Volvo Cars says it uses sensor data from real-world incidents to build editable virtual traffic scenarios for developing safety software. The scenes can be varied to expose software to rare hazards—but the company’s March 2025 announcement describes an engineering method and intended safety benefit, not proof that it has reduced crashes on public roads.
What Volvo means by “reconstructing” crashes
Volvo’s description is not of a consumer crash-reconstruction tool, nor does it establish that every virtual scene exactly reproduces a particular collision. The company says it can synthesize, reconstruct, and explore incident data gathered by sensors in newer vehicles. Its examples include moments involving emergency braking, sharp steering, or manual intervention.
Engineers use those real-world inputs to create virtual traffic situations and investigate how safety software might respond. The aim, Volvo says, is to learn from incidents and explore related possibilities without having to wait for every unusual event to occur again on the road.
How Gaussian splatting makes the scenes editable
Gaussian splatting is a neural-rendering technique Volvo describes as turning real-world visuals into realistic, high-fidelity 3D scenes and subjects. In this workflow, the virtual environment is not simply a fixed replay: Volvo says engineers can alter elements of a scene to create different outcomes.

- Add or remove road users.
- Change how traffic behaves.
- Introduce or alter obstacles.
For example, a scenario based on an incident can be varied to explore what the software might do if the surrounding traffic or road hazard were different. Volvo says a rare corner case can be expanded into thousands of variations for model training and validation. That is a description of the technique’s potential, not a reported count of completed test runs.
Why vary virtual traffic scenarios?
Ordinary driving may not expose a vehicle’s safety software to every unusual, potentially dangerous situation. Volvo gives examples such as an animal entering the road, a falling object, a vehicle traveling the wrong way, flooding, or a dust tornado. These are illustrative edge cases from the company’s explainer, not evidence that each one has been tested in this specific program.

Volvo says virtual scenarios can make it safer and more scalable to work through rare cases than relying on real-world events alone. Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo Cars’ Head of Global Software Engineering, said: “We already have millions of data points of moments that never happened that we use to develop our software”. Volvo’s statement describes data used in development; it does not define the dataset or provide a methodology for counting it.
What Volvo claims about development time
Volvo says its approach can reduce the time to expose safety software to edge cases “from months to days.” This is the company’s reported development-workflow claim. The March 2025 announcement does not provide an independently measured comparison, test methodology, or evidence that this time saving has translated into fewer crashes.

Who is involved in the work?
Volvo says the virtual environments are developed in-house with Zenseact, an AI and software company founded by Volvo Cars. The project is part of a PhD program with leading Swedish universities, sponsored by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). Volvo describes the research question as whether neural-rendering techniques will be integrated into future safety initiatives; that wording indicates exploration, not a confirmed product feature.
The company also connects its Gaussian-splatting work with an expanded relationship with NVIDIA. Volvo says NVIDIA DGX systems power an AI supercomputing platform used to contextualize sensor data and train future safety models. The announcement does not establish a consumer product offering or independently verified operational performance for that platform.
Virtual scenarios complement real-world testing
Volvo describes virtual environments as part of software training, development, and validation alongside real-world testing—not as a replacement for it. The company presents simulation as a way to broaden and scale the situations engineers can examine, while real-world testing remains part of the process.

This software-focused work is distinct from conventional structural crash simulation. In a 2007 account, Volvo described using supercomputers, a crash simulator, and physical testing at its Safety Centre to study crash loads and vehicle response. That historical program is not the same method as the 2025 work on editable virtual traffic scenes. The 2007 release reported a supercomputer capacity of “more than 45 simulated car crashes per day” and said more than 400 cars were tested in full-scale crashes annually at that time; neither figure establishes a current capacity or testing rate.
What the announcement does—and does not—show
Volvo’s account explains how incident-derived data and editable virtual scenes may help engineers expose safety software to a wider range of situations. The cited company materials do not provide an independent study, a measured crash-reduction result, or a validation methodology showing that this approach has made vehicles safer in observed road use. The intended benefit is Volvo’s stated goal; the demonstrated evidence in these materials is the described development approach.
