To schedule BMW i4 charging, open the My BMW App with your i4 selected, go to Charging > Charge & Climate settings > Charge & Climate Timer, choose a charging mode and departure time, then tap Update in My BMW. For off-peak charging, choose Charge in time frame; it sets a preferred AC charging window, not a guaranteed shutoff time.
Set a charging schedule and departure time in the My BMW App
- Select your vehicle: Open the My BMW App and make sure the connected BMW i4 is selected.
- Open charging settings: Go to Charging, then Charge & Climate settings. Adjust the charge target as needed; charging stops when the target is reached.
- Set the timer: Open Charge & Climate Timer, choose a charging mode, and set the time the car should be ready to leave.
- Choose a recurring or one-off departure: Set usual departure times by weekday, or use the one-off timer for today to override the weekly timer.
- Send the settings: Tap Update in My BMW to send your changes to the vehicle.
BMW describes the departure time as a readiness time: the car plans charging toward the selected target and can prepare the cabin for that time. The app workflow and timer options are documented in BMW USA’s My BMW App instructions.

Choose between immediate charging and an off-peak window

To schedule off-peak charging, select Charge in time frame in Charge & Climate Timer, then enter the preferred period. BMW says this is a preference rather than an exclusive window: if the period is too short to reach the target by departure, the i4 may charge outside it. Set a practical charge target and prepare the cabin
BMW USA says an 80% charge target typically covers daily driving, while charging to 100% is available for an upcoming trip but is not recommended every day. BMW’s broader battery guidance recommends 10–80% for ordinary use and charging to 100% for longer trips shortly before departure. If you enable departure-time climate conditioning, BMW recommends preconditioning while the car is plugged in when possible. That lets the vehicle draw energy from the outlet rather than using as much energy from its high-voltage battery. See BMW’s climate-timer guidance.
Check the charging plan and understand unexpected charging
After sending the schedule, open the app’s charging plan. BMW says it shows current charging status, the target, and the estimated time the high-voltage battery will reach that target. Use the estimate to see how the plan is progressing, not as a guaranteed completion time. See BMW’s charging-plan instructions.

- Charging continues outside your preferred window: This can be normal if the vehicle needs more time to reach the target by departure or needs energy for departure-time climate conditioning.
- Charging starts briefly after plug-in: BMW says the vehicle may be calculating whether the preferred period is long enough to meet the target.
- The estimate or status is unclear: Check the charging plan in the app for the current status, target, and estimated target time.

Do you need a BMW Wallbox to use the timer?
No. The timer is a software setting in the My BMW App; BMW does not require a BMW Wallbox just to configure it. A Wallbox is optional home AC charging equipment. BMW USA’s FAQ lists a $600 MSRP for the Wallbox, and says installation cost varies; check current US pricing and local installer availability before buying. App labels and in-car controls can vary
The steps above reflect BMW USA’s published app workflow. Menu names and available controls may differ with i4 model year, market, and software. The cited instructions do not establish one universal iDrive path for every i4. If your app or vehicle menus differ, consult the manual matched to your car.
ChargeForward is a separate smart-charging program, not another name for the ordinary Charge & Climate Timer. Its charging plan can use target state of charge, departure time, and applicable utility or grid information; enrollment and incentives depend on location. See BMW’s ChargeForward information.
