Yes, you can use an old Android tablet as an Android Auto display—but you cannot normally do it by installing Google’s standard Android Auto app on the tablet. Your Android phone remains the Android Auto computer, while the tablet runs a third-party head-unit emulator that acts like the car’s compatible display.
The most reliable way to start is a wired USB connection using Headunit Revived or Headunit Reloaded Emulator (HUR). Once that works, you can try wireless mode, route sound through the vehicle, and decide whether the setup is reliable enough for daily driving.

How the tablet-based setup works
In a normal Android Auto installation, the phone runs Android Auto and connects to a compatible factory or aftermarket car stereo. The stereo supplies the display, speakers, microphone, and vehicle controls.

- Android phone: Runs Android Auto, supplies mobile data, and usually supplies the location information.
- Tablet: Runs a head-unit emulator and displays the Android Auto interface.
- Vehicle audio system: Plays the sound through Bluetooth, AUX, an FM transmitter, USB audio, or the tablet’s own speakers.
That means the tablet does not normally run Android Auto independently. It is emulating a compatible car display. HUR also offers a same-device “Self Mode,” but that is different from the usual phone-to-tablet arrangement.
Google’s official Android Auto documentation describes Android Auto as a phone connecting to a compatible car display. See Google’s Android Auto requirements and setup guidance before assuming that an old tablet meets the requirements.
What you need
Tablet requirements
- An Android tablet with a working touchscreen.
- Google Play Store and Google Play Services, where required by the chosen emulator.
- USB Host/OTG support for the simplest wired setup.
- Wi-Fi support for wireless projection.
- Enough processing power and memory to render maps smoothly.
- A screen bright enough to read in daylight.
- A healthy battery without swelling or serious degradation.
- A built-in microphone if you expect to use Assistant or hands-free calls.
Headunit Revived documents Android 4.1 or newer tablet support, while recommending Android 9 or newer for better wireless performance. That minimum does not make every old tablet suitable for vehicle use. Very old hardware may lack current Google services, have poor Wi-Fi performance, or stutter when rendering maps.
Phone requirements
- An Android phone that supports Android Auto.
- Android Auto installed or integrated into the phone’s operating system.
- An active mobile data plan for online maps, traffic, streaming, and messages.
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services, and mobile data enabled for wireless setups.
Google generally lists Android 9 or newer for most wired phone connections and Android 11 or newer for wireless Android Auto, with additional vehicle and stereo requirements. These are phone-side requirements; they do not guarantee that a particular tablet will work as an emulator receiver. Check Google’s current Android Auto requirements.
Other equipment
- A quality USB data cable—not a charging-only cable.
- A USB OTG adapter or OTG cable if the tablet needs one to act as host.
- A charger capable of maintaining the tablet’s battery while its screen, processor, and Wi-Fi are active.
- A secure dashboard, vent, windshield, or vehicle-specific tablet mount.
- An audio connection: Bluetooth, AUX, FM transmitter, or compatible USB audio.
Do not leave a tablet with a damaged or swollen lithium-ion battery in a hot parked car. During installation, keep the tablet out of airbag deployment zones and make sure it does not block the driver’s view, gauges, controls, or vents. Follow local laws governing windshield and dashboard-mounted devices.
Check the tablet before installing anything
Work through this checklist before buying accessories:
- Check the Android version. Newer Android versions generally provide better app and wireless compatibility.
- Test USB Host mode. Connect a USB flash drive or keyboard through the appropriate OTG adapter. If the tablet cannot recognize either device, wired Android Auto is unlikely to work.
- Confirm Google services. HUR states that Google Play Services may be required. Tablets without Google services, including some Amazon Fire models, may not work reliably.
- Test Wi-Fi. Wireless use is easier with stable 5 GHz support, although 2.4 GHz may work.
- Inspect the battery. A tablet that only works briefly when unplugged may drain even while connected to a weak charger.
- Evaluate brightness and viewing angle. A dim screen can be unusable in direct sun.
- Test performance. Open a map and music app together. Slow storage, limited RAM, or an old processor can cause lag.
- Check the microphone. Navigation may work perfectly even if calls and voice commands do not.
The important distinction is between “can install” and “usable in a vehicle.” A tablet meeting a documented minimum may still be a poor daily head unit.

The recommended first method: wired USB
Wired mode avoids many wireless variables, including hotspot behavior, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth triggers, background restrictions, and manufacturer-specific networking changes. Start with it even if you ultimately want a wireless installation.
Option 1: Headunit Revived
- Install Headunit Revived from its official distribution channel.
- Confirm that Android Auto is available and working on the phone.
- Connect the phone to the tablet using a data-capable USB cable.
- Use an OTG adapter or reverse the cable arrangement if the tablet needs to become the USB host.
- Open Headunit Revived on the tablet.
- Tap the USB connection button.
- Select the phone when it appears.
- Approve the USB permission prompt.
- Wait for Android Auto to launch.
If Android asks which app should handle the USB device, select Headunit Revived. Choose Always only if this tablet will primarily be used as the receiver.
Option 2: Headunit Reloaded Emulator
- Install Headunit Reloaded Emulator on the tablet.
- Open HUR.
- Connect the phone using the correct OTG arrangement and a USB data cable.
- When Android displays a USB-handler prompt, select HUR and approve the permissions.
- On Android 7 and newer, check the notification shade and select the connected USB device if HUR does not start automatically.
- If the display remains black, try HUR’s software-decoding option.
HUR is a paid app listed at $4.99 in the U.S. Google Play listing checked August 18, 2026. It supports USB, Wi-Fi, and Self Mode, but its success remains device- and Android-version-dependent. Current user reports include crashes and connection failures, so treat it as an established option rather than a universal solution.
What success looks like
The tablet should display Android Auto features such as supported navigation, media, messaging, and voice functions. The phone remains the Android Auto source and normally provides the data connection. Test the complete setup while parked before mounting anything permanently.
Wireless Android Auto from the phone to the tablet
Wireless mode removes the cable between the phone and tablet, but it is usually more temperamental. Depending on the software and devices, the connection may use Wi-Fi Direct, a shared Wi-Fi network, the phone’s hotspot, Bluetooth triggers, or a manual IP address.
Headunit Revived Wireless Helper method
- Install Headunit Revived on the tablet.
- Install the official Headunit Revived Wireless Helper companion app on the phone.
- Open Headunit Revived’s wireless settings.
- Set Wireless Mode to Helper Mode.
- Open Wireless Helper on the phone and start its service.
- Choose Wi-Fi Direct where supported. Otherwise use a shared Wi-Fi network or the phone’s hotspot.
- Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services, and mobile data enabled on the phone.
- Start the vehicle and wait for discovery.
- If Android Auto does not open, launch Headunit Revived manually and retry.
Headunit Revived’s wireless documentation identifies Wireless Helper as the recommended automatic-trigger route. It also documents Wi-Fi Direct, shared Wi-Fi, phone hotspot, Auto-Scan, and manual connection modes. Helper Mode is recommended by the project, not guaranteed for every phone and tablet combination.
HUR wireless method
- Install the HUR WiFi Launcher app on the phone.
- Where applicable, select the vehicle’s Bluetooth device in WiFi Launcher.
- Enable the hotspot option.
- Connect the tablet to the phone’s hotspot.
- Open HUR on the tablet.
HUR notes that hotspot and client roles may be reversed. Android versions and phone manufacturers can use different labels, so the exact menus may not match these steps.

Developer-mode and manual connections
Headunit Revived also documents an Auto-Scan and Manual route:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Android Auto settings on the phone.
- Tap the Android Auto version repeatedly—Headunit Revived documents tapping Version 10 times—to enable developer mode.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Select Start Headunit Server.
- In Headunit Revived, choose Auto-Scan or Manual Mode.
- For Manual Mode, enter the phone’s current IP address.
Menu names can change with Android Auto updates. Headunit Revived also documents this automation URI:
headunit://connect?ip=<PHONE_IP>
Example ADB command:
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d "headunit://connect?ip=192.168.1.25"
The address shown is only an example. Replace it with the phone’s current IP address.
Plan the audio connection before mounting the tablet
A working Android Auto picture does not automatically mean the vehicle speakers will play the sound. Decide which device will send audio before final installation.
Phone to car by Bluetooth
The phone connects directly to the vehicle’s Bluetooth system for calls and media while the tablet displays Android Auto. This can be the cleanest arrangement when the car already has a good Bluetooth receiver.

The tablet sends media audio to the car while the phone sends Android Auto data to the tablet. This may work, but call routing, microphone selection, media controls, and audio focus can become confusing.
AUX
AUX can provide predictable audio through an older stereo. Depending on the devices and adapters, you may need separate charging and audio connections. Test music and calls independently.

FM transmitter
An FM transmitter can work in cars without Bluetooth or AUX, but interference and lower sound quality are common.
If audio plays only from the tablet, check the car’s selected input, disconnect competing Bluetooth devices, and verify where Android Auto is routing media and calls. The tablet’s built-in speaker and microphone are useful for testing, but they are not guaranteed to provide good hands-free performance.

- Use a 12-volt USB charger, USB-C PD charger, or hardwired automotive USB adapter that can maintain charge under load.
- Use a short, strain-relieved cable to reduce stress on the tablet port.
- Prevent the tablet from sleeping while charging if the emulator supports that setting.
- Disable battery optimization for the emulator and, in wireless mode, the helper app.
- Keep the tablet ventilated and remove it from the vehicle during extreme heat when practical.
- Secure the mount against sudden braking and avoid airbags, sightlines, gauges, and controls.
- Test automatic startup only after manual connections are reliable.
Tasker or MacroDroid can help launch an emulator when power, Bluetooth, or a particular network is detected, but automation is optional. It adds another failure point and may be blocked by aggressive phone or tablet background restrictions.
Do not remove or modify the tablet’s battery as a casual installation step. Battery-removal projects require an appropriately designed power system and qualified installation.

Music works but calls or Assistant do not
Check the active Bluetooth call device, microphone permissions, audio routing, and the tablet’s microphone quality. A tablet can be excellent for maps and music while remaining poor for calls because of weak microphones or inadequate echo cancellation. Make a real test call while parked.
The tablet overheats or drains while plugged in
Use a higher-output vehicle charger, reduce heat and direct sunlight, improve ventilation, and check the tablet battery. If the charger cannot keep up with the screen, Wi-Fi, and processor, the battery may continue discharging despite showing a charging symbol.
What this setup cannot replace
A tablet emulator usually does not provide the integration of a properly installed head unit. Depending on the car and hardware, you may lack:

Which approach should you choose?
| Option | Best for | Main advantages | Main drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headunit Revived wired | DIY users comfortable with configuration | Open-source, USB support, current wireless documentation | More setup and variable compatibility |
| Headunit Revived Wireless Helper | Wireless users wanting automatic triggering | Wi-Fi Direct and helper-based options | Requires background permissions and a companion app |
| HUR wired | Users wanting an established paid app | USB, Wi-Fi, and Self Mode options | Paid and device-dependent |
| HUR wireless | Users unable to use OTG | No phone-to-tablet cable | Hotspot and Bluetooth setup can be inconsistent |
| Normal tablet apps | Users who do not need Android Auto | No projection link; downloaded maps can work offline | No Android Auto interface or phone integration |
| Dedicated aftermarket head unit | Daily reliability and vehicle integration | Better audio, power, controls, and mounting | Higher cost and possible installation work |
Alternatives worth considering
If the tablet is too old, lacks Google services, cannot act as a USB host, or is too dim for safe use, a portable Android Auto display may be simpler. If you need steering-wheel controls, a backup camera, factory microphones, radio control, or automatic startup, a compatible aftermarket stereo is usually the more sensible permanent solution. A normal tablet running Google Maps, Waze, and Spotify can also be adequate if you do not need Android Auto’s interface and phone integration.
For a tablet mount, prioritize secure retention, vehicle-specific fit, clear sightlines, and airbag clearance. Vendors such as RAM Mounts, iOttie, and ProClip offer relevant mounting categories, but verify current fit and pricing on their sites.
Best installation sequence
- Test the tablet, phone, and emulator indoors.
- Start with wired Headunit Revived or HUR.
- Confirm maps, music, messages, Assistant, and calls while parked.
- Choose and test the vehicle audio route.
- Add stable power and a secure mount.
- Disable battery restrictions and configure screen behavior.
- Only then experiment with Wireless Helper, hotspots, or automation.
App menus, Android Auto versions, wireless behavior, and compatibility can change. The software details above were checked against the supplied sources on August 18, 2026; consult the current Headunit Revived documentation or HUR listing if labels differ.
