It is easy to ride, inexpensive to operate, and visually distinctive, but its 49cc engine limits it to roads where roughly 35–40 mph performance is adequate. The 2024 Honda Ruckus is a simple, low-speed urban scooter—not a highway motorcycle. Its strengths are an approachable automatic drivetrain, a low 28.9-inch seat, a 194-pound curb weight, distinctive styling, useful under-seat storage, and an EPA-estimated 114 mpg. Its defining limitation is the 49cc engine: a stock Ruckus is generally reported to reach about 35–40 mph, depending on the rider, terrain, wind, maintenance, and traffic conditions. Honda does not publish an official horsepower or top-speed figure.
Honda lists the 2024 Ruckus at a $2,899 base MSRP, plus a $300 destination charge. That is not the final out-the-door price. Taxes, title and registration, dealer documentation or assembly fees, insurance, accessories, and dealer-installed options can raise the amount substantially.

Because the 2024 model is now historical inventory rather than the newest model year, availability can differ sharply between dealers. A Honda inventory search may show a listing that has already sold, moved dealerships, or received a different local price. Confirm stock and the final quote directly with the dealer before traveling or placing a deposit. A Honda dealer quote is also the best way to establish whether a particular advertised Ruckus is genuinely available in your area.
Engine and transmission
The Ruckus uses a 49cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine. Honda lists a 37.8mm bore, 44.0mm stroke, 11.9:1 compression ratio, SOHC two-valve cylinder head, and an 18mm CV carburetor with an automatic choke.
Honda does not provide a horsepower rating in the official 2024 specification material. It is therefore more accurate to discuss what the scooter does in use than to attach an unsupported power number to it.
Power reaches the rear wheel through Honda’s automatic V-Matic belt drive. There is no manual clutch, gear lever, or shifting procedure to learn. The transmission also does not have a conventional park or neutral selection, so parking and securing the scooter require following the owner’s manual and local-surface procedures rather than treating it like an automatic car.
Performance and top speed
Independent buying information commonly places a stock Ruckus’s top speed in the 35–40 mph range. That is an estimate, not an official Honda rating or a guaranteed result. Rider weight, tire pressure, hills, altitude, temperature, headwinds, break-in, engine condition, carburetor condition, and belt or drivetrain wear can all change the result.
Acceleration is best described as adequate for compatible urban roads, but not strong. The 49cc engine and automatic transmission make the Ruckus easy to operate, while providing limited reserve power for steep hills, a heavy rider, strong wind, or traffic that is already moving well above the scooter’s likely speed. A rider may need to plan ahead at intersections, merge points, and inclines.
In practical terms, the Ruckus works well for:
- Neighborhood streets with compatible speed limits
- Campus and small-town transportation
- Short urban commutes
- Errands where parking simplicity matters more than speed
It is a poor match for highways, expressways, or any road requiring sustained speeds above the scooter’s stock capability. Local laws may also restrict where a 49cc scooter can operate and may impose licensing, registration, helmet, insurance, or equipment requirements. Check the rules in your state or country before buying.

Fuel economy and estimated range
Honda lists an EPA-test-based fuel-economy estimate of 114 mpg. Actual fuel economy varies with riding style, maintenance, weather, road conditions, tire pressure, accessories, cargo, traffic, and rider weight.
Using the 114 mpg estimate and the approximately 1.3-gallon tank produces a theoretical calculation of about 148 miles per tank:
114 mpg × 1.3 gallons ≈ 148 miles
That is a mathematical estimate, not Honda’s guaranteed real-world range claim. Riders should leave room for reserve fuel, idling, stop-and-go traffic, weather, and their preferred refueling margin. The owner’s manual lists the capacity as 1.32 U.S. gallons, while Honda’s specification page lists 1.3 gallons; the difference does not change the practical conclusion.
Chassis, suspension, tires, and brakes
The Ruckus has a 49.8-inch wheelbase, fat tires, and a low seat. Those dimensions help it feel planted and approachable at low speeds and contribute heavily to its recognizable appearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Front suspension: telescopic fork with 1.9 inches of travel
- Rear suspension: single shock with 2.6 inches of travel
- Front tire: 120/90-10
- Rear tire: 130/90-10
- Brakes: 95mm drum brakes at both ends
The suspension is suitable for ordinary city streets, but the short travel and small 10-inch wheels do not make the Ruckus an off-road vehicle. Potholes, broken pavement, gravel, and wet surfaces deserve more caution than they might on a larger motorcycle with more suspension travel and larger wheels.
The drum brakes are functional for the Ruckus’s intended low-speed role, but they are simpler than the disc-brake systems commonly found on larger scooters. That is one reason buyers who regularly ride in fast traffic, carry significant cargo, or want stronger braking hardware should consider moving up in size.
Dimensions, comfort, and carrying ability
At 194 pounds with required fluids and a full fuel tank, the Ruckus is relatively easy to maneuver by scooter standards. Its 28.9-inch seat is low enough to help many shorter riders place a foot—or both feet—more confidently at a stop.
Honda’s owner’s manual gives a 220-pound maximum weight capacity including the rider and accessories. This is a load limit, not a promise that every rider near that weight will experience the same acceleration, hill-climbing ability, braking performance, or comfort. Clothing, a backpack, a lock, and other equipment count toward the limit.

- Officially licensed Honda product in the Moto Motos series 2025
- Yellow body with black details and faithful markings
- Precise modeling of headlights, seat and iconic box design

The Ruckus is configured for one rider only. It is not a practical choice for someone who needs to carry a passenger. Under-seat storage is useful for a small bag, backpack, or skateboard, but storage volume is limited; verify the compartment’s dimensions before assuming a full-size helmet, groceries, or a particular case will fit.
Features and everyday practicality
The Ruckus’s appeal comes partly from what it leaves out. Honda highlights electric start, an automatic choke, dual headlights, under-seat storage, fat tires, minimal bodywork, and the one-speed automatic transmission.
The open frame and sparse bodywork make the scooter visually distinctive and easy to recognize. They also mean less wind and weather protection than a fully faired scooter. In regular rain or cold weather, a rider will need appropriate clothing, and exposed components may require more attention to cleaning and storage.
Electric start and automatic operation make the Ruckus accessible to beginners, but “simple” does not mean maintenance-free. It remains a carbureted vehicle, and long storage or changing conditions can create more fuel-system and starting concerns than a modern fuel-injected scooter. A proper storage routine and a healthy battery matter, particularly for seasonal riders.

Colors and photos
Honda’s 2024 materials identify two factory colors: Black and Beige. Honda’s official 2024 model page and brochure are the most appropriate references for factory photography, color presentation, and standard-feature images.
Color can look different depending on lighting, screen settings, and photography. Dealer-installed accessories, aftermarket parts, and market-specific equipment may also appear in photos. Anyone republishing Honda images should verify image-use rights and any required attribution; an official product image is not automatically free for unrestricted reuse.
Maintenance and replacement parts
The 2024 owner’s manual provides the following useful service-fitment information:
| Item | Honda-listed information |
|---|---|
| Battery | YTZ7S |
| Standard spark plug | NGK CR8EH-9 |
| Cold-climate spark plug | NGK CR7EH-9 |
| High-speed-riding spark plug | NGK CR9EH-9 |
| Engine oil | 10W-30 motorcycle oil meeting the manual’s API/JASO requirements |
| Coolant | Pro Honda HP Coolant or an equivalent coolant |
| Recommended tire model | Kenda K761 |
| Front/rear tire sizes | 120/90-10 front; 130/90-10 rear |
Battery and seasonal storage
If the scooter cranks weakly or will not start after storage, the manual’s YTZ7S specification is the correct starting point for research. A YTZ7S replacement battery for Honda Ruckus can be a reasonable shopping search, but do not rely only on a retailer’s vehicle list. Confirm the 2024 model, battery dimensions, terminal polarity, capacity, and the seller’s return policy before ordering. A battery tender can also be useful for a vehicle stored for extended periods, but it is a general storage accessory rather than a substitute for diagnosing a charging-system or battery fault.
Spark plug and fluids
The standard plug listed for the 2024 model is the NGK CR8EH-9 spark plug. Honda’s manual also identifies CR7EH-9 for cold climates and CR9EH-9 for high-speed riding. That means the standard plug should not automatically be treated as the only permissible choice in every operating condition. Confirm the designation in the owner’s manual and follow the maintenance procedure rather than changing heat range casually.
Use the specified 10W-30 motorcycle oil and a coolant meeting the manual’s requirements. Check the exact API and JASO language in the manual or on the product container; “10W-30” alone does not establish that an oil is the correct motorcycle formulation. Dispose of used oil and coolant according to local rules.

Tire replacement
Replacement tires must match the front and rear fitments, not merely the 10-inch wheel diameter. The stock sizes are 120/90-10 at the front and 130/90-10 at the rear, and Honda lists Kenda K761 as the recommended tire model. Before ordering a Honda Ruckus 120/90-10 front tire or a Honda Ruckus 130/90-10 rear tire, verify the exact model year, load rating, speed rating, tube or tubeless requirement where applicable, and whether the listing is for the correct wheel position. A tire labeled for a Ruckus is not automatically a guaranteed fit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy the 2024 Honda Ruckus?
The Ruckus makes the most sense for a buyer who values personality, low operating cost, simplicity, and easy low-speed handling. It is particularly well matched to short trips on roads where 35–40 mph performance is compatible with the surrounding traffic.
It is less suitable for someone who needs:
- Highway or expressway capability
- Strong acceleration for hills or fast merges
- Passenger carrying
- Substantial weather protection
- More powerful brakes or larger wheels
- Modern fuel injection and the lowest possible long-storage fuss
Those needs point toward a larger scooter or motorcycle. Spending more for additional displacement can buy a meaningful improvement in speed reserve, hill performance, braking equipment, comfort, and traffic compatibility—not merely a different badge.
2024 Honda Ruckus: pros and cons
Pros
- Distinctive styling and minimal bodywork
- Low 28.9-inch seat
- Relatively light 194-pound curb weight
- Automatic operation and electric start
- Excellent official fuel-economy estimate
- Useful under-seat storage for a small urban vehicle
- Large aftermarket and owner community
Cons
- Limited performance from the 49cc engine
- No Honda-published horsepower or official top-speed figure
- Unsuitable for highway travel and sustained high-speed traffic
- Rider-only configuration
- Drum brakes and small wheels are less sophisticated than larger scooters’ hardware
- Carbureted induction may need more attention after long storage
- Taxes and dealer fees make the final cost higher than the advertised MSRP
Bottom line
The 2024 Honda Ruckus is a deliberately uncomplicated urban scooter with a strong visual identity and exceptionally low fuel consumption. At $2,899 before the $300 destination charge and other costs, it is inexpensive to buy relative to larger scooters, and its automatic transmission, low seat, and light weight make it approachable.
Its limits are equally clear. The 49cc engine offers modest acceleration, stock top speed is generally estimated at only 35–40 mph, it carries one rider, and its open design provides little weather protection. Buy it for short, low-speed transportation and character—not as a cheap replacement for a highway-capable motorcycle.
