Toyota revived a non-running 1986 Sprinter Trueno GTV that had spent five years in storage by combining extensive body restoration with an in-house overhaul of its 4A-GE engine. The project depended on careful parts sourcing and repair work—not a wholesale replacement with new parts—and it also showcased Toyota’s effort to reproduce hard-to-find AE86 components.
Which AE86 did Toyota restore?
The car was a 1986 Sprinter Trueno GTV, one version of the fifth-generation Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno sports model Toyota offered from 1983 to 1987. Toyota says AE86 refers to versions equipped with the 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4A-GEU engine. The Levin and Trueno were offered as a two-door notchback coupe or a three-door hatchback coupe; verify a specific car’s market, trim and engine before assuming parts compatibility. The project car was in especially poor condition: it had not run and had been stored in a warehouse for five years. Toyota describes severe corrosion, holes in the floor, and missing rear-door and moonroof parts. Its aftermarket wheels, steering wheel and exhaust manifold were replaced with used genuine parts; the seats were dirty but intact, and the separately stored exterior parts were accounted for. The rebuild did not mean every component was replaced with a new Heritage part.
How did Toyota restore the old AE86?
Three engineers from GR Garage Mito Keyakidai and two master craftsmen from Ibaraki Toyota TH Center handled the body restoration. Toyota says the process included condition assessment, disassembly, parts sourcing, corrosion repair, painting, and suspension and engine reassembly. The team removed the bumpers, lights, engine, transmission, differential, suspension, interior and windows so it could inspect the body and address damage.

Repairing corrosion and missing body sections
Where original replacement panels were unavailable, the team fabricated repair pieces. For example, rust-damaged inner fenders were recreated from material salvaged from a Hiace. Other missing or corroded areas were shaped and welded. After the metalwork, the body was repainted; interior parts were cleaned, while suspension and brake components were derusted.
Using a mix of parts and expertise
Available genuine parts, including GR Heritage Parts, were installed new where appropriate. Other pieces were reused or replaced with used genuine parts, while some body sections had to be fabricated. Toyota says GR Garage Mito Keyakidai, operated by Ibaraki Toyota, carried out the body restoration, and Toyota handled the engine work in-house. The project illustrates the practical distinction between a reproduced service part, a used original component and a custom repair: the right solution depended on what was available and what the car needed.

Hironori Tanaka, manager of GR Garage Mito Keyakidai, recalled: “When I first saw the AE86, it was covered in rust. It was so bad that I wondered if it could even be fixed.“
What did Toyota change in the reproduced 4A-GE parts?
Toyota assembled the revived car’s engine using prototype cylinder-head and block sub-assemblies. The reproduced components retain the original basic design and specifications, but Toyota says their development used current simulation technology, manufacturing methods and materials. The restoration case says the original engineers had retired and blueprints remained; the team used 3D scanning and digital CAD to recreate parts, with the AE92 serving as a frequent reference in customer requests. These are manufacturing and design updates described by Toyota, not published proof of a particular horsepower gain or a quantified improvement in driving performance. Toyota’s materials do not report either for this restoration.

Toyota announced its AE86 GR Heritage Parts program in 2021, initially naming rear brake calipers and steering knuckle arms, followed by rear driveshafts. The program’s purpose is to reproduce selected discontinued parts and offer them through Toyota dealers as preparations are completed. Toyota also cautions that production periods and remaining stock can limit availability. The 2021 program announcement explains its launch.

As of February 2026, Toyota said 29 AE86 GR Heritage Parts had been reproduced. Its catalog dated August 1, 2026 lists 29 items across brake, steering, drivetrain, electrical, lighting and engine categories, including the 4A-GE head and block sub-assemblies. The catalog says parts can be purchased through a Toyota dealer and notes that designs, specifications and prices may change. See Toyota’s AE86 parts list.
Can you still get 4A-GE parts for a Corolla AE86?
Toyota’s September 2025 announcement forecast a launch around May 2026 for the reproduced cylinder head and block sub-assemblies, but said the schedule could change and sales could be postponed if order volume was insufficient. The later catalog lists the parts, but that listing alone does not establish stock or ordering availability in every country. Toyota’s current AE86 page shows “No items planned” in its order-timeline table, so check the latest local catalog and ask a Toyota dealer to confirm status for the exact part number, model and market before planning a repair.

Availability is not the same as fitment: confirm whether the car is an AE86 Levin or Trueno, its engine and market specification, and the exact component before ordering. Toyota’s GR Heritage Parts background guide describes the program; a dealer can verify current local ordering details.
What this restoration shows—and what it does not
The AE86’s return depended on several kinds of work working together: skilled corrosion repair, parts that could be sourced or reproduced, used genuine components where appropriate, and an engine overhaul informed by Toyota’s engineering records and tools. Toyota’s account documents the restoration approach and the parts program, but it does not state the rebuild’s total cost, exact duration or post-restoration performance. The figures and project details here are Toyota’s own published account, not an independent audit.
