For fog on the inside of your car windows, use the vehicle’s defogger first: direct airflow to the glass, switch off recirculation, increase the fan and turn on the air conditioning if available. For recurring interior fog, an anti-fog treatment such as Rain-X Anti-Fog is an optional aid—follow its current label. No independent head-to-head test in the reviewed sources establishes one product as the best, and a treatment does not replace the defroster.
First identify which side of the glass is fogged
Fog is condensation: moisture forms on glass when conditions at its surface and in the surrounding air allow it. It can appear on either the inside or outside of a window, and the appropriate response depends on which side is affected. If you cannot tell, carefully wipe a small area from inside the car; if the fog remains, it is likely outside.
For inside fog, start with the cabin climate controls. For outside fog, wipers may help, and changing the cabin cooling settings may be appropriate. If visibility is impaired, slow down and pull over somewhere safe if you cannot clear the glass promptly.
How to clear fog on the inside of car windows
Use the vehicle’s defog or defrost setting
Choose Defog/Defrost, or Max Defrost if your vehicle has it, and direct airflow toward the windshield. Turn recirculation off, raise the fan and use air conditioning when available. Chevrolet’s vehicle-support instructions state: “If defogging, turn the A/C to On.” SAAQ, Quebec’s road-safety agency, also recommends air conditioning for defogging the windshield and side and rear windows, noting that conditioned air is drier. Clear snow and ice from the windshield and rear window before setting off. Once the glass is clear, Chevrolet suggests recirculation off, airflow to the windshield and floor, a medium fan and a warmer temperature to help maintain clear glass. Control names and behavior vary by vehicle, so follow your owner’s manual.
If the glass keeps fogging while you drive
Keep fresh air flowing rather than recirculating damp cabin air, and leave airflow directed toward the windshield. Wet clothing, snow brought into the cabin and moisture on floor mats can add humidity; remove water and snow when practical. If the defogger does not clear the glass, check your manual for the correct settings and make sure vents are not blocked.

What to do when the fog is on the outside
Exterior fog can occur in warm, humid conditions when the outside glass is cooler than the surrounding air. Nissan’s manufacturer-affiliated guidance suggests using the wipers, reducing or switching off the A/C, turning off recirculation and briefly opening a window if needed. These are not universal settings for every climate-control system; identify the fogged side and consult your vehicle manual. See Nissan’s guidance for fog in rain or humidity.
Do you need an automatic defog system?
Some vehicles detect moisture on the inside of the windshield and automatically adjust climate controls. Hyundai owner manuals show that, on specified models, the system can switch on A/C, select outside air and defrost airflow, and increase fan speed when humidity is high. The described behavior and available controls depend on model and year; one 2025 Hyundai manual says operation may be impaired below 14°F (-10°C). Is an anti-fog spray worth using?
A defogger clears current condensation by changing airflow and cabin conditions. A topical anti-fog product is marketed to help reduce future fogging on a specified surface. Rain-X identifies Rain-X Anti-Fog as a product for interior glass and mirrors; it is a reasonable optional treatment for recurring interior fog, not a substitute for the vehicle’s defroster. The recommendation is the brand’s, not the result of an independent product comparison. Check the Rain-X FAQ and follow the current package directions.
Do not assume a treatment is compatible with every tint, coating, sensor area or glass surface. Use it only where the current label permits. Anti-fog coatings are not the same as sprays
Some anti-fog coatings are incorporated into automotive glass during production. Pilkington describes such a coating and says its treated glass can stay clear up to 45 minutes longer than untreated glass. That is the glass supplier’s claim about its coating; it is not an independent comparison of consumer sprays and should not be treated as a general performance promise.
