system was considerably more complex than a conventional spoked wheel.
The central trade-off is straightforward: a traditional wheel is relatively light, resilient, and supported by standardized service knowledge. Reevo’s wheel was visually spectacular, but it made the bicycle dependent on custom parts and specialized assembly. The feature that attracted attention also became the feature most likely to complicate ownership.
What riding and teardown reports found
The most serious criticisms came from people examining or riding delivered bikes. They are reported observations, not the result of a formal laboratory test or a statistically representative survey of every Reevo.
Resistance and noise
Later coverage of an actual bike reported that the wheels barely completed a full revolution when spun by hand. The same reporting described difficult pedaling and a loud ride, followed by a rhythmic mechanical noise. Excessive rolling resistance is particularly damaging on an e-bike because it consumes rider effort and battery energy at all times, not just when the motor is under load.

Weight and handling
Reevo’s advertised and observed weights do not line up neatly. Beno’s support material listed 22.3 kg for the bicycle and another 2.6 kg for the battery. BikeMag contrasted a roughly 55-pound claimed figure with a heavier observed bike, while other reporting described delivered examples around 66 pounds.
Even the lower figure makes the bike heavy for lifting onto a rack, carrying up stairs, or maneuvering after a failure. The lack of suspension reported in contemporary coverage adds another compromise: the large, unusual wheel assembly does not automatically produce a smooth ride. A heavy bicycle with rigid construction and questionable rolling resistance places more demand on the brakes, bearings, frame, and rider.
Caliper brakes on a heavy electric bicycle
Reevo used dual-pivot caliper brakes at the rims. Reviewers criticized that choice as relatively weak for a heavy e-bike and compared it unfavorably with the hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes common on contemporary electric bicycles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That criticism is reasonable as a design assessment, but it should not be overstated as proof that every Reevo failed a specific safety standard. The available reporting does not provide a formal independent braking test. The practical point is that a buyer should not assume the bike’s brakes are adequate simply because the levers move or the pads appear present. Brake performance, pad condition, rim condition, cable adjustment, and stopping behavior all need inspection.
A reported pedal-assist feedback loop
One teardown reported an especially concerning control-system behavior. Rolling the bicycle could begin moving the cranks; crank movement could activate pedal assist; the motor could then drive the wheel and continue moving the cranks. BikeMag summarized the behavior as a feedback loop or chain reaction that could make the bicycle run away.
This is a teardown reviewer’s reported behavior, not a proven failure rate for the entire production run. Nevertheless, it is important enough that a prospective owner should verify that the motor can be disabled safely before walking, loading, or transporting the bicycle. Do not treat an unfamiliar Reevo like an ordinary bike until you understand its power controls, controller state, and assist behavior.
Rust, plastic, and proprietary service problems
Teardown coverage reported rusted fasteners and extensive use of plastic components. Other cycling reports described proprietary panels, fenders, battery covers, integrated lights, and other parts that could be vulnerable or difficult to replace.

This is where the project’s real weakness becomes clearer. A broken light or damaged cover on a conventional bicycle may be inconvenient but replaceable. On Reevo, a body panel can be part of the visual design, a battery cover can be tied to the frame geometry, and an integrated light can depend on discontinued electronics. Once the original manufacturer and its parts pipeline become unreliable, minor damage can turn into a long-term immobilizing problem.
The delivery numbers are disputed
Reevo’s crowdfunding history should be described carefully because the available delivery figures conflict.
In an Indiegogo update dated January 8, 2023, the company said 15 batches had shipped or been delivered. The update also acknowledged rising bill-of-materials costs, chip shortages, custom and redesigned parts, COVID-related delays, constrained margins, technical problems, and a need for additional funding or operational support.
A later campaign update reported in July 2023 was said to claim that 1,888 bikes had been delivered. In contrast, reporting based on reviewer Seth Alvo’s account said that approximately 150 bikes had been delivered from roughly 2,700 orders. These numbers may involve different dates or definitions, but the available evidence does not resolve the contradiction. Neither figure should be presented as an independently established final delivery total.

What Reevo got right
It would be unfair to describe the bike as an empty gimmick. The team attempted custom tooling, a new wheel and frame architecture, an integrated electronic system, and a nonstandard drivetrain. Those are substantial engineering and manufacturing tasks.
The biometric lock was one of the more convincing features. Teardown coverage described the fingerprint system, housed within the frame, as a genuinely good idea. Integrated lights, GPS, motion detection, a phone interface, and a hidden kickstand were also inventive features for the time. These features addressed real ownership concerns even if their long-term usefulness depended on software and company support.
That distinction matters. Technical ambition, manufacturing execution, user-serviceability, and business continuity are separate requirements. Reevo demonstrated that a small company could build an extremely unconventional connected bicycle. It did not demonstrate that the resulting product could be maintained affordably for the life of its owners.
By 2025, the support ecosystem appeared to be failing
By 2025, cycling publications reported that Beno had disappeared or stopped reliably supporting customers, while the company website and social channels were no longer consistently accessible. Some company-branded pages and historical support material may still appear in search results. Their existence does not establish that the company is actively manufacturing bikes, stocking parts, answering service requests, honoring warranties, or maintaining the companion app.
That distinction is crucial for anyone shopping now. A surviving product page can preserve old specifications without representing current inventory or support. A marketplace listing can show a bike that physically exists without proving that its battery, charger, controller, app, lights, lock, or replacement bodywork can be supported.
If you are researching a listing for a Reevo hubless e-bike, treat it as a used-bike or leftover-inventory search—not as evidence that a supported new model is available. Ask the seller to demonstrate the exact bike and its included charger, battery, display, control functions, and lock before paying.
The 2026 repair story: a bicycle that became a reverse-engineering project
The Reevo story did not end when official support became uncertain. In 2026, Hackaday reported on repair and reverse-engineering work by Berm Peak. The project reportedly bypassed or jailbroke the controller because important functions depended on an app that was no longer available.
The controller boards were reportedly labeled clearly enough to make protocol reverse engineering possible. The repair effort also addressed the display, fasteners, shrouds, and other interface problems. That is a useful coda because it adds nuance: the bike’s electronics were not necessarily an inscrutable black box, and technically capable owners may be able to keep individual examples alive through custom wiring, fabrication, firmware work, and careful mechanical repair.
It does not mean every Reevo can be repaired easily or economically. Reverse engineering is not a substitute for a parts catalog, a safety recall system, a supported app, or a manufacturer-backed service network. It is an option for a skilled hobbyist who accepts experimentation, uncertain results, and the possibility of making a nonfunctional bike worse.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying a used Reevo today: an inspection checklist
Approach a used Reevo as a project vehicle. The purchase only makes sense if the price reflects uncertain support and you have access to a competent bicycle or e-bike technician.
- Verify the battery and charger. Check the battery for swelling, impact damage, corrosion, overheating history, and secure mounting. Confirm that the charger is present and intended for that battery. A battery that cannot be safely identified or tested can cost more to replace than the bike is worth.
- Confirm control access. Ask the seller to demonstrate the display, power controls, fingerprint lock, lights, GPS-related functions, and any available app connection. Do not assume a factory reset, phone change, or missing app can be solved through ordinary customer support.
- Check the wheel bearings and alignment. Inspect both wheel assemblies for play, scraping, grinding, uneven resistance, and lateral movement. Compare how freely the wheels rotate and look for evidence that the bearing or drive system is rubbing.
- Examine the propulsion behavior cautiously. Find out whether the bicycle can be fully powered down before it is moved. Because of the reported pedal-assist feedback behavior, do not casually rotate the cranks or operate the motor with the bike unsecured. A technician should investigate any unexpected crank or wheel movement.
- Test braking at low speed in a controlled area. Inspect pads, rims, cables, levers, and mounting hardware. A stationary lever check is not enough; stopping performance must be evaluated safely, with room to stop and no traffic.
- Inspect tires and unusual valve hardware. Look for cracking, sidewall damage, leaks, abnormal wear, and missing or damaged valve components. The company described the airless tires as lasting approximately 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but that was a company rating, not a guarantee for an old, stored tire.
- Look for corrosion. Pay special attention to fasteners, bearing areas, electrical connectors, battery contacts, frame cavities, and the underside of plastic covers. Rust can indicate water intrusion or long-term outdoor storage.
- Check the integrated parts. Test every light, cover, fender, kickstand, phone cradle, lock component, and display. A missing proprietary panel or failed integrated light may be difficult to source even if the bicycle remains rideable.
- Price in specialist labor. If you cannot diagnose bearings, electrical controls, and battery condition yourself, get a quote from an e-bike repair shop before buying. A standard bicycle tune-up may not cover the Reevo’s custom systems.
For owners doing mechanical work, an e-bike repair stand and bicycle torque wrench can make inspection and controlled disassembly safer and more practical. These are general workshop tools, not guaranteed solutions for Reevo-specific problems. High-voltage battery work, controller modification, and damaged lithium-ion packs should be left to people with the necessary electrical knowledge and safety equipment.
What can still be repaired or replaced?
Reevo’s historical support material indicated that some ordinary items, including saddles and seatposts, could be interchangeable. It also described brake-pad replacement through a company guide. Those are the relatively encouraging cases.
The uncertain cases are more important: replacement battery packs, chargers, wheel bearings, drivetrain components, electronic modules, body panels, integrated lights, and proprietary covers. Compatibility cannot be assumed from voltage alone. A replacement battery or charger must match the electrical specifications, connector, physical dimensions, charging requirements, and control-system expectations of the exact bike.

Owners with a degraded or damaged pack should not improvise with an unknown battery. A local hazardous-waste program or e-bike battery recycling service is the responsible route when a lithium-ion battery is swollen, damaged, or no longer safe to charge. Availability varies by country and municipality, so verify that the provider accepts e-bike batteries before transport.
Verdict: an impressive prototype that had to behave like a bicycle
Reevo pushed the limits of engineering in a literal sense. Making a hubless wheel carry a rider, transmit pedal and motor power, accommodate a tire, support braking, and integrate with a connected security system was a serious technical achievement. The fingerprint lock and integrated electronics showed that the project had ideas worth preserving.
But a bicycle is not judged only by whether it can be built. It must roll efficiently, stop confidently, survive weather and vibration, accept routine maintenance, and remain supportable after the launch team moves on. On those ownership fundamentals, the hubless architecture appears to have imposed more cost and risk than its visual novelty justified.
So the fair answer to the title is yes: Reevo pushed engineering limits—and, eventually, the credibility of its delivery promises and ownership proposition. It was a real product, but its most important legacy may be a warning for both manufacturers and buyers: replacing mature, repairable components with proprietary spectacle can make a bicycle memorable without making it durable.
Attribution and evidence: Specifications and historical claims above come from Beno’s support and company materials, the Indiegogo campaign and campaign updates, and the FCC record for Beno Inc. Reported riding and teardown observations are attributed to coverage and reviewers including BikeMag, Cycling Magazine, Road.cc, Seth Alvo, and Berm Peak, with later repair reporting covered by Hackaday. Company-reported orders, customer counts, range, stress testing, tire life, and delivery totals are identified as claims rather than independent measurements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the Reevo hubless e-bike a real product?
Yes. Beno manufactured and delivered at least some Reevo bikes. The FCC approved Beno Inc.’s radio-equipped bicycle system on November 3, 2021, and physical bikes were examined by reviewers. That confirms the product was real, but it does not prove that every campaign order was fulfilled or that current support remains available.

How many Reevo bikes were delivered?
The company reported 1,888 deliveries in a July 2023 campaign update, while reporting based on reviewer Seth Alvo’s account estimated that about 150 bikes had been delivered from approximately 2,700 orders. An earlier January 2023 update referred to 15 shipped or delivered batches. The figures conflict and should not be treated as a settled final total.
Should you buy a used Reevo today?
Only if you want a collector’s item or a substantial repair project. Current manufacturing, parts inventory, app continuity, warranty service, and customer support are not independently verified. A buyer should inspect the battery, charger, controls, wheel bearings, brakes, tires, corrosion, and proprietary bodywork before considering a purchase.
Can a Reevo hubless e-bike still be repaired?
Some ordinary components such as saddles, seatposts, and potentially certain tires may be replaceable, and the company documented brake-pad servicing. Battery packs, chargers, wheel bearings, drivetrain parts, electronic modules, integrated lights, covers, and other proprietary components may be difficult or impossible to source. Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact bike.
Does the Reevo have a dangerous pedal-assist behavior?
A teardown reviewer reported that rolling the bike could move the cranks, activate pedal assist, and cause the motor to drive the wheel and cranks in a feedback loop. That report should not be generalized into a failure rate for every Reevo, but any owner should verify that the motor can be safely disabled and investigate unexpected movement before riding or transporting the bike.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Reevo was a genuine manufactured e-bike, but its hubless wheel turned routine bicycle systems into custom engineering challenges. Unless you specifically want a repair or reverse-engineering project, an unsupported used Reevo is a poor choice for dependable transportation.
