Toyota’s Dynamic Force engines use high-compression, fast-combustion designs and measures to reduce energy losses, but the available figures do not establish that the whole family beats every rival. Toyota’s published efficiency figures concern a specific 2.0-liter engine announced in 2018; a useful vehicle-level comparison is the 2024 RAV4 Hybrid versus the Honda CR-V Hybrid, where drivetrain and hybrid-system design affect the result.
What Toyota means by Dynamic Force
Dynamic Force is a Toyota engine technology family, not one engine with one set of specifications. The detailed technical figures available here are for the 2.0-liter direct-injection inline-four Toyota announced in 2018, including conventional and hybrid variants. They should not be generalized to every Dynamic Force displacement or vehicle.
Toyota describes the design as combining high-speed combustion with variable control to improve thermal efficiency and reduce energy lost through exhaust and cooling, moving parts, and other areas. Its approach includes a long-stroke layout, high compression, fuel-injection and valve-timing systems, and hardware intended to manage heat and friction.
- Combustion and compression: The approximately 1.2 stroke-to-bore ratio and high compression are part of the engine’s combustion strategy. Toyota lists compression ratios of 13:1 for the conventional version and 14:1 for the hybrid version.
- Fuel and valve control: Toyota lists D-4S injection with a multi-hole direct injector and VVT-iE. The announcement presents these systems as part of the engine’s combustion and variable-control approach.
- Heat and friction management: A motor-driven water pump, heated thermostat, water-jacket spacer, continuously variable-capacity oil pump, low-viscosity oil, and laser-pit piston skirt are among the measures Toyota lists to address thermal or mechanical losses.
Toyota’s 2018 announcement reports these engine-specific figures for the announced 2.0-liter variants. The peak thermal-efficiency figures are Toyota Motor Corporation claims stated as of February 2018; they are not results from a matched real-world test against competing engines.

| Announced 2.0-liter variant | Compression ratio | Maximum thermal efficiency | Engine output | Peak torque |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional gasoline | 13:1 | 40% (Toyota Motor Corporation, as of February 2018) | 126 kW at 6,600 rpm | 205 N·m at 4,800 rpm |
| Hybrid | 14:1 | 41% (Toyota Motor Corporation, as of February 2018) | 107 kW at 6,000 rpm | 180 N·m at 4,400 rpm |
These are engine specifications, not hybrid-system totals. Peak thermal efficiency describes how effectively an engine converts fuel energy to useful work at its most efficient operating point; it is not the same measure as a vehicle’s mpg over an EPA test cycle. Toyota also says the design increases torque across low-to-high engine speeds compared with its own existing engines, but its announcement does not quantify an advantage over rival engine families. Toyota’s 2018 technical announcement provides the underlying specifications and design description.
2024 RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid: a vehicle-level comparison
A useful bounded comparison is the U.S.-market 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid against the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Toyota’s comparison describes the RAV4 as using a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. The figures below compare the vehicles’ complete hybrid systems and EPA-estimated vehicle fuel economy—not engine-only output or a direct measurement of the 2.0-liter engine above.

| 2024 U.S. configuration | Hybrid-system output | EPA-estimated city / highway / combined economy |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, most trims | 219 combined net hp | 41 / 38 / 39 mpg |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Woodland Edition | 219 combined net hp | 38 / 35 / 37 mpg |
| Honda CR-V Hybrid, AWD | 204 combined net hp | 40 / 34 / 37 mpg |
| Honda CR-V Hybrid, 2WD | 204 combined net hp | 43 / 36 / 40 mpg |
The values are from Toyota Motor North America’s model-year 2024 comparison page. It reports the RAV4 Hybrid system at 219 combined net hp and the CR-V Hybrid system at 204 combined net hp; that difference does not isolate the gasoline engines’ contribution. For combined fuel economy, Toyota’s listed RAV4 figure for most trims is higher than the CR-V AWD figure, while the CR-V 2WD estimate is higher than the RAV4 figure for most trims. Trim and drivetrain therefore change which vehicle has the higher listed combined estimate.
Toyota’s page includes a JATO Dynamics Limited caveat: JATO does not warrant the accuracy or completeness of its data, which may not be comprehensive or use consistent terminology. Treat the precise comparison as a published reference for these configurations, not as a universal verdict on either manufacturer’s technology. Toyota’s 2024 RAV4 Hybrid versus CR-V Hybrid comparison gives the vehicle figures and caveat.

Why hybrid architecture makes engine-only comparisons incomplete
The Honda CR-V Hybrid’s two-motor system can operate in series or parallel. Honda says that most of the time the propulsion motor drives the wheels while the gasoline engine-generator supplies electrical power; primarily at highway cruising, the engine can also drive the wheels through a lockup clutch. In a system that changes how engine and electric-motor power reach the wheels, comparing displacement or peak engine output alone leaves out a large part of how the vehicle operates.
Honda’s January 22, 2026 release identifies its fourth-generation two-motor system in the 2023-and-later CR-V and Accord, 2025-and-later Civic, and 2026-and-later Prelude. That system description helps explain the architecture, but it is not a matched test of the CR-V and RAV4. Honda’s two-motor hybrid system overview describes its operating modes and listed applications.

How Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G approach compares
Mazda’s U.S. SKYACTIV overview identifies SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter gasoline engines and highlights higher compression ratios as part of its efficiency approach. That is a different manufacturer’s stated engineering emphasis, but the overview does not supply matched engine output, peak thermal-efficiency figures, or same-cycle fuel-economy results against Toyota’s announced 2.0-liter engine. It supports comparing design priorities, not naming a numerical winner. Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology overview describes the approach.
What the comparison establishes—and what it does not
Toyota’s published material establishes a detailed efficiency-oriented design for its announced 2.0-liter Dynamic Force engine and gives manufacturer-reported peak thermal-efficiency figures. The RAV4-versus-CR-V example shows that Toyota’s hybrid system has higher listed combined net output and that its AWD configuration has a higher EPA-estimated combined figure than the compared CR-V AWD configuration. It also shows why a single headline result is insufficient: the CR-V 2WD estimate exceeds the RAV4 figure listed for most trims.

Those facts do not establish that all Dynamic Force engines are more efficient, more powerful, or more durable than competing engines. There is no matched, current, same-market comparison here across the families’ displacements, model years, drivetrains, and test cycles, and the cited efficiency claims do not establish long-term reliability. The fair verdict is that Toyota presents a technically ambitious efficiency strategy and a favorable result in one specific AWD hybrid-SUV comparison—not an across-the-board win over Honda, Mazda, or every competitor.
