How much car can you afford?
Your affordability limit is the amount left after essential expenses, existing obligations and other financial priorities—not a universal percentage of income. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends making a monthly spending plan before deciding what loan amount you can manage. Include take-home income and regular as well as irregular expenses so a car payment does not crowd out necessities or savings goals.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this sequence to find a safe monthly limit:
- Write down take-home income.
- Subtract housing, food, utilities, family commitments, debt payments and other essential spending.
- Account for savings goals and irregular costs that do not arrive every month.
- Decide what remaining amount can go toward all car expenses, not just the loan payment.
There is no single payment or income rule that fits every buyer. Your safe amount depends on your bills, savings, other goals and the costs of the vehicle you are considering.

What costs should you include when buying a used car?
Budget for both the amount needed to buy the car and the costs of keeping it. A sticker price leaves out charges due at purchase, while a loan payment leaves out most running costs.
Purchase-day costs
- Vehicle price
- Applicable state and local taxes
- Title and registration charges
- Dealer fees and any optional add-ons you choose
- Down payment and trade-in value, which reduce the amount you need to finance
Ask the seller for a written out-the-door price that itemizes the total. Do not assume every dealer charge is government-mandated: taxes, title and registration are distinct from dealer fees, and optional products should be included only if you choose them. Rules and charges vary by location.

Ongoing costs

- Fuel: Estimate using your expected annual mileage, the car’s fuel use and local fuel prices.
- Registration: Include recurring charges where applicable, averaged over the period you are budgeting for.
- Maintenance and repairs: Allow for routine service and likely repairs, informed by the car’s condition and an independent mechanic’s assessment.
- Other driving costs: Add parking and tolls if they apply to your regular use.
There is no defensible universal dollar amount for these costs in the reviewed guidance. Use quotes and estimates specific to your location, vehicle and driving rather than treating a national average as your likely bill.

How should you compare used-car loan offers?
Compare the complete financing cost, not just the installment. For each offer, record the annual percentage rate (APR), amount financed, term, monthly payment, total payments and total interest. A longer term can make the payment smaller while increasing the total cost of borrowing.

How do an inspection and vehicle history affect your budget?
Before setting a final price ceiling, arrange an independent mechanical inspection and request a written report with estimated repair costs. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises that a vehicle-history report does not replace a mechanical inspection. Even a dealer-certified or dealer-inspected car may warrant an independent check.

How do you set a final price ceiling?
Work backward from your safe monthly car budget and your cash available at purchase. First reserve room for insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration and other regular driving expenses. The remainder is the most you can devote to a loan payment without exceeding your household limit. Then compare real loan offers to see what financed amount and purchase price fit that payment over a term whose total cost you accept.
At purchase, calculate the amount to finance as the written out-the-door total less your down payment and trade-in value. Do not use all available cash as a down payment if doing so would leave you without money for essential expenses or repairs. Keep a repair reserve sized to your savings, the car’s age and condition, and the mechanic’s estimate; official guidance does not prescribe a universal reserve amount.
How can you compare two used cars fairly?
Compare the vehicles separately from their financing offers. A cheaper advertised price or lower payment may be offset by repairs, insurance or fuel costs.
| Compare the vehicles | Compare the financing |
|---|---|
| Written out-the-door price | APR |
| Inspection findings and near-term repair estimate | Amount financed |
| Insurance quote | Term |
| Expected fuel use and annual mileage | Monthly payment |
| Maintenance and repair expectations | Total payments and total interest |
| Likely resale value |
Edmunds’ five-year total cost of ownership (TCO) estimates include depreciation, financing interest, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs. Its comparison assumes 15,000 miles of driving per year and is not a prediction of your personal costs; actual expenses vary with location, vehicle and use. Treat such estimates as a way to compare candidates, then replace assumptions with your own quotes and expected mileage. See Edmunds’ TCO methodology.
Used-car budget worksheet

|---|---|
| Cash available at purchase | Down payment, trade-in value and cash you can use without compromising essential needs or a repair reserve |

| Amount financed | Out-the-door total less down payment and trade-in value |
| Financing offers | APR, term, installment, total payments and total interest for each offer |

Use the CFPB comparison sheet for purchase and loan rows, then add the vehicle-specific operating and inspection costs above. Verify taxes, title, registration, warranty and return rules with the relevant state or seller; they differ by location and transaction type.
