There is no verified reset sequence that applies to every GMC Terrain backup camera. Start by identifying your Terrain’s model year and checking its owner’s manual; clean the lens if the image is unclear. If the screen stays blank or blue, or a service message persists, arrange diagnosis rather than relying on a generic button hold, battery disconnect, or factory reset.
Start with the correct Terrain manual
Camera and infotainment procedures can vary by model year and equipment. GMC’s owner’s manual page lets you select the year, make, and model to find the appropriate manual. The instructions and fault clues below are specific to the years and configurations identified; do not assume they apply to every Terrain.
Try these safe checks first
- Check the view and lighting. For the 2016 Terrain, the camera is above the license plate. Mud, snow, ice, or other buildup can obscure it; darkness, direct sun, or headlamp glare can also make the image unclear. These are conditions described in the 2016 Terrain owner’s manual.
- Clean the lens gently. The 2016 manual says to rinse the lens with water and wipe it with a soft cloth. GMC’s camera guidance likewise recommends wiping away dirt, rain, or snow with a soft cloth. Avoid treating this as a reset: it only addresses a dirty lens.
- Check display settings only if overlays are the issue. On the 2016 Terrain, the manual’s path for rear-camera symbols and guide lines is Park > CONFIG > Display Settings > Rear Camera Options. These options adjust overlays; they do not repair a blank or failed camera image. Confirm the menu path in the manual for your own year.
If the screen is blank, blue, or shows a service message
Persistent service message
The 2016 manual says “SERVICE REAR VISION CAMERA SYSTEM” may appear when the system is not working properly. It advises dealer service if the problem persists. Follow the manual for your model year if you see an equivalent warning.
Black or blue screen on certain 2019–2023 Terrains
A GM preliminary information bulletin hosted by NHTSA covers North American 2019–2023 Terrain vehicles equipped with Surround Camera System UV2 or UVS, or Trailer Camera System UVI. It describes a black screen with a triangle icon when shifting into reverse. On the equipment in scope, infotainment version 3.4 shows a blue screen, while version 3.5 and later shows black. Those details apply only to the configurations covered by the GM bulletin; a similar-looking screen on another Terrain does not establish the same fault.

The bulletin lists possible causes including camera, coaxial cable, or connector failures associated with vibration; excessive resistance at coaxial cable connectors that interrupts the video signal; and an SD card that can cause surround-view system resets and intermittent black screens. Its diagnostic guidance is not an owner repair procedure, and it does not support replacing a camera, radio, or video processing module without diagnosis. GM says the bulletin’s intent is that, in most cases involving specified diagnostic codes B101E or B101D, technicians inspect coaxial connections and the SD card rather than replace the Video Processing Module or radio.
When to get service—and what to ask
If cleaning does not resolve the issue, a service warning remains, or the display repeatedly goes blank, arrange diagnosis through a GMC dealer or qualified repair facility. Give them the model year, equipment if known, what the screen displays, and when the fault occurs. On vehicles covered by the bulletin, ask the technician to follow the relevant GM diagnostic procedure and check the applicable camera, coaxial cable/connectors, and SD card before assuming a module or camera needs replacement.

Do not buy a replacement camera as a general reset remedy. If diagnosis confirms the camera itself has failed, verify compatibility using the vehicle’s VIN, model year, trim, and equipment; the sources cited here do not establish a universal part number or aftermarket fitment. GMC’s manuals and service resources can help identify the applicable service path, and some parts or accessories may require installation by authorized Certified Service.

Even when it works, the rear camera does not show every area behind the Terrain. GMC warns that small children or pedestrians may be outside the image, including close to the bumper corners, under the bumper, or beyond the camera’s field of view. Check the area directly and use the mirrors before reversing.
