How to Reduce Headlight Glare From Oncoming Traffic

Look toward the lower-right road edge instead of staring into oncoming headlights. Clean your glass, check your own lights, avoid tinted lenses at night, and seek an eye exam if glare persists or affects your vision.

When oncoming headlights cause glare, do not stare into them: shift your gaze toward the lower-right edge of the road or its lane marking while continuing to watch the roadway. Before driving, clean the inside and outside of your windshield and mirrors, check your own lights, and arrange an aim inspection if they appear misaligned. Do not wear sunglasses or tinted lenses at night. If glare is persistent or you are also struggling to see signs, lane markings, or other road users, seek an eye-care assessment.

What to do when headlights approach

As an oncoming vehicle nears, avoid looking directly at its headlights. NHTSA advises shifting your gaze to the lower-right side of the road; AAA also recommends avoiding a direct look at the lamps. Use the road edge or lane marking as a visual reference, and keep monitoring the roadway and traffic.

  1. Notice the approaching vehicle without fixing your eyes on its headlights.
  2. Move your gaze toward the lower-right road edge or lane marking.
  3. Continue tracking your lane and the traffic around you. Do not close your eyes, look entirely away from the road, or make a sudden maneuver to escape the light.
  4. Once the vehicle has passed and the glare eases, return your gaze to the normal forward view.

This technique gives you a road reference while reducing direct exposure to the bright source. It may not remove discomfort completely, and it is not a substitute for slowing down or otherwise driving cautiously when visibility is poor. If you cannot see the road safely, do not press on as though the problem has been solved.

The goal is not to stop noticing the approaching vehicle. Keep enough awareness of its position and the traffic around you to maintain your lane and respond normally; simply avoid holding your gaze on the brightest point. A road edge or lane marking offers a steadier reference than the lamp itself. If a marking is difficult to see, use the visible road edge as your reference rather than turning your eyes away from the roadway.

There is no guarantee that this gaze shift will make every encounter comfortable. The brightness, beam direction, road conditions, your windshield, and your own vision can all affect what you experience. Treat the technique as an immediate way to avoid staring into a source of glare—not as a cure for recurring symptoms or a reason to drive faster than visibility allows.

Why oncoming headlights can feel blinding

Glare is not simply a matter of another driver choosing a bulb that is “too bright.” NHTSA’s technical report discusses headlamp beam distribution, color, size, and condition as factors relevant to glare. Headlamp beams are designed to distribute different intensities in different directions, and light in portions of a beam not regulated in the same way may contribute to glare. A lamp’s condition can also matter: dirty or damaged headlights may provide less useful light to their own driver while affecting what other road users experience.

The condition of your own vehicle can intensify the effect. NHTSA says that soiled or damaged windshields can scatter light and potentially increase glare. Smudges, film, scratches, or other damage can make a light source appear more diffuse or streaked. Reflections from the inside of the windshield or mirrors can add to the distraction.

It is also useful to distinguish discomfort from a proven reduction in visibility. NHTSA’s report describes research finding greater discomfort from “bluer” high-intensity discharge headlights than from “yellower” halogen headlights, but says there was no evidence linking the oncoming headlamp color to visibility reductions. Color alone therefore does not establish that a lamp is defective or unsafe. Nor does the available evidence support a blanket claim that all LED headlights are illegal.

That distinction matters when deciding what to do. A light that feels unpleasant is a real driving concern, but discomfort by itself does not tell you whether a particular lamp violates a standard or whether your ability to see has been reduced. Avoid trying to identify a bulb type or diagnose a vehicle fault from the driver’s seat. Use the practical steps you can control, and arrange an inspection if your own lights appear damaged or misaligned.

Reduce glare before you drive

Clean the windshield and mirrors inside and out

Clean both sides of the windshield, as well as the mirrors. A clean exterior alone may not be enough: film on the inside surface can show up as streaks when headlights hit it at night. AAA and NHTSA include glass cleanliness in their night-driving advice. If a windshield is damaged rather than merely dirty, cleaning will not correct the damage; have the glass assessed as appropriate.

Keep the mirrors clean too, and adjust them for a usable view before setting off. If reflections from the cabin or dashboard are distracting, reduce unnecessary interior brightness where you can do so safely. This is a secondary comfort measure, not a fix for glare caused by a dirty windshield, a vehicle fault, or a vision problem.

A microfiber cloth intended for automotive glass is a simple tool for routine cleaning. Its purpose is to help remove smears; it cannot eliminate glare from an approaching vehicle or correct scratched or damaged glass. If streaks remain, check that you have cleaned both surfaces and that the glass itself is not damaged. Do not assume that a product marketed as an anti-glare treatment will replace clean glass or professional assessment.

Check your own headlights

Before a night drive, make sure the headlights are clean and working. If a lens is cloudy, cracked, or otherwise damaged, the light reaching the road may be affected. A restoration product may be appropriate for some cloudy lenses, but it is not a remedy for glare from another vehicle. Where the lens is damaged or you are unsure whether restoration is suitable, seek an inspection instead of assuming that polishing will solve the problem.

Check both lamps rather than focusing only on the one that looks less bright. A difference in appearance or a damaged lens is a reason to arrange an inspection, not a basis for guessing at the repair. Cleaning or restoring your own lamps addresses their condition; it does not change how an oncoming driver’s lights affect you.

Have headlight aim checked when it may be off

Headlight aim affects where the beam falls. Ask for an aim check during an inspection or have a qualified repairer assess it if the lamps appear misaligned, or if the vehicle has been repaired or loaded in a way that may have changed its stance. Do not guess at an adjustment: the goal is to illuminate the road as intended without directing the beam improperly. A technician can check the vehicle and its lamps rather than relying on a visual impression from the driver’s seat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aim is a different issue from lens cleanliness. Cleaning a lamp will not correct an alignment problem, and polishing a cloudy lens will not establish that the beam is properly aimed. If there is a reason to suspect either condition, have the appropriate check performed instead of treating one maintenance step as a substitute for the other.

Use high beams only when appropriate

High beams can help when conditions and surrounding traffic make their use appropriate. Switch them off for oncoming traffic, as AAA’s night-driving guidance advises. If another driver’s lights seem unusually bright, resist the urge to answer with your own high beams; adding light does not restore your view and can make the situation worse for other road users.

Choose the next step based on what is happening

Situation What to do What this can and cannot address
Brief glare as a vehicle approaches Look toward the lower-right road edge or lane marking rather than the lamp. NHTSA and AAA recommend avoiding a direct look at the headlights. The technique may reduce direct exposure, but it does not guarantee that discomfort will disappear.
Streaks or haze across your view at night Clean the inside and outside of the windshield and the mirrors. NHTSA and AAA identify clean glass as a practical measure. Cleaning cannot correct damaged glass, a vision concern, or misaligned headlights.
Your own headlights are dirty, cloudy, damaged, or appear misaligned Clean the lamps, then arrange inspection, suitable restoration, or an aim adjustment as indicated. NHTSA and AAA discuss lamp condition and maintenance. Work on your own lamps may improve their condition; it does not cure glare from other vehicles.
Glare keeps recurring or your night vision is reduced Arrange an eye-care assessment and prescription review; avoid night driving if you cannot do so safely. NHTSA advises drivers with vision concerns to seek appropriate care. This guidance does not identify the cause of an individual’s symptoms.

These measures address different possible contributors and can be used together. There is no source-supported basis for ranking a universal “best” anti-glare eyewear product. In particular, dark or tinted lenses are not an appropriate night-driving workaround.

A useful way to narrow the next step is to notice where the difficulty occurs. If a brief encounter is uncomfortable but your view is otherwise clear, use the road-edge gaze reference and check your vehicle before the next drive. If streaks or haze remain visible across the glass, clean it and consider whether it is damaged. If your own lamps look cloudy, broken, or poorly aimed, arrange vehicle service. If the problem continues across different vehicles and clean glass, or you have trouble seeing road features, an eye-care assessment is the more relevant next step.

These checks are not an either-or choice. Clean glass and well-maintained, correctly aimed lights are sensible vehicle steps, while an eye exam addresses questions about your vision. A car repair cannot diagnose an eye concern, and an eye exam cannot correct a damaged or misaligned headlight. Taking the step that matches the likely source avoids spending effort on a measure that cannot address the problem.

Why tinted glasses are not the answer at night

NHTSA specifically advises: “Do not wear sunglasses or tinted lenses at night.” Tinted lenses reduce the amount of light reaching your eyes, which can make it harder to see in already-dark conditions. They do not fix a dirty windshield, misaligned headlights, or a vision issue.

If you wear prescription glasses, keep your prescription current and ask an eye-care professional about night-driving symptoms or eyewear. Do not assume a special coating or a darker lens is suitable for you based on an advertisement or someone else’s experience. For marked light sensitivity, NHTSA advises asking an eye doctor whether it can be corrected.

There is no universal eyewear product supported here as the best fix for oncoming glare. In particular, choosing a darker or tinted lens to make headlights seem less intense can also reduce the light you need to see the road. If you have questions about prescription lenses or a possible lens coating, take them to an eye-care professional rather than treating an advertised product as a proven safety solution.

When to get an eye-care assessment

A strong reaction to headlights can have more than one possible explanation, and a driving article cannot diagnose the cause. Arrange an eye-care assessment if the glare is new, severe, persistent, or accompanied by trouble seeing road signs, lane markings, pedestrians, or other vehicles. Difficulty seeing those features is important even if you can still identify the lights themselves.

NHTSA recommends that drivers aged 60 and older see an eye doctor annually to check for age-associated eye conditions. It also advises keeping a current prescription and asking an eye-care professional about extreme light sensitivity. These are general recommendations, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that an examination will make night driving comfortable.

If night driving remains uncomfortable or unsafe, reduce or avoid driving at night when practicable. NHTSA includes avoiding dawn, dusk, and night driving among its advice for older drivers with vision concerns. Arrange other transportation rather than continuing in conditions where you cannot see well enough to drive safely.

Do not wait for an eye appointment if you already know you cannot see road features well enough to drive safely at night. In that case, avoid the trip or arrange another way to travel while you seek advice. The point is to match the driving decision to what you can see, rather than relying on a hoped-for quick fix. Likewise, if the problem is severe or persistent, do not assume that cleaning glass alone has ruled out a vision issue.

How common are complaints about glare?

In a survey reported by AAA on March 24, 2026, six in ten respondents said headlight glare was a problem after dark. AAA said the probability-based panel survey was conducted February 5–8, 2026, among 1,092 U.S. adults, with an overall margin of error of ±4 percentage points at 95% confidence. Among drivers who reported glare, nearly three-quarters said the problem had worsened over the previous decade.

Those results describe respondents’ reports, not the proportion of drivers with a diagnosed vision impairment or the number of crashes caused by glare. AAA’s director of automotive engineering and research, Greg Brannon, described it as “a major source of frustration and concern for millions of drivers.” A widespread complaint does not mean a particular person’s symptoms should be ignored; recurring difficulty seeing still warrants practical checks and, where appropriate, professional advice.

The numbers help explain why the question comes up so often, but they do not determine what is causing glare for an individual driver. A survey response is not a clinical test, a measurement of a particular headlight, or proof that one vehicle-light technology is responsible. For an individual, the practical response remains the same: maintain a road reference during an encounter, keep the vehicle’s glass and lights in suitable condition, and seek professional advice if symptoms persist or affect the ability to see.

What is changing in vehicle-lighting policy?

On October 6, 2026, NHTSA announced work to modernize vehicle-lighting standards and said glare would be examined. That announcement describes a review or rulemaking effort, not a new requirement already in force. It does not change what a driver should do during an encounter: maintain a road reference, avoid staring into the beam, and have their own vehicle checked if its lights or glass may be contributing.

Do yellow or blue headlights cause more dangerous glare?

NHTSA’s technical report describes research finding greater discomfort from bluer high-intensity discharge headlights than from yellower halogen headlights, but says there was no evidence linking oncoming headlamp color to visibility reductions. Color alone does not prove that a lamp is defective or unsafe.

Can yellow or tinted glasses reduce headlight glare at night?

NHTSA says not to wear sunglasses or tinted lenses at night because they reduce the light reaching your eyes. Ask an eye-care professional about prescription eyewear or marked light sensitivity rather than relying on a dark lens as a workaround.

Should I restore my headlights if oncoming lights bother me?

A restoration product may be suitable for some cloudy lenses on your own vehicle, but it will not reduce glare from another car. If a lens is damaged or you are unsure what it needs, arrange an inspection; ask a qualified repairer to check aim if the lights appear misaligned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I see an eye doctor about headlight glare?

Seek an eye-care assessment if glare is new, severe, persistent, or comes with difficulty seeing signs, lane markings, pedestrians, or other vehicles. NHTSA recommends annual eye-doctor visits for drivers aged 60 and older to check for age-associated eye conditions.

Does the AAA survey mean most drivers have a vision problem?

No. AAA reported in March 2026 that six in ten survey respondents said glare was a problem after dark, but this was self-reported survey information, not a measure of diagnosed vision impairment or glare-related crashes.

The Bottom Line

For a brief encounter, look toward the lower-right road edge or lane marking instead of staring into the headlights, while continuing to monitor traffic. Keep your windshield, mirrors, and own lights clean, and have suspect headlight aim checked. Do not use tinted lenses at night. If glare persists or you struggle to see road features, arrange an eye-care assessment and avoid night driving when it is not safe.
