Plan an EV road trip around your specific car, not its advertised maximum range: map charging legs with an EV-aware planner, verify each stop’s plugs and access, leave a battery buffer, and identify an alternate charger before you go. Recheck station information close to departure because listings and live availability can change.
What to gather before planning
Start with the details that determine whether a route and its chargers will work for your car. Have these ready:
- Your exact EV model and trim, if the planner requests it.
- The vehicle’s range profile, charging capability and connector type.
- Any adapter you actually own and are permitted to use.
- Your departure state of charge and the battery reserve you want at your destination.
- Your origin, destination and planned stops that are not for charging.
Vehicle-integrated navigation can help estimate battery energy at arrival, but features vary by market and configuration. Tesla’s Model 3 manual says Trip Planner may add Supercharger stops when the feature is enabled and available in the region. It can display and let drivers manually add third-party stations, but does not automatically route to those stations. Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual.
How to map charging stops
1. Build a route with an EV-aware planner
Choose a planner that supports your vehicle or allows you to enter its relevant details. ChargePoint says its route planning uses EV range, current state of charge and target end-of-trip state of charge; selected users can edit vehicle and stop settings in advanced mode. Use the planner’s route as a starting point, then inspect the proposed charging legs. A leg that matches the car’s ideal range leaves little room for a detour or an unexpected change in conditions. Long distances, varied terrain, extreme temperatures and higher speeds can reduce range, according to Australian government guidance. Australian Government: EV road trips. Allow a buffer rather than treating rated range as a guaranteed distance between chargers.
2. Check that each station is usable for your trip
For every candidate stop, confirm the connector, charging power, access requirements, any restricted hours, current availability and the size of the detour. Make sure the network is usable with your vehicle and that you understand any payment or access steps before arriving.
Do not treat a map listing or a live-status indicator as a guarantee. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says it imports data daily from networks with APIs, imports CSV data periodically from other providers, and manually verifies identified non-networked stations every other year. 3. Add a realistic fallback
Identify another compatible charging option along or near the route in case your preferred station is occupied, unavailable or inaccessible. This matters especially during peak travel periods: Australian government guidance notes that long weekends and school holidays can affect charger availability and recommends having alternate options. The timing and impact of peak periods vary by location.
How many stops to plan, and how much battery to keep
There is no reliable stop count based on distance alone. It depends on your car and trim, starting charge, desired arrival reserve, the chargers on the route, and the conditions you expect. Enter the trip and vehicle details in a planner, then judge its proposed legs against your actual range margin and the consequences of reaching a station with less charge than expected.
Set a reserve that leaves room for a detour, traffic or a charging problem. Don’t plan to arrive at every charger close to empty simply because the route planner says the leg is within the car’s rated range. If conditions worsen or the estimated arrival charge drops, choose a nearer compatible station rather than pressing on to the original stop.

How to plan charging time and breaks
Charging duration depends on the vehicle, charger, battery temperature, starting state of charge and charging target. Use the current estimate from your vehicle or route planner rather than assigning every stop the same number of minutes.
Tesla says its Model 3 Trip Planner shows recommended Supercharger charging times and estimates energy at arrival. Tesla also claims that “Superchargers can add up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.” That is a manufacturer claim, conditional on the vehicle, charger and trip conditions—not a general estimate for EVs or a promise for every stop. It also advises a rest break every two hours; this is market-specific guidance, not a universal legal requirement. The guidance suggests 80% as a rule of thumb for intermediate charging because charging speed may decline above that level, while recommending a full charge before leaving home where possible. How to compare routes and planning tools
Compare complete journeys rather than looking only at distance or the number of stops. A shorter route may take longer overall if it has slower charging, awkward detours or less useful stops. Check:
- Whether the planner supports your vehicle and trim, and whether its connector and adapter assumptions match what you have.
- Whether you can set starting and arrival state of charge.
- Which charging networks and stations it covers, and whether it filters for compatible plugs.
- Whether it shows charging power, estimated stop times and the assumptions behind those estimates.
- Total travel time including charging, detours and breaks—not just driving time.
- Whether you can add non-charging stops and select alternate stations.
- Whether it works in your country and with your vehicle, phone or in-car system.

PlugShare documents its trip planner, ChargePoint documents route planning in its app, and Tesla documents its vehicle-integrated planner. Close to departure, review the route and confirm that planned stations still appear usable, compatible and accessible. During the drive, update the plan if traffic, weather, energy use or charger status changes. Use vehicle navigation or the charging provider’s current information where available.

Tesla’s Model 3 manual says navigation may alert and reroute when a Supercharger on the route has an outage. That behavior is specific to supported Tesla configurations and regions, so do not assume every car or planner will automatically find a replacement. Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual.
Prepare for problems beyond charging
Roadside preparation is separate from route planning, but it can help if a journey is interrupted by a tire problem. Australian government guidance includes a tire repair kit with an air compressor and pressure gauge in an EV travel kit. Check your vehicle manual, tire type and local roadside-assistance requirements before carrying or using repair equipment; a kit cannot fix every puncture. The same Australian guidance mentions a charging cable for untethered Type 2 chargers. Cable and connector needs vary by country and vehicle, so check what your route and car actually require.
