Waymo cars detect obstacles by combining lidar, cameras, radar, external audio receivers, detailed maps and AI software. The Waymo Driver uses those inputs to identify and track what is around the vehicle, estimate how road users may move, and choose a maneuver such as slowing, stopping, yielding or steering around a blockage. It keeps sensing as it acts, so it can update its plan when the scene changes.
What sensors does the Waymo Driver use?
Google’s Self-Driving Car Project became Waymo; the company says the project began in 2009 and provided its first fully autonomous rides in 2015. Its current autonomous-driving system is called the Waymo Driver. Waymo describes its approach as using several sensor types together rather than relying on a camera or any other single device.
Lidar measures three-dimensional shape and distance
Lidar emits laser pulses and measures how long reflections take to return. The resulting measurements help the vehicle build a three-dimensional picture of nearby objects and their distances around the car. Waymo says its lidar can measure surroundings at ranges of up to 300 meters. Its 2021 safety report says lidar works in daylight and darkness.
Cameras provide visual context
Cameras give the system visual information across a 360-degree field of view. That context helps it interpret features such as traffic signs, signals and other details whose meaning is visual—not just a shape or distance.

Radar measures distance and motion
Radar provides information about an object’s distance, speed and direction. Waymo describes it as continuously tracking the presence and speed of road users around the vehicle, and says radar helps in rain, fog and snow. That is a useful additional input in difficult conditions, not a guarantee that the car can operate safely in every weather condition.
External audio receivers add siren information
Audio receivers outside the vehicle can detect emergency-vehicle sirens. Sound supplies a cue that cameras, lidar and radar do not provide, helping the system account for an approaching emergency vehicle.
How does sensor fusion help avoid false detections?
The system compares sensor inputs so that an ambiguous reading from one device does not have to determine the response by itself. Waymo gives the example of a camera detecting what looks like a stop sign: lidar can help assess whether it is a physical sign or instead a reflection in a storefront or an image on a bus. Radar’s readings about speed and trajectory can also help distinguish moving objects, while lidar contributes information about their geometry.

- [4K+1080P Dual Recording] REDTIGER F7N TOUCH captures your drive journey in stunning 4K UHD resolution with STARVIS 2 sensor 170° wide-angle view for the front dash cam and 1080P FHD resolution 140° wide-angle for the rear car camera. Equipped with WDR and HDR technology, the enhanced super night vision ensures better visibility even in low-light situations, providing you with reliable recordings day and night.
- [Voice Control & Touch Screen] F7NTOUCH dashcam features voice commands, allowing for hands-free control of your 4K car camera, which enhances safety by minimizing distractions. The dual camera dash cam also has smart touchscreen that can lock emergency video, turn on wifi, and capture scenery with one click. Redtiger also retains the buttons, multiple control methods are integrated.
- [Built-in GPS & 5.8GHz WiFi] Both Android and IOS users can connect to dashcam WiFi via the REDTIGER Cam app. Although the dash cam is installed wired, you can enjoy wireless control on your smartphone, faster 20MB/s download speed and share your driving experiences in real-time with friends and insurance companies. Car recorder built-in GPS provides traceable location, speed, and accurate route in the recordings.
- [Loop Recording & G-Sensor] REDTIGER F7N TOUCH dual channel dash cam automatically overwrites the oldest footage when the memory is full, ensuring endless recording with the included 128GB card. With a built-in G-sensor that detects sudden movements or impacts, it automatically locks and protects the associated footage when an event is detected on the road, ensuring it won't be overwritten during loop recording.
- [24-hour Parking Monitoring*] REDTIGER Car dashboard camera offers G-Sensor Parking Mode that automatically record when it detects any collisions or sudden motion while vehicles is parked. Time Lapse Parking Mode provides continuous surveillance by offering a condensed overview of any events that may occur during parking periods. *Please note that the parking monitoring function requires a separate hardwire kit.
This layered design matters because the sensors contribute different kinds of evidence. Cameras add visual meaning, lidar provides detailed geometry, and radar adds motion and weather-related information. Combining those inputs gives the vehicle more than one way to assess the scene; it does not mean every sensor sees every obstacle equally well in every condition.
How does detection turn into an avoidance maneuver?
Waymo’s public descriptions establish the broad stages of the process, but do not disclose every proprietary rule the planner uses to choose a trajectory.
- Perception: AI models process synchronized sensor data to identify and track objects and road features, including pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, construction, traffic lights and cones.
- Localization and scene context: The vehicle matches live sensor readings against detailed custom maps to estimate where it is and which road structures it is observing.
- Prediction: Models estimate how nearby road users may move next. This helps the system consider not only where an obstacle is now, but how the surrounding situation could develop.
- Planning: A planner evaluates possible paths and selects a maneuver. Depending on the situation, that can mean slowing down, stopping, yielding, changing lane position or routing around a blocked path.
- Control and replanning: The vehicle carries out the selected maneuver while continuing to collect sensor data. If the scene changes, the system can update its understanding and choose a new plan.
Can Waymo cars detect pedestrians at night or in fog?
Waymo’s 2021 safety report describes 360-degree sensing in both daytime and nighttime conditions, and says lidar works in darkness. Radar supplies distance, speed and direction information and is described by Waymo as useful in fog and other adverse weather. These capabilities address different challenges: darkness limits ordinary visual information, while fog, rain or snow can affect what sensors can observe.

Those descriptions do not establish that every pedestrian will be detected at every distance or that the system can drive in all visibility and weather conditions. Waymo’s public material describes the sensor capabilities and the combined driving process, but the precise operating limits for a particular trip or condition should not be inferred from a single sensor’s stated range or weather benefit.
Why use several sensor types instead of one?
Each sensor contributes a different view of the road. A camera can identify visual features but may need other evidence to determine whether an apparent sign is real. Lidar supplies three-dimensional geometry, while radar contributes motion information and can help in difficult weather. External audio adds siren detection. Maps provide prior road context, and live readings help the car locate itself and revise its picture of the surroundings.

The practical point is that obstacle avoidance is not a single act of “seeing” an object. It is a continuing cycle of sensing, interpreting, predicting and choosing a maneuver, with the sensors updating the vehicle’s understanding while it drives.
