Start by recording exactly what the truck is doing, then identify its model year, engine and transmission, retrieve diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), and check the VIN for recalls. A hard shift, slipping sensation, clunk or failure to change gears is a symptom—not a diagnosis. The right next step depends on the truck’s configuration and when the problem occurs.
The specific operating guidance below comes from the 2024 Ram 1500 owner’s manual and handbook. It does not automatically apply to other years or configurations.
What to do first when a Ram 1500 has a transmission problem
- Make the situation safe. If the truck has severely degraded performance, may stall, will not reliably engage a gear, or displays a warning that it may not re-engage after shutdown, stop somewhere safe and arrange professional help. Do not keep driving to see whether the problem clears.
- Record the vehicle details. Note the model year, engine, drivetrain and transmission if known. Include mileage and any recent repair or service that might help a technician understand the context.
- Write down the exact symptom and conditions. Record the dashboard message word for word, whether the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on, and whether the issue happens cold or warm, during acceleration or deceleration, while towing, or after a repair. Note whether the truck slips, shifts harshly, clunks, hesitates or stays in one gear—but do not treat any one sensation as proof of a failed transmission.
- Have the DTCs read and recorded. Ask for the actual codes and the vehicle information used to interpret them. A code can help narrow diagnosis, but a generic description or symptom alone does not establish which part has failed. Avoid clearing codes before they have been recorded.
- Check recalls and applicable service information by VIN. Confirm whether an official recall applies, and have a dealer or qualified technician check the truck’s build details, symptoms and DTCs against current service information before authorizing a repair.
Why is my Ram 1500 shifting hard, slipping or not shifting?
These descriptions can cover different behaviors, and the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a single cause or a symptom-to-code chart that applies to every Ram 1500. Diagnosis needs the exact vehicle configuration, operating conditions and DTCs.

What to do if the truck enters limp-home mode
The 2024 Ram 1500 owner’s manual describes limp-home mode as an electronically triggered protective response. It may limit the available gears or prevent shifting, severely reduce performance and potentially cause the engine to stall. The MIL may illuminate, and a message may appear in the instrument cluster. The mode indicates that the vehicle detected a problem; it does not by itself prove the transmission has failed.

Prioritize safety over a reset
If the truck is unsafe to drive, may stall, will not reliably engage a gear, or warns that the transmission may not re-engage after shutdown, stop in a safe location and seek professional assistance. The manual’s reset procedure should not be attempted somewhere the truck could be left unable to re-engage.

- Stop the vehicle and select Park if possible; otherwise, select Neutral.
- Turn the engine off and wait about 30 seconds.
- Restart the engine and select the desired range.
If the cluster warns that the transmission may not re-engage after shutdown, perform the procedure only at a desired location, preferably at an authorized dealer. If the mode clears, the manual still recommends visiting a dealer promptly so the transmission can be assessed with diagnostic equipment. If it does not clear, dealer service is required. A reset is not a repair.
How to check for a Ram 1500 transmission recall
Check the truck’s VIN using Mopar’s official recall lookup, then confirm any result with a dealer. A recall applies only to vehicles within its defined scope; the model year alone is not enough to establish eligibility.

Recall 63B / NHTSA 24V-413
Stellantis’ 2024 recall document identifies recall 63B, also designated NHTSA 24V-413, for certain 2023 Ram 1500 pickups equipped with the 8HP75 transmission. The document says an insufficient weld in the transmission control unit (TCU) could allow transmission fluid to reach electrical components, potentially causing loss of transmission control and motive power or Park function. The listed remedy is valve-body replacement.
The recall document describes about 214 potentially affected vehicles. That figure is the population covered by the recall document, not a Ram 1500 transmission failure rate. If the VIN is eligible, Mopar says the recall repair is provided at no cost. Do not assume every 2023 Ram 1500—or a truck from another year—is included.

What transmission fluid does a Ram 1500 take?
Use the fluid specification for the exact truck, not a recommendation based only on the Ram 1500 name. The 2024 Ram 1500 handbook specifies Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF or an equivalent. It warns that incorrect fluid may affect transmission function or performance. That specification is not confirmation that the same fluid suits every year or configuration.
Before buying fluid or authorizing service, check the vehicle’s own handbook or have a dealer or qualified technician verify the specification. Fluid choice is a maintenance question, not a fix to try for limp-home mode, harsh shifting or another unexplained symptom.

How to use a service bulletin without misdiagnosing the truck
A technical service bulletin (TSB) applies to defined vehicles and conditions; it is not a universal diagnosis or a recall. A 2025 TSB search result identifies valve-body replacement for a narrowly specified set of vehicles and conditions, but does not establish that the repair applies to every Ram 1500 with a shifting complaint. Have a dealer or qualified technician verify the VIN, build date, engine, transmission, symptoms and DTCs against current service information before treating a bulletin as relevant.
What to give the technician
- VIN, model year, engine and drivetrain; include the transmission if known.
- The exact instrument-cluster message and whether the MIL is illuminated.
- When the issue occurs: cold start, warm operation, acceleration, deceleration, towing, hills or another repeatable condition.
- Whether the truck slips, shifts harshly, clunks, hesitates, loses gears or fails to engage—and whether the behavior is intermittent.
- Recorded DTCs and any recent service or repair.
- Whether the VIN lookup shows a recall or whether a technician has identified a potentially applicable TSB.
These details help the technician assess the specific vehicle rather than infer a repair from a general symptom description.
