How To Reset The Maintenance Light On A Toyota Tacoma

Toyota Tacoma maintenance-light reset steps vary by year. Learn when to use ODO, Trip A, Maintenance Reset, Scheduled Maintenance, and Oil Maintenance.

Reset the Toyota Tacoma maintenance light only after completing the service it represents. The procedure is different on older trucks with a physical trip-meter button, 2016–2023 models with steering-wheel controls, and 2024-and-newer Tacomas with separate scheduled-maintenance and oil-maintenance menus.

You do not need an OBD-II scanner for the Toyota-documented reset procedures. Use the section matching your Tacoma’s model year and instrument cluster.

Before resetting the maintenance light

The maintenance reminder is a mileage-based service reminder. It does not confirm that the oil was changed, fluids were checked, or other scheduled work was completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On older U.S.-market Tacomas, Toyota describes the reminder as appearing at about 4,500 miles after the previous reset and remaining on at approximately 5,000 miles. A normal maintenance reminder is not the same thing as a check-engine, oil-pressure, ABS, or brake warning.

2005–2010 Tacoma: reset with the trip-meter knob

These trucks use the physical trip-meter reset knob. Toyota’s 2005 procedure requires the odometer display—not Trip A or Trip B.

  1. Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON. Do not start the engine.
  2. Press the trip-meter knob until the display shows the total odometer mileage.
  3. Turn the key to OFF.
  4. Press and hold the trip-meter reset knob.
  5. While continuing to hold the knob, turn the key back to ON. Do not start the engine.
  6. Keep holding the knob for at least five seconds.
  7. Release the knob after the display shows 000000 and the maintenance light turns off.

If the display does not reset to “000000,” the procedure did not complete and the light can continue flashing.

2011–2015 Tacoma: reset from Trip A

The 2011–2015 procedure looks similar, but the required display is different. You must select Trip meter A before turning the ignition off. Selecting ODO instead is a common reason the reset fails.

ODO versus Trip A: the year-specific difference

Tacoma model years Display required before reset Reset control
2005–2010 Odometer Trip-meter reset knob
2011–2015 Trip meter A ODO/TRIP button

Do not apply the Trip A instruction to every 2005–2015 Tacoma. Toyota’s documented procedures differ between these groups.

2016–2023 Tacoma: use the steering-wheel display

On these Tacomas, the reset is performed through the multi-information display rather than a trip-meter button.

  1. Turn the vehicle to ON with the engine off.
  2. Use the meter-control switches on the steering wheel to select the Settings display.
  3. Select Maintenance Reset.
  4. Select YES.
  5. Press the confirmation button.

The menu path is:

Settings → Maintenance Reset → YES

Menu wording and screen appearance can vary slightly by equipment and model year, but the 2020 Tacoma owner’s manual identifies this path as the Toyota procedure.

2024 and newer Tacoma: choose the correct reset

Fourth-generation Tacomas have two separate functions. Use Scheduled Maintenance for the general service reminder and Oil Maintenance after an engine-oil service. Resetting one does not necessarily reset the other.

What the Tacoma maintenance messages mean

Most maintenance reminders are not fault codes. They tell you that a mileage-based service interval is approaching or has been reached.

Message or indicator Meaning
MAINT REQD Routine maintenance reminder on older Tacomas.
OIL MAINTENANCE REQUIRED Oil-service reminder on applicable models.
Maintenance Required Soon Scheduled maintenance is approaching, approximately 4,500 miles after the last reset on the 2024 Tacoma.
Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer The scheduled interval has been reached, approximately 5,000 miles after the last reset on the 2024 Tacoma.
Oil Maintenance Required Soon or Oil Maintenance Required The engine-oil service reminder.
Engine Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer A possible engine or engine-component malfunction, not merely a routine service reminder.

If the maintenance light will not reset

  1. Check the display mode. Use ODO for the 2005–2010 procedure and Trip A for 2011–2015 trucks.
  2. Do not start the engine during the button sequence. The ignition should be in ON with the engine off.
  3. Hold the physical button long enough. On button-operated models, keep holding until “000000” appears. Releasing the knob or button early interrupts the reset.
  4. Select the exact menu function. On newer trucks, choose Maintenance Reset, Scheduled Maintenance, or Oil Maintenance as appropriate.
  5. Check for other warnings. A check-engine, oil-pressure, brake, ABS, or engine-malfunction warning requires diagnosis rather than a routine reset.

If the correct procedure still does not work, compare the steps with the owner’s manual for the exact model year and instrument cluster. A replacement instrument cluster, a failed switch, or a communication fault may require further inspection.

Common incorrect advice

  • “The light turns off automatically after an oil change.” It does not. The reminder must be reset manually after service.
  • “Every Tacoma uses Trip A.” Incorrect. The 2005 procedure calls for the odometer, while the 2011–2015 procedure calls for Trip A.
  • “You need an OBD-II scanner.” Toyota’s documented procedures use the trip-meter button or steering-wheel meter controls.
  • “The maintenance light is the check-engine light.” These are separate. The maintenance reminder tracks scheduled service; engine-malfunction warnings indicate a possible fault.

FAQ

Can I reset the Tacoma maintenance light without an OBD-II scanner?

Yes. Toyota’s documented procedures use the trip-meter reset control on older Tacomas and the steering-wheel meter controls or instrument-cluster menus on newer models.

Why will my 2011–2015 Tacoma maintenance light not reset?

Make sure Trip meter A is displayed before turning the ignition off. Using the ODO display instead of Trip A is a frequent cause of a failed reset. Also keep holding the ODO/TRIP button until “000000” appears.

Should I reset Scheduled Maintenance or Oil Maintenance on a 2024 Tacoma?

Use Oil Maintenance after an oil change. Use Scheduled Maintenance for the general scheduled-service reminder. The 2024 Tacoma lists these as separate reset functions.

Is the Tacoma maintenance light the same as the check-engine light?

No. The maintenance light is normally a mileage-based service reminder. A check-engine light or a message such as “Engine Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer” can indicate a malfunction and should be diagnosed.

The Bottom Line

Use the procedure for your Tacoma’s year and cluster: ODO plus the trip-meter knob on 2005–2010 trucks, Trip A plus the ODO/TRIP button on 2011–2015 models, Settings → Maintenance Reset on 2016–2023 trucks, and the appropriate Scheduled Maintenance or Oil Maintenance menu on 2024-and-newer Tacomas. Reset it only after the required service is complete.
