Some car coverage can remain with a vehicle after it changes hands, but there is no universal transfer process. The next step depends on whether the coverage is a factory warranty, certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty, dealer warranty, or separately purchased service contract. Check the documents and ask the responsible company to verify coverage for the vehicle identification number (VIN) before relying on it.
First, identify what kind of coverage the car has
Ask the seller to specify the coverage and provide its documents. A factory warranty, CPO warranty, dealer warranty, and paid service contract may have different transfer rules. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that a service contract is separate from a warranty included in the vehicle price, even if it is marketed as an “extended warranty.” FTC: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts
- Manufacturer warranty: Coverage from the automaker for specified defects or malfunctions, for a stated time or mileage limit, whichever comes first. Read the actual warranty for its terms.
- CPO warranty: Additional coverage associated with a certified pre-owned program. Its transfer rules may differ from the factory warranty.
- Dealer warranty: Coverage provided by the selling dealer. The FTC says a full warranty covers anyone who owns the car during its warranty period; a limited warranty may have narrower terms. Check the written warranty and the dealer’s Buyers Guide rather than relying on a verbal description. FTC: Buying a Used Car From a Dealer
- Paid service contract: A separate agreement with its own covered repairs, exclusions, claim process, and transfer provisions. Its terms—not the factory warranty’s terms—govern whether it can transfer.
How to check and complete a transfer
- Get the VIN and coverage paperwork. Request the warranty booklet or service contract, sale paperwork, coverage start date and mileage, and any transfer instructions. The FTC recommends obtaining warranty documents and contacting the dealership with the VIN to confirm what is covered, how much time or mileage remains, and what paperwork is needed. - Contact the company responsible for the coverage. For a factory or CPO warranty, contact the automaker or an authorized dealer; for dealer coverage, contact the dealer; for a service contract, contact its administrator. Ask them to check the VIN and confirm whether coverage remains active after this sale.
- Ask about transfer conditions. Confirm who must submit paperwork, whether there is a fee or deadline, whether the new owner must register, and whether the transfer affects any coverage. Policies can differ even among manufacturer-backed programs.
- Confirm the terms in writing. Request the current status, remaining term or mileage, covered components, transfer completion, and claim instructions. For a service contract, confirm in writing that it is in effect and follow the contract’s process for authorizing repairs.
- Keep the records. Save the VIN-specific confirmation, warranty or contract, transfer receipt, and maintenance records. A service contract may require maintenance in line with its recommendations; receipts and records can help document that work.
Why the exact warranty terms matter
Official manufacturer examples show that transfer fees and steps are program-specific. The following are examples of published policies, not rules for other brands or contracts:

These examples apply only to the programs and terms described by each manufacturer. They do not establish a rule for another make, model, warranty year, country, or paid service contract. Have the relevant company verify the exact vehicle and coverage.

If the coverage is a paid service contract
Read the contract’s transfer, fee, deadline, cancellation, and claim terms. Also check which repairs are covered, exclusions and deductibles, where repairs may be performed, and whether the service contract overlaps with remaining factory coverage. The FTC recommends comparing these details when considering a service contract. FTC: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts
If you are selling, do not describe a service contract as transferable until its administrator confirms that the contract allows it. If it cannot transfer, ask whether cancellation or a refund is available under the contract; neither is guaranteed. The FTC advises consumers to check transferability, fees, and cancellation terms.

What to do if a seller says the warranty transfers
Ask for the coverage documents and verify the claim directly with the automaker, dealer, or contract administrator using the VIN. A seller’s description alone does not establish that coverage is active or that a transfer is complete. If the company requires a form, registration, fee, or action by a particular owner, follow those instructions and keep proof of completion.
