Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with your vehicle identification number (VIN): use Hyundai’s or Kia’s official eligibility checker, then ask an authorized dealer to confirm every free anti-theft measure available for your vehicle. For eligible U.S.-market cars, a software upgrade or ignition-cylinder protector may help address a vulnerability, but neither makes a vehicle theft-proof. Lock the car with its key fob, take the key, and consider a steering wheel lock as an extra visible barrier.
Start by checking your VIN—not just the model year
Anti-theft campaign eligibility depends on the specific vehicle. A model year or ignition type can tell you whether to investigate, but it does not replace a VIN check. The cited manufacturer programs and settlement information are U.S.-specific; do not assume they apply to vehicles sold in other countries.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The VIN lookup is the practical first step because the available measures are not identical for every Hyundai or Kia. A broad model-year range may help you decide to check, but it cannot tell you conclusively whether your particular vehicle qualifies for software, an ignition-cylinder protector, or another campaign. Do not stop after seeing a general article or hearing that a similar car is eligible. Use the official tool for your make and then ask an authorized dealer to interpret the result for your vehicle.
Hyundai
Hyundai says vehicles with push-button start or produced after November 2021 have an engine immobilizer. Owners of vehicles with a turn-key ignition should enter the VIN using Hyundai’s official anti-theft guidance to check whether the software upgrade applies. If the checker is unclear, ask an authorized Hyundai dealer to verify the VIN and any available hardware campaign.

Kia
Kia provides a VIN lookup for its anti-theft software and ignition-cylinder protector eligibility through its Anti-Theft Support Actions page. Check both measures rather than assuming that software eligibility answers the hardware question too. Kia’s support page describes separate eligibility checks, so a result about one measure should not be treated as a definitive answer about the other.
What to have ready
- Your 17-character VIN, usually visible at the base of the windshield or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.
- The make, model, model year, and ignition type, to help the dealer discuss the result.
- Any manufacturer notice or prior installation record. If you bought the car used, ask the dealer to confirm whether a campaign was completed.
Save the eligibility result and any appointment or installation paperwork. Those records can matter if you later need to show that a measure was installed or scheduled. If you have moved, bought the vehicle secondhand, or cannot find a notice, the VIN remains the useful reference point: contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer rather than relying on the previous owner’s recollection.
When checking, keep track of the exact questions and answers: whether the VIN is eligible for software, whether a protector applies, whether an earlier campaign is already recorded as complete, and whether any additional measure is available through a later notice or settlement. Eligibility, parts availability, and installation timing can vary by vehicle. A web lookup is a starting point, not a promise that a part is immediately available or that a claim will be approved.
Ask an authorized dealer about every free campaign measure
Hyundai and Kia announced free theft-deterrent software for eligible vehicles. Kia also describes an ignition-cylinder protector for vehicles that are not eligible for its software upgrade. A 2025 multistate settlement announcement adds another potential route: an authorized dealer is to offer a free zinc-reinforced ignition-cylinder protector to eligible vehicles, including some that had previously been eligible only for software. Which measure applies, and when it can be installed, depends on the vehicle and the applicable notice.
When you call, ask the dealer to check the VIN for all open anti-theft campaigns, explain whether the car qualifies for software, a protector, or both, and confirm parts availability and appointment timing. Ask for written confirmation of the work performed and retain the repair order. Do not buy a lookalike ignition-cylinder part on the assumption that it is the campaign hardware; use the manufacturer’s VIN process and authorized installation route.
There is an important cost distinction: the manufacturer campaign measures described here are free for eligible vehicles, while a steering wheel lock is an optional accessory if you cannot obtain one free locally. No standard price for a purchased lock is established here, and no particular brand is supported. Ask whether a manufacturer or local law-enforcement agency has a free device before paying for one. For campaign software or a cylinder protector, ask the authorized dealer to confirm both eligibility and the terms of the free installation; do not assume an unrelated repair or accessory is covered.
Ask the service adviser to distinguish a completed measure from a scheduled one. If parts are unavailable or the appointment is later, request documentation showing what the dealer checked and what remains to be done. Keep the notice, appointment confirmation, repair order, and any proof of installation together with your vehicle records. These documents help you answer later questions about campaign status, but they do not by themselves establish eligibility for compensation; claim terms may separately consider the event date, expenses, and other conditions.

The scale of the issue varies by place. In 2025, the District of Columbia Office of the Attorney General said nearly 8,200 Kia and Hyundai vehicles registered in DC were at elevated theft risk: 2,560 Kias and 5,638 Hyundais were identified as eligible for installation in the District. Those figures describe DC registrations, not the national vehicle population.
DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb urged eligible owners to act: “I strongly encourage everyone who is eligible to schedule installation of these devices as soon as possible.” The recommendation is to check and schedule promptly, not to assume that every vehicle is eligible or that every location has immediate parts or appointment availability.
Know what the software upgrade changes—and what it does not
NHTSA described the upgrade as extending the vehicle alarm from 30 seconds to one minute and requiring the ignition key to start the car. Kia says its upgrade restricts unauthorized ignition operation on locked vehicles and instructs owners to lock with the key fob to activate the alarm and security software. Follow the activation instructions provided for your specific vehicle and confirm with the dealer that the upgrade was installed correctly.
For Kia owners in particular, locking method is part of the operating instructions, not a detail to overlook. Kia says to use the key fob to lock the vehicle so its alarm and security software activate. Build that into your routine after the upgrade and verify the doors are locked before leaving. If you are uncertain whether the update was installed or how it should behave, ask the dealer to review the repair record and explain the instructions for your vehicle rather than inferring status from the alarm sound or from another model’s behavior.
The software changes alarm and ignition behavior, but the described upgrade is not a universal hardware immobilizer retrofit. It should not be described as a physical lock or as a guarantee against all theft methods. Even if the vehicle is eligible and the software is installed, continue to lock it, take the key or fob, avoid leaving it running, and use other practical precautions. Security measures work as layers: the update addresses a specific vulnerability, while daily habits and an optional visible deterrent can make the vehicle a less convenient target.
If your VIN is not eligible for software, that does not automatically mean there is no available measure. Ask whether a Kia ignition-cylinder protector or another applicable manufacturer measure is available. The 2025 settlement announcement also describes a free zinc-reinforced protector for eligible vehicles, including some previously eligible only for software. The VIN and applicable notice determine whether it applies; do not assume that every vehicle without a software upgrade qualifies for the protector.
Build a routine that reduces easy opportunities
These habits apply whether or not a campaign measure is available. They do not guarantee that a vehicle will not be stolen, but they reduce avoidable exposure. The point is consistency: do the simple steps every time, rather than only when parking in an unfamiliar place or after hearing about a theft nearby.

- Gift-Ready Choice for Drivers: A steering wheel lock makes a practical present for someone who takes pride in their car and values everyday peace of mind. It is one of those useful car gifts that feels thoughtful without being overly personal. Whether you are shopping for car accessories for men, locks with keys, or a small lock with real everyday value, this is a simple gift that can be appreciated long after the occasion.
- Lock with the key fob. Kia specifically says to use the fob so the alarm and security software activate. Verify the doors locked before walking away.
- Take the key or fob with you. Never leave a spare key in or near the vehicle.
- Do not leave the car running unattended. A brief errand is still an opportunity for theft.
- Choose a well-lit place or a garage when practical. Prefer visible, busy parking over isolated locations.
- Remove USB cables when not in use. Kia includes this precaution in its guidance; visible cables can draw attention to the vehicle.
These actions are useful even if you have already received the software upgrade or protector. A completed campaign does not remove the need to take the key, secure the doors, and avoid leaving the vehicle unattended while running. Nor should owners treat a steering wheel lock as permission to leave keys inside or the car unlocked. Each layer has a limited purpose; no one measure eliminates risk.

If another household member uses the vehicle, make sure that person knows the same routine, especially the instruction to lock with the fob where Kia’s software applies. No separate checklist for remote start or other equipment is provided here, so follow the vehicle-specific manual and the manufacturer’s campaign instructions for any details beyond these core precautions.
Consider a steering wheel lock as a visible extra barrier
A steering wheel lock is an optional physical layer, not a substitute for a manufacturer campaign measure. NHTSA reported that Hyundai and Kia had distributed more than 26,000 wheel locks through 77 law-enforcement agencies in 12 states since November 2022, as of its February 2023 announcement. That is a historical distribution figure, not a count of devices currently available. The District of Columbia insurance regulator has also advised affected owners to consider a wheel lock or other anti-theft device.
Before purchasing one, ask the manufacturer or local police whether free devices are available and confirm that any lock you choose fits your vehicle. Availability varies by location. A lock may make theft less convenient or more conspicuous, but it cannot guarantee protection.
When comparing choices, focus on what the available information can establish: whether you can obtain a device free, whether a purchased lock fits your vehicle, and whether you are willing to use it whenever you park. Available information does not rank aftermarket brands, test products, or identify a superior model. Do not treat an online product listing or a generic anti-theft label as proof that a device replaces manufacturer campaign hardware.

It is campaign hardware installed through an authorized dealer for eligible vehicles, while the wheel lock is a separate removable accessory used by the owner. If the VIN check indicates that a protector may apply, ask the dealer about that route rather than attempting to buy a similar-looking part yourself. If you buy a steering lock, confirm fit before purchase and use it as an added layer, not as a substitute for a free campaign installation.
Compare the measures by eligibility and purpose
The practical comparison is not simply “which device is best.” Start with whether your VIN qualifies, then distinguish the manufacturer-installed measure from an optional accessory and from everyday precautions. The following measures have different costs, activation requirements, and limits.

| Measure | What it does | How to check or obtain it | Cost and key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-theft software | For eligible vehicles, changes alarm and ignition behavior; Kia says the vehicle must be locked and the key fob used to activate the security software. | Check the Hyundai or Kia VIN tool, then arrange installation through an authorized dealer. | Free for eligible vehicles under the announced campaign. Eligibility is VIN-specific; it is not a universal immobilizer retrofit and does not prevent every theft. |
| Ignition-cylinder protector | Physical protection for the ignition cylinder on eligible vehicles; the 2025 settlement announcement describes a zinc-reinforced protector. | Check the Kia VIN tool and ask an authorized dealer about applicable free installation, including settlement-related eligibility. | Free for eligible vehicles under the applicable offer. Availability and eligibility depend on the vehicle and notice; do not substitute an unverified part. |
| Steering wheel lock | A visible, removable physical deterrent. | Ask the manufacturer or local law enforcement about free availability; otherwise confirm fit before buying. | Free devices may be available in some places; a purchased lock is optional and has no supported standard price here. Local inventory varies, and it is not a replacement for campaign measures. |
| Everyday precautions | Reduce opportunities by locking, taking the key, parking thoughtfully, and removing unused cables. | Apply each time the vehicle is parked. | No campaign eligibility is required, but helpful habits are not a theft guarantee. |
For an owner deciding what to do first, this order follows the evidence: confirm eligibility with the manufacturer, schedule any applicable free dealer measure, then check locally for a free steering wheel lock. If buying an optional lock, verify its fit and understand that no source here supports a brand ranking. Finally, follow the same parking routine whether or not any device is available. This sequence avoids spending money on an optional accessory before learning whether a free, VIN-based measure applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If your vehicle was stolen, damaged, or targeted
Keep the police report, repair invoices, receipts, campaign notices, and proof of installation or scheduled work. Before filing for compensation, check the current settlement terms and confirm that your vehicle, event date, expenses, and campaign status qualify. The DC Attorney General’s 2025 announcement describes up to $4.5 million in consumer restitution under the multistate settlement and says eligible consumers whose vehicle was stolen or had an attempted theft after April 29, 2025 may file for certain expenses. The announcement separately identifies $4.5 million for the multistate coalition’s investigation costs; that is not additional consumer restitution.
The restitution announcement is not a promise that every affected owner will receive payment. The event must fall within the relevant rules, and the expenses must be among those the applicable process accepts. Keep receipts and records, but check the current claim instructions before assuming an expense qualifies. The consumer restitution amount is “up to” $4.5 million; it should not be read as a guaranteed individual award or as the separate $4.5 million allocated for the coalition’s investigation costs.
Hyundai’s campaign and consumer compensation page states a March 31, 2027 claim deadline for the compensation pathway it describes, subject to conditions. Kia also describes possible settlement reimbursements, including for certain theft-prevention devices. Deadlines, qualifying expenses, and eligibility are pathway-specific; check the applicable administrator or manufacturer instructions before relying on reimbursement.
If a theft attempt occurred, preserve information about the date and resulting damage, and contact the relevant manufacturer or settlement administrator for the current process. If you have not yet completed an applicable software or hardware measure, ask the dealer about eligibility and timing as well. The fact that a vehicle was targeted does not alone establish that the incident or any expense qualifies for reimbursement. Hyundai’s March 31, 2027 date applies to the compensation pathway described on its campaign page; do not assume it is the deadline for every Kia or multistate settlement claim.
Insurance rules are also location-specific. The District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking provides information for DC consumers affected by these thefts. Its protections should not be treated as universal rules for other states. Contact your own insurer and state insurance regulator about coverage, documentation, and any local protections.

Where to get help
- Use Hyundai’s official VIN eligibility guidance or Kia’s anti-theft support page.
- Ask an authorized dealer to confirm eligible campaigns, installation status, parts, and appointment timing.
- Ask local law enforcement whether free steering wheel locks remain available in your area.
- For a theft or attempted-theft expense claim, follow the current manufacturer or settlement-administrator instructions; do not assume an expense will be reimbursed.
Use the source that matches the question: the manufacturer VIN tool for vehicle-specific eligibility, the dealer for campaign status and installation, local law enforcement for possible free locks, and the appropriate administrator or manufacturer for claim rules. If the vehicle is outside the United States, seek guidance from the local manufacturer rather than assuming the U.S. campaigns described here apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether my Hyundai or Kia is eligible for the anti-theft update?
Enter the VIN in the official Hyundai or Kia eligibility tool and ask an authorized dealer to confirm the result and any other available campaign measures. Model year alone is not a definitive eligibility check.
Do all Hyundai and Kia vehicles need the software update?
No. Hyundai says vehicles with push-button start or produced after November 2021 have an engine immobilizer; turn-key owners should use Hyundai’s VIN check. Kia also provides VIN-based eligibility checks. Do not assume that every vehicle or every model year is affected.
Recommended Free Tools
Does the software make my vehicle theft-proof?
No. NHTSA described the upgrade as extending the alarm from 30 seconds to one minute and requiring the ignition key to start the car. Kia says its software restricts unauthorized ignition operation on locked vehicles and should be activated by locking with the key fob. It is not a universal hardware immobilizer retrofit or a guarantee against theft.
Is the anti-theft campaign installation free?
The announced manufacturer software measures are free for eligible vehicles. The 2025 settlement announcement also describes a free zinc-reinforced ignition-cylinder protector for eligible vehicles. Confirm eligibility and installation terms with the manufacturer and an authorized dealer.
Should I get a steering wheel lock if my car has the software update?
It can be an additional visible, physical deterrent, but it does not replace software or campaign hardware. Ask the manufacturer or local law enforcement whether free locks are available; if buying one, confirm it fits your vehicle.
Can I claim reimbursement after a theft or attempted theft?
Possibly, depending on the vehicle, event date, expenses, campaign status, and applicable claim rules. The DC Attorney General’s 2025 announcement describes eligible claims for theft or attempted theft after April 29, 2025, and Hyundai lists March 31, 2027 for the compensation pathway on its campaign page. Check the current terms; neither date nor announcement guarantees reimbursement.

The Bottom Line
Check your Hyundai or Kia by VIN, then have an authorized dealer confirm every applicable free measure and installation status. Use the key fob as instructed, take the key, and keep up basic parking precautions. A steering wheel lock may add a visible barrier, but no measure guarantees protection; check current claim rules before expecting reimbursement.
