Autonomous yard trucks move trailers by taking a dispatch from yard or fleet-management software, navigating a defined route with onboard sensing and positioning, coupling to a trailer, and controlling the tractor to deliver it. Safety depends on more than the truck: obstacle detection, braking and stop behavior, human override and support, trailer compatibility, and site operating rules all matter. The exact equipment and limits vary by system and distribution center.
How does an autonomous yard truck move a trailer?
A yard move is a coordinated task, not simply a truck driving itself. Software identifies the move and destination; the vehicle locates itself and monitors its surroundings; its control system steers, accelerates, and brakes; and the site’s procedures govern interactions with people, other vehicles, and cargo equipment. The sequence below describes the general pattern vendors document. Not every system uses the same sensors, coupling equipment, or hand-off process.

1. Yard software assigns and routes the move
A terminal operating system or fleet-management system can provide instructions and manage dispatch. Terberg describes the terminal operating system as a source of instructions for its automated vehicle, while its fleet-management layer handles vehicle management. ZF describes its SCALAR orchestration technology as planning, routing, and dispatching yard vehicles. These are examples of system designs, not proof that every distribution center uses the same software arrangement. Terberg’s automation overview and ZF’s SCALAR release describe those roles.

Depending on the system, cameras, radar, laser sensors or lidar, GNSS, and onboard computing can help the truck locate itself and detect people, vehicles, equipment, and obstacles. These are vendor-described examples, not a universal equipment list. The sensor mix and how the system combines sensor information are design-specific. 3. Autonomy software plans motion and commands the truck
The system selects a path and sends movement commands through vehicle controls. Terberg describes drive-by-wire control of the drivetrain, braking, steering, coupling plate, and lift table, with an electronic-driver layer following a programmed path. This illustrates how an automated tractor can control both driving and some trailer-handling functions; it should not be read as a specification for every make of yard truck.
4. The tractor approaches and couples to the trailer
The tractor maneuvers into position and connects to the trailer using equipment compatible with the tractor, trailer, and automation system. Some systems automate docking and coupling. Some can also connect trailer brake and electrical lines with a robotic arm, while other arrangements use auto-coupling equipment with captive trailer fleets. ZF describes an automated trailer move, and Outrider has described a robotic approach to trailer connections. Neither example establishes that all trailers can be handled by all autonomous tractors. ZF’s yard-automation description and Outrider’s July 2025 release provide vendor-specific examples.
5. The truck delivers the trailer and reports status
After coupling, the truck moves the trailer to its assigned location. ZF describes a tractor taking a trailer to a ramp and then returning. Fleet systems can dispatch and monitor vehicles, but the way a truck confirms arrival, hands the trailer off, or coordinates with people and cargo-handling equipment depends on site operations. How do autonomous yard trucks avoid people and obstacles?
Safety is built from interacting layers. Sensors can monitor the operating area, software can identify hazards and respond, and vehicle controls can bring the truck to a safe stop. A site also needs procedures for how automated vehicles share space with workers, other vehicles, trailers, and cargo equipment. The presence of sensors alone does not establish a universal ability to detect every hazard or operate safely in every condition.
Perception and hazard response
Vendor descriptions identify multiple sensors, obstacle monitoring, hazard avoidance, and a safe state when a hazardous situation is detected. For example, Outrider’s system overview describes safety mechanisms, and Embotech’s solution page describes obstacle handling. Those claims describe the respective systems; they are not independent evidence that all autonomous yard trucks respond identically.
Redundancy, monitoring, and emergency intervention
Outrider says its safety system includes redundant hazard detection, fail-safe hardware redundancies, real-time health monitoring, and emergency-stop buttons. It also describes 24/7 remote monitoring and support. These are vendor claims about its system; remote support should not be confused with a claim that a person continuously watches and controls every truck.

In a July 10, 2025 release, Outrider reported 14 safety mechanisms addressing more than 200,000 yard-operation hazards. Those are company-reported design figures: they do not represent an independently measured accident reduction, crash rate, or safety rating. The release explains the company’s figures and safety approach.
Awareness of the trailer as well as the tractor
A trailer changes the vehicle’s size and can affect what is visible around it. In a safety concept dated July 30, 2026, ZF describes combining sensors across the truck and trailer to improve object detection, blind-spot awareness, and protection of vulnerable road users in low-speed yard operations. This is a described concept, not evidence that every truck-and-trailer combination already has those capabilities. ZF’s safety-concept page sets out the proposal.
What does field validation show—and what does it not show?
Site trials can examine whether a system follows routes, positions itself accurately, stops where expected, and coordinates with equipment. In a 2023 demonstration, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) examined route deviation, GNSS and sensor positioning, stopping accuracy, and coordination with cargo-handling equipment. The ministry reported no major safety problem with basic operation in a simulated field, but also identified further work needed on speed, stopping accuracy, operating methods, and rules before implementation. That is evidence from a particular demonstration, not proof of universal safe operation or certification for every site. MLIT’s May 26, 2023 report describes the demonstration and its remaining issues.

For a distribution center, the practical implication is to evaluate the actual site and operating conditions rather than assuming that a successful demonstration transfers unchanged. A route, traffic mix, trailer fleet, positioning environment, and interaction with cargo equipment can all differ. The relevant question is whether the proposed system has been assessed for the specific moves and conditions it will encounter, and what it does when it cannot continue safely.

Published vendor material documents different capabilities, but it does not provide an independent head-to-head comparison or a common performance test. Use a feature checklist to frame procurement and site validation, not to infer a winner from marketing descriptions.

- Operating environment: Establish whether the system is intended for a defined or gated yard, mixed traffic, or another operating context. Embotech describes a solution intended for mixed traffic and obstacle handling; Terberg describes sensor-based navigation and collision avoidance. Confirm the specific conditions covered by any capability claim.
- Sensing and redundancy: Ask which sensors are used, how positioning is maintained, what happens if a sensor or system component becomes unavailable, and what redundancy is provided. Do not assume that two systems using some of the same sensor types have equivalent detection performance.
- Hazard response and safe stops: Determine what the system treats as a hazard, how it responds, and how stopping behavior is evaluated on the site’s routes. The MLIT demonstration specifically examined route deviation, positioning, and stopping accuracy, underscoring the need to validate these behaviors in context.
- Emergency override and support: Identify the locations and use of emergency-stop controls, how a stopped vehicle is handled, and what remote support covers. Ask which decisions require a person and which are automated; do not infer continuous human supervision from the existence of a support service.
- Trailer and coupling compatibility: Confirm the trailer types and coupling equipment the system can handle, including whether trailer brake and electrical connections are automated. A feature documented for one fleet or setup is not a guarantee of compatibility with another.
- Dispatch and site coordination: Map how moves enter the system, how vehicles are routed and monitored, and how the workflow coordinates with cargo-handling equipment and people. A dispatch integration does not by itself settle on-site traffic rules or hand-offs.
- Evidence and operating rules: Request the validation evidence relevant to the planned routes and conditions, along with the procedures for exceptions, stops, and changes in operating conditions. Distinguish field demonstrations and vendor claims from independent, comparable safety evidence.

What limits should operators keep in mind?
Autonomous yard trucks are described for defined, gated, or otherwise controlled logistics yards, although some vendors also describe mixed-traffic use. The level of control in a yard does not make every operating environment identical. Routes, positioning conditions, people and vehicle movement, trailer equipment, and site rules need to be considered together.
Weather tolerance, operating speed, stopping precision, coupling compatibility, and operation without a safety driver are system-specific claims that need current verification. The available sources do not establish one set of limits for all systems. They also do not establish a general, independently sourced accident-reduction rate or productivity outcome. A vendor’s stated capability or safety design should not be presented as a measured industry-wide result.
